Most homeowners complete both systems in 4-6 hours. The iron filter needs a 120V outlet and a drain line (for backwash). The softener needs the same: 120V outlet and a drain. Both use 1" NPT threaded connections.

Correct Installation Order (This Matters)

Well / Pressure Tank → Sediment Filter (optional) → Iron Filter → Water Softener → House

⚠️ Order matters: The iron filter must come before the water softener. Dissolved iron fouls softener resin quickly: the iron binds to the resin beads and never releases during regeneration, slowly killing softening capacity. Removing the iron first protects the softener resin for its full 10-15 year life.

Step 1 - Iron Filter (Fleck 2510AIO)

Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
Position the tank on a level surface, near a drain (backwash sends water out during regen)
Connect inlet and outlet to the main water line using 1" NPT fittings (water direction is marked on the valve head)
Run a 1/2" drain line from the valve to a floor drain, utility sink, or outside (max 20 feet, no traps)
Hand-tighten the valve, then only a quarter to half turn with channel locks - over-tightening can crack the tank lip
Plug the valve into a standard 120V outlet
Open bypass slowly, let the tank fill, then switch to service
Program the 2510AIO valve: time of day, regen frequency (every 3-4 days for most wells)
Run a manual backwash cycle to set the media bed and flush initial fines

Step 2 - Water Softener (Fleck 5600SXT)

Position the softener downstream of the iron filter
Connect inlet and outlet to the main water line - water direction is marked on the valve head
Run a 1/2" drain line from the valve to a floor drain, utility sink, or outside (max 20 feet)
Plug in to a standard 120V outlet
Add salt to the brine tank - fill about halfway with water softener salt pellets (not rock salt)
Open bypass slowly, fill the resin tank, then switch to service
Program the 5600SXT valve: time of day, water hardness, and tank capacity
Run a manual regeneration cycle to flush the system and seat the resin bed

Iron Filter Maintenance

Every 3-4 Days Automatic backwash. The 2510AIO valve refreshes the air pocket and backwashes iron/sediment out the drain. No action needed from you - it's programmed once at install.
Annually Test your water. Confirm iron, manganese, and sulfur are still removed. If iron breakthrough starts showing up in toilet tanks or fixtures, regen frequency may need to increase.
Every 8-12 Years Replace the Katalox-Light media. Katalox-Light is the longest-lasting AIO filter media. With well-configured backwash cycles, customers regularly get 10+ years before replacement.

Water Softener Maintenance

Monthly Check salt level. Keep the brine tank at least 1/3 full with water softener salt pellets. Avoid rock salt - it contains impurities that can clog the brine system.
Annually Clean the brine tank. Let the salt run low and clean out any salt bridges or mushing that can impair regeneration.
Every 10-15 Years Replace the softener resin. 10% crosslink resin outlasts standard 8% by 20-30%. Signs of worn resin: hard water returning, increased salt usage, or resin beads in water.
As Needed Check the venturi and injector. If regeneration seems sluggish, the venturi assembly may need cleaning. Takes 5 minutes with no tools.
