The 10% crosslink resin typically lasts 7-10 years before needing replacement (longer than standard 8% resin because it resists chlorine degradation better).

Standard water softener resin uses 8% crosslinking in the polymer structure. Our 10% crosslink resin has a tighter molecular bond that makes it more resistant to chlorine damage, oxidation, and physical breakdown. This means it lasts 20-30% longer than standard resin — especially important if you're on city water with chlorine, or well water with iron. The higher crosslink percentage also maintains better bead integrity over time, so you get consistent softening performance year after year.

The Fleck 5600SXT tracks your actual water usage and only regenerates when the resin is actually exhausted — not on a fixed timer. This saves salt and water compared to timer-based systems that regenerate whether they need to or not. The valve calculates your remaining soft water capacity based on your programmed hardness level and the amount of water you've used, then triggers regeneration at the optimal time (usually 2 AM). You can also see the remaining capacity on the backlit LCD display.

Size depends on your water hardness (in grains per gallon) and daily water usage. A 32,000-grain softener handles 2-5 people with 2-3 bathrooms. Yes — most homeowners with basic plumbing skills install these themselves. The system ships with the resin pre-loaded in the tank and the bypass valve pre-installed on the control head, so the main work is connecting the inlet/outlet to your plumbing (1" connections) and running a drain line. If your water pH is below 7.0 (acidic), yes — you should install an acid neutralizer before the water softener. Acidic water corrodes plumbing and can damage the softener's resin and valve over time. The neutralizer raises your pH to a safe level, and the softener then removes the hardness. This is especially common with well water in the Mid-Atlantic region. We sell acid neutralizer and water softener packages that include both systems.

A water softener can remove small amounts of dissolved (clear water) iron — typically up to 2-3 PPM. For higher iron levels, you need a dedicated iron filter installed before the water softener. Iron damages softener resin over time, so if your water test shows more than 2-3 PPM of iron, we recommend an iron filter and water softener package to protect both systems and give you clean, soft water.
