Water Softener Cost: What You'll Actually Pay in 2026
Buy a water softener online and hire a licensed plumber, and you are at about $2,200 to $3,500 all in: one of our Fleck 5600SXT softeners is $1,495 to $2,495 shipped, and the plumber is about $700 to $1,000. The dealer quotes callers read me for one softener ran $2,200 to $6,750 this year. A big-box cabinet softener is $400 to $720 before anyone installs it.
After that, a softener costs about $5 to $12 a month to run on a well, and a few dollars more on city water. Most of it is salt. Here is what each size uses, what wears out over the years, and what each way of buying gets you for the money.

Quick Answer
An owned water softener costs about $5 to $18 a month to run, and salt is most of it.
- Salt. About $5 a month on a 32,000 grain softener up to about $11.50 on an 80,000, at about $9 for a 40 lb bag. See what each size uses.
- Electricity and water. Under $3 a year for the valve. The water each regeneration sends to the drain adds about $2 to $6 a month on city water, and nothing on a well. See operating costs.
- Upkeep. No service contract. Over the years, the parts you might buy are valve parts and resin. See what upkeep costs.
- Renting. About $25 to $50 a month, plus your own salt. See what renting costs.
- Buying. $400 to $720 at a big-box store, $1,495 to $2,495 for our Fleck softeners plus about $700 to $1,000 for a plumber, or $2,200 to $6,750 in dealer quotes. See the three price tiers.
- Size. Your hardness and how many people live there set the size, and the size sets the salt. See our prices by size.

The 3 Price Tiers of Water Softeners
I sort the softeners people ask me about into three price tiers, and much of the gap between them is who installs it and who services it. Much of a dealer quote pays the salesman, the installer and the office, not the equipment.
| Where you buy | What you pay | What you get for it |
|---|---|---|
| Big-box store (Rheem, Whirlpool, Morton and others) | $400 to $720 for the softener, plus a plumber | A one-piece cabinet softener. Whirlpool and Rheem both put the average life of theirs at about 8 to 10 years. Big-Box Water Softeners Compared |
| Online, with your own plumber (our Fleck 5600SXT) | $1,495 to $2,495 shipped, plus about $700 to $1,000 for a licensed plumber | A two-tank Fleck softener, plus phone help for you and your plumber |
| A dealer, installed (Culligan, Kinetico, EcoWater, RainSoft and local companies) | $2,200 to $6,750 for one softener, in the quotes callers read me this year | Comparable hardware, installed by the dealer, with their service visits. Got a $15,000 Water Treatment Quote? |
What a dealer really gives you for the money is the installation and someone who comes back when it acts up. That is worth something. Buying online, you get a comparable two-tank softener for less, and the install and the service calls are yours to arrange: a licensed plumber puts it in, and I help you and your plumber by phone and text. The brand pages break the dealer quotes down: Culligan Water Softener Cost, Kinetico Water Softener Cost, EcoWater Systems Cost and Reviews and RainSoft Reviews and Cost.
Average Cost of a Water Softener (2026 National Data)
If you have been searching for the average cost of a water softener, here is the honest national picture. Across the major cost aggregators, the average cost of a water softener is $400 to $3,000 for the equipment alone, and most homeowners pay $1,000 to $3,000 all-in once installation is included. Those two ranges are Modernize's. Angi says most homeowners pay around $1,500 installed, HomeGuide puts a softener with installation at $1,200 to $3,800, and Culligan's own cost guide says a professional-grade softener "might land closer to $5,000."
Our Fleck softeners sit inside those ranges: $1,495 to $2,495 shipped, or about $2,200 to $3,500 with a licensed plumber.
Annual Operating Costs: Salt, Water, and Electricity
The annual cost to run a water softener is $50 to $150 for most homes (national estimates agree: HomeGuide puts salt at $50 to $150 a year). Salt is by far the biggest line item, and how much you use comes down to the size of the softener and how many gallons your house runs through it.
