Whole House Water Filter and Softener Packages

Many homes have hard water plus one more problem: iron or acidic (low pH) water on a well, or chlorine on city water. A softener only takes out the hardness, so the second problem needs its own tank. Each package pairs the two, sized together.

Start with your second problem: iron (from $3,395), acidic water (from $3,095) or chlorine on city or well water (from $2,195). Several problems on a well start at $5,975 here, and our larger systems are on the well water systems page. Not tested yet? The well water test or the city water test ($199 each) shows which package you need, or whether a softener alone will do.

Water Filter vs Water Softener: What's the Difference?
Watch the 3-minute explainer

Why the filter goes first on a well. Aidan: "we put a dedicated iron filter in first ... 'cause iron weakens the softener resin over time and shortens the life of it." An acid neutralizer raises the pH by dissolving calcite, which adds hardness, and "you have to take that out with the water softener." On city water, the carbon tank takes out the chlorine, which Aidan says "shortens the life of the softener resin."

Iron and Hard Water: Iron Filter + Softener

For orange or brown stains plus hard water on a well. The Fleck 2510AIO iron filter (Katalox Light) is rated up to 30 ppm iron, 15 ppm manganese and 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide. It works best near pH 8. If your pH is lower, send Aidan your test before you order. The softener after it takes out the hardness. Above 30 ppm iron, The Iron Buster puts two iron filters in a row.

Acidic Water and Hard Water: Acid Neutralizer + Softener

For blue-green stains plus hard water. The neutralizer's calcite raises the pH and adds some hardness, which the softener after it takes out. The 2.5 handles pH down to 5.5. The 1.5 suits 1 or 2 people at pH 6.0 and up. The Clack neutralizers need no drain or power. If your iron is above 0.5 ppm, pick a backwashing Fleck neutralizer.

Chlorine and Hard Water: Carbon Filter + Softener

For chlorine taste and smell plus hard water, on city water or a well. Every carbon tank holds Centaur catalytic carbon, which also takes out chloramine. The All In One puts the carbon and the softener resin in one tank; the others are two tanks.

Iron, acid, chlorine or no salt: how the pairs differ

Every package is a softener (or a salt-free conditioner) plus the tank that fixes your second problem. Here is how the pairs differ.

Do you need both?

When a package is the right fix

A softener fixes hard water and nothing else. If your water has a second problem, that problem needs its own tank. Here is how to tell.

Orange iron stains in a white sink

Orange or brown stains, and scale on fixtures

Iron plus hardness. A softener handles only a little iron, up to about 1 ppm on the 48,000 grain. Iron also wears out its resin. An iron filter goes in first.

YES Iron filter + softener
Blue-green corrosion on a copper pipe joint

Blue-green stains or green crust on copper pipes, and spots on glasses

Acidic water plus hardness. The neutralizer adds some hardness as it raises the pH, and the softener takes it out. If your hardness stays under about 7 grains after the neutralizer, Aidan says some homes skip the softener.

YES Acid neutralizer + softener
White hard water scale on a showerhead

Only scale and spots: no stains, no smell, no chlorine taste

That is hard water alone. A softener by itself fixes it and costs less than any package.

NO A softener alone
Two water sample bottles from the well water test kit, on a table

Test before you buy two tanks

A lab test shows your hardness, iron and pH, so you buy the package you need, or only a softener. The Well Water Test ($199) reads 53 contaminants and values; on city water, use the City Water Test ($199). Send us your result and we size your system free.

Chlorine taste plus hard water, on city water or a well? See the carbon filter and softener packages above, from $2,195. Hardness only? A water softener alone is enough. Iron or acidic water without hardness? Start with an iron filter or an acid neutralizer. Several problems on a well? See the 3-tank and 5-stage packages above, or our well water systems.

Pick a size

What size package do you need?

In a package, the softener size comes from your hardness and how many people live in the house, and the filter size comes from the problem and your well. These are the bands Aidan uses. Over 30 grains or 7 or more people, text Aidan your test.

48,000 grain softener (packages from $3,095)

1 to 4 people on water up to about 15 grains, or 1 or 2 people up to about 30. Used in the iron 1.5 and 2.5, acid neutralizer 1.5 and 2.5, carbon 1.5, 3-tank and 5-stage packages.

64,000 grain softener (packages from $3,495)

5 or 6 people up to about 15 grains; 3 people at about 16 to 30; 4 people at about 16 to 20. Used in the iron 2.5, acid neutralizer 2.5 and carbon 2.5 packages and The Iron Buster.

