No drain line. No electricity. No backwashing. Standard 1" NPT plumbing. The Pioneer installs inline on your main water line. The base configuration is fully passive. Only the optional Metered Tank upgrade uses 3 AAA batteries for its LED usage meter.
Check your water hardness first. The ATOMUS MD1 media requires hardness below 140 ppm (8 gpg). If your water is harder than that, install a water softener upstream of this system. Water above pH 9.5 or below pH 5.5 should also be addressed first.
Installation Steps
Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
Cut into the main water line after any sediment pre-filter and softener (if applicable), and install the 1" MNPT connections (standard threaded fittings, no gluing)
Attach the bypass manifold using the included 1" MNPT elbow or straight connectors
Connect the 3/8" PEX drain valve kit so you can drain the tank for cartridge change-outs
If you chose the Metered Tank, install 3 AAA batteries in the LED umbrella cap and set the meter to the cartridge capacity
Open the bypass slowly, switch to service, and flush the new cartridge to drain for approximately 30-60 minutes before use

One cartridge, no backwashing, no salt, no chemicals, no drain. The ATOMUS MD1 media is a solid-state oxidizer, so there is no regeneration cycle and no chemical additives. You simply replace the cartridge when it reaches its capacity.
Maintenance Schedule
At Rated CapacityReplace the ATOMUS MD1 cartridge. Cartridge life depends on your iron, manganese, and sulfur levels and daily water usage. Higher contaminant levels shorten cartridge life. The Metered Tank upgrade tracks gallons used so you know when it is time.
Every 3-6 MonthsReplace any sediment pre-filter cartridge (if using one upstream) to keep particulates off the ATOMUS MD1 media.
AnnualTest your treated water for iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide to confirm the system is still performing. Replace the 3 AAA meter batteries (Metered Tank only).
Cartridge Replacement
The Pioneer uses a snap-ring top cap, so no tools are required. Press the red pressure-relief button, drain the tank through the PEX drain valve, pull the snap ring, lift off the cap, and swap the cartridge. The replacement is the ATOMUS MD1 (CT-5020-0640RD-MD1). The spent media holds contaminants in a non-leachable bond that passes the USEPA TCLP and California WET tests, making it landfillable where local regulations allow. Contact us for replacement cartridge pricing and availability.
Not sure when to replace? Call or text 800-460-5810. We can help you estimate cartridge life from your water test results and household usage. If you start noticing staining, odor, or discoloration returning, the cartridge is likely nearing the end of its service life.
"Our well had iron around 2 ppm and a sulfur smell you could notice every time you turned on the hot water. Aidan recommended this cartridge system because we did not want to deal with a drain line or backwash valve. The smell was gone and no more orange staining in the toilets. Simple install." ★★★★★

"We wanted something that did not use chemicals and did not need a control valve or electricity. The Pioneer fit perfectly. Iron and sulfur are both under control now, and the cartridge change is as easy as they say. Snap ring off, swap, done." ★★★★★
Verified Buyer, Pennsylvania
"What sold me was the call with Aidan before I bought. He looked at my water test, confirmed the iron was low enough for this system, and told me exactly where to plumb it relative to my softener. Honest advice, not just trying to sell me the most expensive option." ★★★★★

Iron Filters for Well Water: The Complete Guide
Best Iron Filter for Well Water (What Actually Works)
Why Choose the Pioneer for Iron, Manganese & Sulfur Removal?
A Simpler Approach to Three Common Well Water Problems
Iron stains in your toilets and sinks, manganese discoloration in your laundry, and the rotten egg smell of hydrogen sulfide are three of the most common well water problems. They are often found together in the same water, and most solutions require a backwashing control valve with a drain line and electricity, or chemical injection with ongoing chemical costs.
The Pioneer Iron, Manganese & Sulfur Removal System takes a different approach. It uses ATOMUS MD1, a patented solid-state oxidation and adsorption media that simultaneously oxidizes and captures ferrous iron (up to 3 ppm), manganese (up to 2 ppm), hydrogen sulfide (up to 10 ppm), tannins, and color, all without adding chemicals, producing disinfectant byproducts, or requiring backwash cycles. The media is certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and passes the USEPA TCLP and California WET tests.
Built around the Enpress PIONEER 8 by 40 cartridge tank, the system is 100% non-metallic and treats your entire home at the point of entry with up to 15 GPM peak service flow. The cartridge swaps with a snap ring and no tools. If your iron, manganese, or sulfur levels are higher than the cartridge capacity, our backwashing iron filters are the right choice. Send us your water test and we will tell you which system fits.