The grain number is how much hardness a softener holds before it cleans itself, so a bigger house or harder water needs a bigger number. A softener that is sized right regenerates (cleans its resin with salt water) about once a week, every 3,000 to 4,000 gallons. Here is what one regeneration a week works out to on each Fleck 5600SXT size, at $8.76 for a 40 lb bag of pellet salt (Walmart, October 1, 2026):
| Softener size | Salt per cleaning cycle | Salt per month | Salt cost per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32,000 grain | About 5 lb | About 22 lb | About $5 |
| 48,000 grain | About 7 lb | About 30 lb | About $7 |
| 64,000 grain | About 10 lb | About 43 lb | About $9.50 |
| 80,000 grain | About 12 lb | About 52 lb | About $11.50 |
My own house runs a 48,000 grain 5600SXT with three people, and it regenerates once a week to once every two weeks. I use one 40 lb bag of plain pellet salt every 30 to 45 days, about $6 to $9 a month. I buy it at Walmart in the garden section; I skip solar salt because it leaves a dirty residue in the tank. I told a caller in Minnesota who lives alone that he would probably use one bag every 45 to 60 days.
An undersized softener regenerates more often, and every regeneration uses salt. As I told a caller in August, "A lot of companies put softeners in that are too small, and you're going through bag, 2, 3, 4 bags of salt per month." Getting the size right is in What Size Water Softener Do I Need?
How much electricity a softener uses
The Fleck 5600SXT runs off a 12 volt plug-in adapter that Pentair rates at 150 milliamps, which is under 2 watts. Left on all year, that is about 16 kilowatt-hours, under $3 a year at the national average electric rate (18.31 cents in July 2026). It does need an outlet that is always on, not one on a switch.
Water used during the cleaning cycle
Each regeneration sends about 25 to 50 gallons to the drain on a 48,000 grain, 35 to 65 on a 64,000 and 50 to 80 on an 80,000, so about 110 to 345 gallons a month. The average American family uses more than 300 gallons a day at home, so that adds about 1% to 4% to your water use. On a private well there is no water bill for it. On city water, at the national average water and sewer rate ($16.83 per 1,000 gallons in 2024, per EPA WaterSense), it comes to about $2 to $6 a month.
Our water softener prices by size
These are our live prices, checked October 1, 2026, with free shipping to the lower 48 states. Most homes get the 48,000 grain, at $1,995.
| Softener | Who it fits (people, hardness) | Price, shipped |
|---|---|---|
| Fleck 5600SXT, 32,000 grain | 1 to 3 people, hardness up to about 15 grains per gallon | $1,495 |
| Fleck 5600SXT, 48,000 grain | 1 to 4 people up to about 15 grains, or 1 or 2 people up to about 30 | $1,995 |
| Fleck 5600SXT, 64,000 grain | 5 or 6 people up to about 15 grains, 4 people at 16 to 20, or 3 people at 16 to 30 | $2,195 |
| Fleck 5600SXT, 80,000 grain | 5 or 6 people at about 16 to 30 grains, or 4 people at 21 to 30 | $2,495 |
| Fleck 9100SXT twin tank, 64,000 or 80,000 grain | Most homes do not need two tanks. It sizes like a single tank and only keeps soft water flowing while a tank regenerates. | $2,695 or $2,995 |
| Salt-free conditioner, 2.5 cu ft | Scale control without salt. It does not remove hardness. The media (the granules inside) is replaced about every 3 years, at about $1,200. | $2,895 |
Over 30 grains, or 7 or more people, text me before you pick a size. If you do not have a hardness number yet, our well water test kit ($199) reports hardness, iron and pH from one sample; on city water, the city water test kit is also $199. We also carry Bluetooth smart softeners in the same three sizes for $1,495 to $1,895; I put most homes on the Fleck.
What ships: the resin tank (a Vortech tank), shipped empty; the control valve with the bypass valve pre-installed; the brine tank; and the resin in separate bags, loaded into the tank at install. Drain tubing, pipe fittings and salt are not included.
When the test calls for more than a softener, we sell the pair as a package: an acid neutralizer and softener runs $3,095 to $5,195 (Acid Neutralizer Cost), an iron filter and softener $3,395 to $4,695 (Iron Filter Cost for Well Water), and a carbon filter and softener for chlorinated city water $3,195 to $3,795.

