Not sure if this budget PFAS filter is enough for your water? It depends on three things: which PFAS compounds your lab test shows, how many bathrooms you have, and whether you are on city or well water. This filter is certified for 5 PFAS compounds at 5 GPM - a real fit for 1-2 bath city homes, and honestly not the right pick for bigger homes or wider contamination. Send Aidan your PFAS test results and he will tell you straight whether to buy this, the ion exchange system, or the Pioneer.

Complete Pentair FloPlus Protect 20BB Kit

  • 20" Big Blue filter housing with integrated pressure relief valve and 1" FPT inlet/outlet connections
  • Pentair Fibredyne carbon block PFAS cartridge - 1 micron, IAPMO R&T certified against NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFHpA reduction
  • Housing wrench for cartridge changes
  • Mounting bracket and screws for wall installation
  • Installation and operation manual
  • Free shipping to all lower 48 states
Be honest with yourself about flow rate: this system is rated at 5 GPM service flow. That is genuinely fine for a 1-2 bathroom home, but a 3+ bathroom house running multiple showers will notice the restriction. Larger homes should look at our 8 GPM ion exchange PFAS system or the Pioneer cartridge system instead.
Test first: PFAS have no taste, color, or smell. Before buying any PFAS filter, confirm what is actually in your water with a PFAS water test kit (EPA 537.1 certified lab analysis). Treatment should be chosen from a lab result, not guesswork.

PFHxS (Perfluorohexane sulfonate)
PFNA (Perfluorononanoic acid)
PFHpA (Perfluoroheptanoic acid)
The honest comparison: this carbon block is certified for the 5 PFAS compounds above. Our ion exchange PFAS system and the Pioneer system reach non-detect levels across a wider range of PFAS species, including short-chain compounds like PFBS and GenX. If your lab test shows compounds beyond these 5, or very high total PFAS, step up to one of those systems.
No drain line. No electricity. No backwashing. Standard 1" FPT plumbing. The FloPlus Protect installs inline on your main water line with the included mounting bracket. It is a fully passive cartridge filter - the simplest whole-house PFAS installation there is.
Check your feed pressure. The housing is rated for 30-90 psi feed water and 40-100 F. If your home's pressure runs above 90 psi, install a pressure reducing valve upstream. On well water, sediment, iron, or manganese will foul the carbon block early - those need their own treatment first, and a well with confirmed PFAS is usually better served by our well water PFAS system.

Installation Steps

  1. Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
  2. Choose a wall location on the main line after the meter (city water) with room below the housing to swing the wrench for cartridge changes
  3. Mount the bracket to the wall with the included screws and hang the housing
  4. Cut into the main line and connect the 1" FPT inlet and outlet (adapters available for 3/4" plumbing)
  5. Insert the Fibredyne carbon block cartridge, lubricate the O-ring, and tighten the sump with the included wrench
  6. Open the supply slowly, press the pressure relief button to purge air, check for leaks, and flush the cartridge per the manual before use

One cartridge a year for most 1-2 bath homes. No backwashing, no media changeouts, no electronics. Maintenance is a single cartridge swap with the included wrench - shut off the water, press the pressure relief button, unscrew the sump, replace the cartridge, done.

Maintenance Schedule

  • 40,000 gal / 12 months Replace the Fibredyne carbon block cartridge at 40,000 gallons or 12 months, whichever comes first. A higher-use household can reach the gallon limit before the calendar does - if your home uses 150+ gallons per day, plan on changing it sooner than a year.
  • At each change Inspect and lubricate the housing O-ring with food-grade silicone grease, and check the housing for cracks or wear.
  • Annual Test your treated water for PFAS to confirm performance. PFAS breakthrough has no taste, color, or smell - a PFAS lab test is the only way to verify the cartridge is still doing its job.

Cartridge Replacement

The 20" Big Blue housing is an industry-standard format, and the replacement is the Pentair Fibredyne FloPlus Protect carbon block cartridge. The integrated pressure relief valve makes changes clean: relieve pressure first, then unscrew the sump with the included wrench. Contact us for replacement cartridge pricing and availability.

Do not run the cartridge past its rated capacity. Unlike a sediment filter, a spent PFAS cartridge gives no visible warning - water keeps flowing normally while PFAS passes through. Put the replacement date on your calendar at install time.
Questions about replacement timing? Call or text 800-460-5810. We can estimate cartridge life from your household size and water usage.

Why Choose the FloPlus Protect as Your Whole House PFAS Cartridge Filter?

