Yellow or tea-colored water that stays yellow even after it sits in a glass usually means tannins: dissolved organic compounds from decaying leaves and vegetation that leach into shallow groundwater. Tannins are not a health hazard, but they stain laundry and fixtures, taste tangy, and will not respond to an iron filter. Here is how to confirm them, and what actually removes them.

What Tannins Are and How They Get Into Wells

Tannins are large organic molecules (humic and fulvic acids) produced as leaves, peat, and other vegetation decompose. Rain and surface water percolate through that decaying organic layer and carry the dissolved tannins down into the aquifer. It is the same chemistry that colors a cup of tea: water passing through plant material picks up the tint.

That origin explains exactly who gets them:

  • Shallow and dug wells, which draw from groundwater closest to the organic topsoil layer. Deep drilled wells in rock rarely see meaningful tannin levels.
  • Coastal plains and low-lying areas: swampy ground, high water tables, and peaty soils. In our region that includes the Delmarva Peninsula, southern New Jersey's pinelands, and Virginia's Tidewater.
  • Heavily wooded lots and properties near wetlands, where the organic layer feeding the groundwater is thick.
  • Wells with surface water influence: if tannin color spikes after heavy rain, surface runoff may be reaching your well, which is worth investigating on its own (it is also a bacteria pathway; see testing for coliform bacteria).

Are tannins regulated? No. The EPA does not set a limit for tannins because they are an aesthetic (secondary) issue, not a health hazard. There is no "unsafe" tannin level; there is only the level at which you stop tolerating yellow laundry. Most people notice color at roughly 0.5 to 1 ppm and act somewhere above 1 to 2 ppm.

Two less obvious costs of living with tannins:

  • They sabotage UV disinfection. Tannin color absorbs UV light, reducing the dose that reaches bacteria. If your well needs a UV purifier, tannins upstream must come out first or the UV cannot do its job.
  • They foul water softener resin. Tannins slowly coat standard cation resin, cutting softening capacity over years. Homes with both hardness and tannins should treat tannins ahead of (or alongside) the softener.
