Both solve iron, manganese, and sulfur problems, but they use different technology. Our backwashing iron filters use a large media bed with an air-injection control valve that regenerates the media by backwashing every few days. They handle higher contaminant levels (iron up to 15+ ppm) and have very long media life. This Pioneer system uses a sealed ATOMUS MD1 cartridge that oxidizes and adsorbs contaminants without any control valve, backwash cycle, drain line, or electricity. It is simpler to install and live with, but it has lower contaminant limits (3 ppm iron, 2 ppm manganese) and the cartridge is replaced rather than regenerated. Cartridge life depends on your iron, manganese, and sulfur levels and how much water your household uses daily. Higher contaminant levels exhaust the media faster. There is no single gallon rating because the ATOMUS MD1 cartridge handles multiple contaminants simultaneously and each water chemistry is different. The Metered Tank upgrade tracks gallons used, which helps you gauge when replacement is needed. The Standard (Bypass Tank) configuration is fully passive and includes the bypass manifold and drain valve. The Metered Tank upgrade adds an LED metered umbrella cap that counts the gallons you have used. Because cartridge life depends on your specific water chemistry, the meter gives you a measurable baseline instead of guessing when to swap the cartridge. We recommend the meter for most homes, along with periodic testing of your treated water for iron and sulfur.

No. The ATOMUS MD1 is a solid-state oxidizer. It oxidizes and adsorbs contaminants without introducing chlorine, ozone, potassium permanganate, or any other chemical into your water stream. It creates no disinfectant byproducts. This is a key difference from systems that use chemical injection or chemical-regeneration valves.

If your water hardness is above 140 ppm (about 8 grains per gallon), yes. The ATOMUS MD1 media requires hardness below that limit. Install a water softener upstream of the Pioneer. If your hardness is already below 140 ppm, no softener is needed for this system to work properly. Your water test will show your hardness level.

Yes. The Pioneer uses standard 1" MNPT threaded connections with no gluing, and the bypass manifold comes ready to connect. You cut into your main line and plumb it in.