Certified Carbon Block PFAS Reduction for Smaller Homes, Without the Tank-System Price

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals that do not break down in the environment or the human body. They are most often found in city water supplies, and because they have no color, taste, or smell, a lab test is the only way to know they are present. The EPA has set enforceable maximum contaminant levels of 4 ppt for PFOA and PFOS. The Pentair FloPlus Protect 20BB is a whole house PFAS cartridge filter built around a 20 inch Big Blue housing and a Fibredyne 1 micron carbon block. Unlike loose granular activated carbon, which a Duke University study found averages only about 73% PFAS removal, this engineered carbon block is IAPMO R&T certified against NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFHpA reduction at up to 99.82%. One cartridge covers 40,000 gallons or about 12 months. At 5 GPM service flow, it is sized for 1-2 bathroom homes on city water - the budget entry point for certified whole-house PFAS protection. Homes with 3+ bathrooms, well water, or PFAS species beyond the 5 certified compounds should step up to our ion exchange PFAS Removal System or the Pioneer cartridge system, which reach non-detect levels across a wider range of PFAS chemicals.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends entirely on the carbon. A Duke University and NC State study found that loose granular activated carbon (GAC) filters averaged only about 73% PFAS removal, with wide variation. The FloPlus Protect is different: it uses an engineered Fibredyne carbon block, and it is independently certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFHpA reduction at up to 99.82%. That certification is the difference between a carbon filter that is marketed for PFAS and one that is proven for PFAS. Always look for an NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certification with explicit PFAS claims before buying any PFAS filter.

Five compounds: PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFHpA, certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 53 at up to 99.82% reduction. To be plain about the limits: that is 5 specific PFAS compounds, not the entire PFAS family. Our ion exchange PFAS Removal System and the Pioneer cartridge system reach non-detect levels across a wider range of PFAS species, including short-chain compounds like PFBS and GenX. If your lab test shows compounds beyond these 5, or very high total PFAS, one of those systems is the better choice. Send us your test results and we will tell you honestly which one fits.

For a 1-2 bathroom home, yes - 5 GPM covers a shower and a faucet or appliance running at the same time without a noticeable pressure drop. For a 3+ bathroom home or a household that regularly runs multiple showers at once, it is not enough, and we would rather tell you that now than have you discover it in the morning rush. Larger homes should use our 8 GPM ion exchange PFAS system or the Pioneer system instead. This filter exists to make certified whole-house PFAS protection affordable for smaller homes, not to be the right answer for every home.

The Fibredyne carbon block is rated for 40,000 gallons or approximately 12 months, whichever comes first. A 1-2 bath household using around 100 gallons per day will get close to the full 12 months. A heavier-use household can reach 40,000 gallons sooner, so plan replacement by gallons, not just the calendar. Because PFAS breakthrough is invisible (no taste, color, or smell), mark the replacement date when you install the cartridge and consider an annual PFAS test on the treated water to verify performance.

It can, but with caveats. The carbon block is a 1 micron filter, so sediment, iron, or manganese in well water will clog and foul it well before its rated PFAS capacity. Those need their own treatment upstream. More importantly, wells near PFAS sources (airports, military bases, landfills) often carry higher and more varied PFAS levels, where our well water PFAS system (sediment pre-filter + ion exchange + UV) is the better engineered answer. This FloPlus is at its best on city water in a smaller home. Either way, start with a PFAS lab test so the treatment matches what is actually in your water.

Price, technology, and reach. This FloPlus Protect 20BB at $349 is a certified carbon block in a 20 inch Big Blue housing: it reduces 5 PFAS compounds up to 99.82% at 5 GPM, which fits 1-2 bath city-water homes. The PFAS Removal System at $1,695 uses PFAS-selective ion exchange resin, flows 8 GPM, and takes PFAS to non-detect across a wider range of species. The Pioneer system uses a PFAS-selective adsorption cartridge with very large capacity for high contamination levels. None of these is universally best - the right pick depends on your lab results, home size, and budget. That is exactly what a 5 minute call with Aidan sorts out.

Yes, if you are comfortable with basic plumbing. The kit includes the mounting bracket, screws, housing wrench, and manual. You mount the housing on the wall near where the main line enters the house, cut in, and connect the 1" FPT inlet and outlet. No drain, no electrical work, no programming. Most DIY installs take an afternoon. If you would rather not cut into your main line, any local plumber can install it in about an hour. Call or text 800-460-5810 if you want to be walked through it.