8 AM to 5 PM Eastern, seven days a week. A real person, not a call center. What a plumber charges to put one in
A licensed plumber typically charges about $700 to $1,000 to install a softener and finishes in 2 to 3 hours. A twin tank takes him 3 to 4 hours. We recommend a licensed plumber, and I support your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810 while he works. He supplies the pipe fittings and the 1/2 inch drain tubing; the softener needs a floor drain, utility sink or standpipe within about 20 feet, and a standard outlet nearby. The steps he follows are in How to Install a Water Softener.
What upkeep costs over the years
An owned Fleck softener needs no service contract: you keep salt in the brine tank, and that is most of the upkeep. As I told a caller in San Diego in September, "The softener, the resin never gets changed. You just keep salt in the salt tank for backwashing, and that's it."
- Resin. In my service work, 10% crosslink resin on water protected from iron and chlorine has lasted 30 to 40 years; iron and chlorine shorten it. If it ever needs replacing, the resin is $295 a cubic foot, and the 48,000 grain holds 1.5 cubic feet. Water Softener Resin
- Valve. "10 or 15 years down the road, you may have to replace some pistons or a control board, which is fairly simple to do." The parts are common, and a whole new 5600SXT valve is $545.
- Warranty. 5 years on the control valve, 10 on the resin tank and 5 on the brine tank, against manufacturer defects.
Dealer service plans are a different budget. HomeGuide puts softener maintenance at $100 to $300 or more a year, Modernize puts annual maintenance at $150 to $900, and Angi says repairs run $150 to $900 on average. When something on ours acts up, the fixes are in Water Softener Troubleshooting, and you can text me.
What renting a water softener costs
Angi puts a rented softener at $25 to $50 a month, and you still buy the salt. Over 10 years that is $3,000 to $6,000 in rent alone, against $1,995 plus the plumber for a 48,000 grain you own. The full rent-or-buy math, with real rental offers, is in Renting a Water Softener vs Buying.
What a softener costs over 10 years
Over 10 years, buying online and paying a plumber costs about $3,535 to $3,835 for a 48,000 grain, salt included. The table adds the same $7 a month in salt to every tier, so the difference you see is the purchase and the install.
| Big-box store softener | Our 48,000 grain, installed by your plumber | Dealer quote, one softener | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Softener | $400 to $720 | $1,995 shipped | $2,200 to $6,750, as quoted |
| Installation | A plumber, about $700 to $1,000 | About $700 to $1,000 | Ask whether the quote includes it |
| Salt for 10 years | About $840 | About $840 | About $840 |
| 10-year total | About $1,940 to $2,560 | About $3,535 to $3,835 | About $3,040 to $7,590 |
| At year 10 | Near the end of the maker's 8 to 10 year average life | The resin keeps going. The valve can be repaired. | Depends on the dealer's parts and service |
A cabinet softener is the cheapest way in, and for a small house on city water with no iron it can do the whole job. The extra you pay for a two-tank softener buys a valve you can rebuild and resin that keeps going past the cabinet's average life.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run a water softener per month?
Plan on $5 to $18 per month total. That includes salt ($4 to $12/month depending on hardness and household size), minimal electricity (under $1/month), and water used during regeneration. On well water, the water cost is effectively zero since there is no metered water bill.
Is a water softener worth the money?
For water at about 7 grains per gallon or harder, yes. In the Water Quality Research Foundation's tests, gas water heaters on 30 grain water lost as much as 24% of their efficiency, while the ones on softened water kept their factory rating over a 15-year life. In the same foundation's tests, softened water let laundry detergent be cut by half, and dishwashing used up to 70% less detergent.
How long does a water softener last?
On a two-tank softener like the Fleck 5600SXT, the valve is serviceable and the resin is the long-lasting part (see what upkeep costs). Whirlpool and Rheem put the average life of their cabinet softeners at about 8 to 10 years. The rest is in How Long Do Water Softeners Last?
Do I need a plumber to install a water softener?
We recommend a licensed plumber. He ties it into the main water line, runs the drain tubing and plugs the valve into an outlet, and I support your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810.
What is the best water softener to buy for your house?
For most homes I recommend the Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 grain. Which size and which other equipment you need depends on your water test; the picks are in Best Water Softener for Well Water.
What is the downside of a water softener?
You buy salt for as long as you own it, about a bag a month at my house, and it needs a drain and an outlet nearby. It also adds a small amount of sodium to the water; how much is covered in my guide to why softened water tastes salty.