Frequently Asked Questions
The ATOMUS MD1 cartridge is designed for ferrous (clear-water) iron up to 3 ppm, manganese up to 2 ppm, and hydrogen sulfide up to 10 ppm. It also handles tannins and color up to 50 color units. These are firm limits. If your water test shows iron above 3 ppm or manganese above 2 ppm, a backwashing air-injection iron filter is a better fit. Call or text Aidan at 800-460-5810 and send your water test so we can confirm which system matches your water.
Both solve iron, manganese, and sulfur problems, but they use different technology. Our backwashing iron filters use a large media bed with an air-injection control valve that regenerates the media by backwashing every few days. They handle higher contaminant levels (iron up to 15+ ppm) and have very long media life. This Pioneer system uses a sealed ATOMUS MD1 cartridge that oxidizes and adsorbs contaminants without any control valve, backwash cycle, drain line, or electricity. It is simpler to install and live with, but it has lower contaminant limits (3 ppm iron, 2 ppm manganese) and the cartridge is replaced rather than regenerated. If you are not sure which is right, send us your water test.
Cartridge life depends on your iron, manganese, and sulfur levels and how much water your household uses daily. Higher contaminant levels exhaust the media faster. There is no single gallon rating because the ATOMUS MD1 cartridge handles multiple contaminants simultaneously and each water chemistry is different. The Metered Tank upgrade tracks gallons used, which helps you gauge when replacement is needed. You will also notice staining, odor, or discoloration returning as the cartridge approaches the end of its life. Contact us with your water test results and we can give you a rough estimate for your specific water.
The Standard (Bypass Tank) configuration is fully passive and includes the bypass manifold and drain valve. The Metered Tank upgrade adds an LED metered umbrella cap that counts the gallons you have used. Because cartridge life depends on your specific water chemistry, the meter gives you a measurable baseline instead of guessing when to swap the cartridge. We recommend the meter for most homes, along with periodic testing of your treated water for iron and sulfur.
No. The ATOMUS MD1 is a solid-state oxidizer. It oxidizes and adsorbs contaminants without introducing chlorine, ozone, potassium permanganate, or any other chemical into your water stream. It creates no disinfectant byproducts. This is a key difference from systems that use chemical injection or chemical-regeneration valves.
If your water hardness is above 140 ppm (about 8 grains per gallon), yes. The ATOMUS MD1 media requires hardness below that limit. Install a water softener upstream of the Pioneer. If your hardness is already below 140 ppm, no softener is needed for this system to work properly. Your water test will show your hardness level.
Yes. The Pioneer uses standard 1" MNPT threaded connections with no gluing, and the bypass manifold comes ready to connect. You cut into your main line and plumb it in. The base configuration needs no drain and no power. Plan a flush of about 30-60 minutes before use. Call or text Aidan at 800-460-5810 if you want to be walked through it.
Yes. The ATOMUS MD1 media holds captured contaminants in a stable, non-leachable bond. It has been evaluated against the USEPA TCLP and California WET tests, so it does not release captured iron, manganese, sulfur, or heavy metals in landfill conditions. The cartridge is landfillable when disposed of in accordance with your local, state, and federal regulations.

Why the Pioneer Costs More Than Basic Iron/Sulfur Solutions
Certified Cartridge Filtration vs Chemical Injection and Budget Filters
What You Get With Budget Iron/Sulfur Filters
Budget iron and sulfur solutions often rely on cheap carbon cartridges that saturate quickly, or sediment-style filters that only catch particulate iron and miss dissolved (ferrous) iron entirely. Many have no certification at all. Chemical injection systems add chlorine or potassium permanganate to your water, which creates disinfectant byproducts and requires regular chemical refills. Basic aeration units can be noisy and still need a separate filter stage downstream.
Point-of-use filters (under-sink or faucet-mount) only treat one tap and have tiny capacities that cannot keep up with whole-house demand. Meanwhile, your showers, toilets, water heater, and laundry continue to be affected by iron staining and sulfur odor.

Whole house, no chemicals, certified media
A backwashing iron filter handles higher contaminant levels and has longer media life, but it requires a drain line, electricity, and a control valve. The Pioneer trades that for simplicity: no drain, no power, no backwash, and a cartridge swap instead of media handling. If your iron is under 3 ppm and sulfur is under 10 ppm, it is the simpler path to clean water for your entire home.
What You Get With the Pioneer
The Pioneer uses ATOMUS MD1, a patented solid-state oxidation and adsorption media that treats iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, tannins, and color simultaneously without adding any chemicals to your water and without creating disinfectant byproducts. There is no control valve, no backwash cycle, no drain line, and no electricity needed.
The media is certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and passes the USEPA TCLP and California WET tests for safe disposal. The 8 by 40 cartridge tank is 100% non-metallic, and the cartridge swaps with a snap ring and no tools. 29+Success Rate
Iron stains, manganese discoloration, and rotten egg sulfur smell are three of the most common well water complaints we hear. We have spent 29+ years helping homeowners solve these problems, and we chose the Pioneer OX because it addresses all three contaminants in a single cartridge with no chemicals, no backwashing, and no drain line. We back it with a real guarantee because we believe in the system and we will not sell it to you if your water does not fit.
The Industry "Return Policy" Trap
+
Most online water treatment retailers offer a return policy that requires you to ship the entire system back at your expense. After paying for return freight, you often find a 15-25% restocking fee on top of it. It is designed to make returns impractical. For something as visible and frustrating as iron staining and sulfur smell, you should not have to gamble on whether a filter actually works.
How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
It Doesn't Fix the Iron, Manganese, or Sulfur
If post-install testing or visible results show the problem is not resolved, that's on us.
2
You Call Us, We Fix It
We troubleshoot with you: water test results, contaminant levels, hardness, pH, placement in the treatment train. Most issues come down to contaminant levels exceeding the cartridge capacity or a water chemistry mismatch we can identify and solve.
Full Refund, No Hassle
If we cannot resolve the issue, you get a full refund. We handle the logistics. You do not ship anything back. That is the difference between a real guarantee and a return policy.
Iron and sulfur are two of the most common calls I get. The first thing I do is look at your water test to see the iron level, the form of iron (ferrous vs. ferric), the sulfur level, your hardness, and your pH. If your iron is under 3 ppm and sulfur is under 10 ppm, the Pioneer is a great, simple option. If your levels are higher, I will tell you that honestly and steer you to our backwashing iron filter instead. Send me your test and I will give you a straight answer.