You cannot see, taste, or smell PFAS - testing is the only way. If you are on city water, start with your utility's annual water quality report, and check EPA's PFAS Analytics Tools for monitoring data in your area. For a definitive answer at your own tap, use an EPA 537.1 certified lab test like our PFAS Water Test Kit, which screens 14 PFAS analytes including PFOA and PFOS. We always recommend testing before buying treatment: it tells you whether you need a PFAS filter at all, and if you do, which technology actually matches your contamination.

Whole House PFAS Cartridge Filter - Pentair FloPlus Protect 20BB
Whole House PFAS Cartr... $349.00

Why a Certified Carbon Block Beats Cheap PFAS Filters

Certified Whole-House Protection vs Pitchers and Loose GAC

What You Get With Budget PFAS Filters

Most PFAS filters under $100 are pitcher filters or single-faucet cartridges. Even when they work, they protect one tap and hold 40-100 gallons per cartridge, so the per-gallon cost climbs fast. Many carry no third-party PFAS certification at all - the claim is marketing, not a tested result.

Cheap whole-house carbon filters have a different problem: loose granular activated carbon (GAC). A Duke University and NC State study found GAC filters averaged only about 73% PFAS removal. Loose carbon allows channeling, where water carves paths through the media and bypasses most of it.

Whole house, certified to 99.82%, 40,000 gal cartridge

At 40,000 gallons per cartridge, this works out to well under a penny per gallon of certified whole-house PFAS protection. A pitcher filter at 40-100 gallons per cartridge costs many times more per gallon and only treats what you pour into it. The honest caveat: if your home has 3+ bathrooms or your lab test shows PFAS compounds beyond the 5 this block is certified for, the right answer is our ion exchange system at $1,695, and we will tell you that before you buy.

What You Get With the FloPlus Protect

The FloPlus Protect 20BB uses a Pentair Fibredyne engineered carbon block, not loose GAC. Water is forced through the full 1 micron block with no channeling, and the result is independently certified: IAPMO R&T certified against NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and PFHpA reduction at up to 99.82%.

It is also a complete kit: the 20 inch Big Blue housing with integrated pressure relief valve, the certified cartridge, mounting bracket, screws, housing wrench, and manual. One cartridge covers 40,000 gallons or about 12 months of whole-house protection. And you get 7-day expert support from people with 29+ years of water treatment experience who will tell you honestly if this is not the right fit for your home.

Your Family's Drinking Water Is Too Important to Gamble On

If this FloPlus Protect system fails to reduce the PFAS compounds it is certified for (PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, PFHpA) in your water within 30 days of installation, contact us and we will work with you to resolve it - whether that means troubleshooting your setup, reviewing your water chemistry and pre-filtration, replacing a component, or issuing a full refund. No shipping the system back to a warehouse. No restocking fees. No runaround.

10,000+ Systems Installed
455+ Verified Reviews
29+ Success Rate

PFAS are invisible, tasteless, and odorless, which makes trusting your filtration system essential. That is why we back this system with a real guarantee, not a return policy designed to discourage returns. We have spent 29+ years helping homeowners solve water contamination problems, and we chose the FloPlus Protect because it is one of the very few sub-$400 whole-house options with a genuine third-party PFAS certification: IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 53, up to 99.82% reduction.

The Industry "Return Policy" Trap +

Most online water treatment retailers offer a return policy that requires you to ship the system back at your expense. After paying for return freight, you often find a 15-25% restocking fee on top of it. It is designed to make returns impractical. For something as serious as PFAS in your family's water, you should not have to gamble on whether a filter actually works.

How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
It Doesn't Reduce the PFAS

If post-install testing shows the certified compounds aren't being reduced as the IAPMO certification proves the cartridge can, that's on us.

2
You Call Us, We Fix It

We troubleshoot with you: water test results, feed pressure, sediment fouling, cartridge seating, flow rates. Most issues come down to setup and are resolved on one call.

Full Refund, No Hassle

If we cannot resolve the issue, you get a full refund. We handle the logistics. You do not ship anything back. That is the difference between a real guarantee and a return policy.

Aidan

PFAS are one of the contaminants I take most seriously because you cannot see, taste, or smell them. The first thing I do is look at your lab test. If it shows PFOA, PFOS, or the other compounds this block is certified for, and you have a 1-2 bathroom home on city water, the FloPlus is an honest budget answer. If your test shows more PFAS species, higher levels, or you have a bigger home, I will point you to our ion exchange or Pioneer systems instead. Send me your test and I will tell you straight which one fits.