80,000 grain softener (packages from $4,695)

5 or 6 people at about 16 to 30 grains, or 4 people at about 21 to 30. Used in the iron 3.5 and acid neutralizer 3.5 packages.

Grains per gallon (gpg)

How hardness is measured. Aidan treats about 7 grains and up as worth softening.

Iron filter size

1.5 for about 2 to 4 people with lower iron; 2.5 for 4 to 10 people, the size most homes buy; 3.5 for irrigation off the same well, unusually high use, or more than 10 people. Each is rated to 30 ppm iron.

Acid neutralizer size

1.5 for 1 or 2 people at pH 6.0 and up; 2.5 for pH down to 5.5. Below 5.5, Aidan adds FloMag to the calcite.

Well flow to backwash

An iron filter rinses itself to a drain and needs flow from your well to do it: about 5 gallons a minute for a 1.5, 10 for a 2.5, and 12 to 15 for a 3.5.

Installation

Two tanks, one plumber visit

What to have ready

  • Floor space on the main lineRoom for two tanks and the softener's brine tank. On a well they go after the pressure tank.
  • A drainThe softener, the iron filter and any backwashing tank rinse to a floor drain, utility sink or standpipe. Your plumber supplies the drain tubing.
  • An outlet that stays onThe Fleck valves plug in. The Clack neutralizers and carbon tanks need no power.
  • Enough flow from the wellAn iron filter needs about 5 to 15 gallons a minute to backwash, by size (see Sizing).
  • Your water testSo Aidan can confirm both sizes before you order.

What your plumber does

  1. Your plumber shuts off the water and sets the tanks in the order Aidan gives for your water. On a well, the iron filter goes before the softener.
  2. Loads each tank's media from its bags through the funnel, then sets the control valves back on the tanks.
  3. Plumbs the main line through each valve and runs drain tubing from each valve that rinses to a drain.
  4. Plugs in the electric valves and sets the clock. Aidan can help your plumber with the settings by phone.
  5. Turns the water back on slowly and checks every fitting for drips.

Want a second set of eyes before you order? Text Aidan your water test and a photo of where the tanks will go. He'll confirm the sizes and flag anything your plumber should know.

Amazing System
This system has been a game changer. We have 14ppm iron and this system has brought it down to almost zero. Highly recommend! Also, the service at Mid Atlantic Water is exceptional! Very helpful throughout the entire installation process. Glad we went with them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Only if your water has two problems. A softener takes out hardness (calcium and magnesium) and nothing else. Iron, acidic water and chlorine each need their own tank. If your test shows only hardness, a water softener alone is enough. If it shows iron, low pH or chlorine and no hardness, you need only that filter. See water filter vs water softener.

On a well, the iron filter goes before the softener, so iron never reaches the resin. Aidan: "we put a dedicated iron filter in first ... 'cause iron weakens the softener resin over time and shortens the life of it." An acid neutralizer also goes before the softener, because its calcite adds hardness that the softener then takes out. With an iron filter and a neutralizer together, Aidan sets their order from your test.

A softener paired with one filter costs $3,095 to $5,195. The one-tank carbon and softener is $2,195. Packages with three or more tanks cost $5,975 to $6,995 (October 2026 prices). A plumber adds about $700 to $1,000 for a softener and one filter, by Aidan's estimate. After that, the main running cost is softener salt, about $100 a year at Aidan's house, plus media every few years. See what a whole house system costs.

Yes, for chlorine. The Fleck 5600SXT All In One ($2,195) holds Centaur carbon above the softener resin in one dual-chamber tank, for chlorine taste plus hardness, and takes less floor space. For iron or acidic water, our packages use two tanks.

Yes. Each package we can price both ways costs $95 to $1,095 less than the same tanks bought one at a time, and most acid neutralizer pairs are $195 less (prices on October 2, 2026).

It comes from your hardness and how many people live in the house. A 48,000 grain fits 1 to 4 people up to about 15 grains, or 1 or 2 up to about 30. A 64,000 grain fits 5 or 6 people up to about 15 grains, 3 people at about 16 to 30, or 4 people at about 16 to 20. An 80,000 grain fits 5 or 6 people at about 16 to 30 grains. Over 30 grains or 7 or more people, text Aidan your test.

We recommend a licensed plumber. Every tank ships empty, with its media in separate bags that your plumber loads at install, and drain tubing is not included. Aidan's estimate for a softener and one filter is 3 to 4 hours and $700 to $1,000, and he supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810.
