Most whole-house competitors run activated carbon, which a Duke and NC State study found averages about 73% PFAS removal and fades as the carbon loads. PFAS-selective ion exchange takes the whole house to non-detect, and a certified carbon block (our budget cartridge) is held to a tested 99.82% across five compounds rather than a marketing claim. ppt (parts per trillion) and the EPA limit

PFAS is measured in parts per trillion (ppt, the same as nanograms per liter). The EPA's 2024 drinking water standard sets the limit at 4 ppt for PFOA and for PFOS. Your EPA 537.1 lab report gives you a ppt number for 14 analytes; that number is what sizes the system. Typical contaminated supplies run 10 to 300 ppt. Levels of 300+ ppt (common near firefighting foam sites) exhaust ordinary media quickly, which is when the Pioneer's 25x adsorption capacity earns its price.

Ion exchange vs reverse osmosis vs carbon

Three technologies remove PFAS, and they are not interchangeable. PFAS-selective ion exchange (ResinTech SIR-110-HP) takes the whole house to non-detect including PFOA and PFOS. Reverse osmosis removes 94 to 99%+ per EPA data, but RO only serves one tap and our under-sink RO carries no PFAS certification. Granular activated carbon averages about 73% in the Duke and NC State field study, which is why we only sell carbon for PFAS as a certified carbon BLOCK (the FloPlus, tested to 99.82% on five compounds), never loose GAC.

Media capacity and replacement

PFAS media is single-use: once the resin or adsorption cartridge is loaded it cannot be regenerated for PFAS duty, only replaced. Capacity depends on your level: the Pioneer cartridge runs 100,000+ gallons at 3,000+ ppt and 350,000+ gallons at a typical 100 ppt, roughly 12 to 36 months in a real home. The FloPlus cartridge is about 40,000 gallons or 12 months. Ion exchange resin life depends on the PFAS level and water chemistry (TOC and sulfate compete for sites), which is another reason the lab test comes first.

How PFAS removal works

PFAS molecules carry a charged head and a fluorinated tail, and every removal technology exploits one of those. PFAS-selective ion exchange resin grabs the charged head and holds it permanently on the bead, which is why spent resin is replaced, never regenerated. Adsorption media (the Pioneer's ATOMUS PF8) binds the tail across 25x the capacity of standard carbon. A reverse osmosis membrane simply rejects the whole molecule at the membrane wall, sending it down the drain. No PFAS tank system backwashes: water passes through, PFAS stays behind, and the media is swapped before breakthrough.

Unlike a softener, PFAS media cannot be regenerated: once loaded it is swapped out. Nothing backwashes, so the tank systems need no drain or electricity. The Pioneer cartridge changes with a no-tool snap ring and spent cartridges go back to the manufacturer for PFAS extraction and media reuse.

What to have ready

What your plumber will do

  1. Position the tank after the sediment pre-filter (and any iron filter or softener on a well), then level it on the base.
  2. Thread on the in/out head. No drain line and no electrical connection: nothing on a PFAS tank backwashes.
  3. Attach the bypass valve so the system can be isolated for future media changes.
  4. Plumb 1" inlet (IN) and outlet (OUT). CPVC with solvent cement or PEX with SharkBite fittings both work.
  5. Open the water valve slowly, 1/4 turn at a time. A sudden rush can channel the media bed and cut contact time, and contact time is what takes PFAS to non-detect.
  6. Flush per the manual before first use (the Pioneer cartridge flushes about 10 minutes) until the water runs clear.
  7. For the under-sink RO: mount the filter module in the cabinet, tee the 3/8" cold line, set the tank, mount the dedicated faucet, and run the drain line to the trap.

Standard pitcher filters are not certified for PFAS. A basic carbon pitcher cartridge is designed for chlorine taste and odor, with far too little media and contact time for a reliable PFAS claim. Some newer pitcher and faucet products advertise PFOA/PFOS reduction; before trusting any of them, check for an NSF/ANSI 53 certification that names PFOA and PFOS explicitly. For a dependable result, use certified RO at the tap or a whole-house ion exchange or adsorption system.

It depends on your level and your concern. Drinking and cooking water is the main exposure route, so an under-sink RO (94 to 99%+ PFAS per EPA data) or the certified FloPlus cartridge covers the highest-impact use on a budget. A whole-house system protects every tap, shower, and appliance and is the right call when your test shows meaningful levels, when you have young kids filling cups at bathroom sinks, or when you simply want the problem gone everywhere.

It scales with your PFAS level and your water chemistry. The Pioneer cartridge runs 100,000+ gallons at very high levels (3,000+ ppt) and 350,000+ gallons at a typical 100 ppt, which works out to roughly 12 to 36 months in a real home. No. Boiling concentrates PFAS rather than removing it: water evaporates, the PFAS stays. Letting water sit, freezing it, or using a standard fridge filter does not remove it either.

Drinking and cooking are the primary exposure routes. Current research indicates skin absorbs very little PFAS during normal bathing, so health agencies focus their limits on ingestion. If your levels are modest and budget is tight, protecting the drinking water with an under-sink RO or the certified FloPlus cartridge addresses most of the real exposure.

That said, homes with high confirmed levels usually choose whole-house treatment anyway: it covers toothbrushing, kids drinking from bathroom taps, humidifiers, and pets, and removes the question entirely.
