Not Sure if You Need a Twin Tank Softener?A twin makes sense when even a few gallons of hard water during regeneration matter to you, usually with very hard water. It adds no capacity, and most homes do well with a single tank. Aidan can review your water test results and daily usage to tell you whether a single-tank 5600SXT or a twin-tank 9100SXT is the right call. No obligation, no sales pressure.
Complete 80,000 Grain Twin Tank Water Softener System
✓Fleck 9100SXT control valve (Pentair): the control head on top; it counts gallons, switches to the other tank by itself when one is used up, and keeps your settings through power outages
✓Two Vortech mineral tanks (13" x 54" each): shipped empty; the resin goes in at install
✓2.5 cubic feet of 10% crosslink softener resin per tank (5 in all): the softening beads, in separate bags, loaded at install; a tougher grade than the standard 8%
✓1" stainless steel bypass valve: pre-installed on the control valve; it lets water go around the softener during service
✓Brine (salt) tank with safety float: helps prevent overflow
✓ Free shipping to the lower 48 states
What ships: both mineral tanks, the control valve with the bypass valve pre-installed, the brine tank, and the softener resin in separate bags. Resin is loaded into the tanks at install. Drain tubing, pipe fittings and salt are not included. We recommend installation by a licensed plumber; Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. For homes with acidic water (pH below 7), add an acid neutralizer before the softener to protect the plumbing.

Bypass pre-installed. Resin for both tanks ships bagged, loaded at install. We recommend a licensed plumber, who typically needs 3 to 4 hours for the twin; Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810.
Space planning: A twin needs more floor space than a single tank: two mineral tanks side by side plus the brine tank. The whole system is about 50" wide, 57" tall and 20" deep for the 64,000 grain, and about 52" wide, 63" tall and 20" deep for the 80,000 grain.
Installation Steps (for your plumber)
Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
Position both mineral tanks and the brine tank near a floor drain, utility sink or standpipe
Load the resin, divided between the two tanks, keeping resin out of the center tubes
Mount the 9100SXT valve and connect it to both mineral tanks
Connect the 1" stainless bypass to your main water line; water direction is marked on the valve (your plumber supplies the pipe adapters)
Run 1/2" flexible drain tubing from the valve to the drain, within about 20 feet (your plumber sets the routing)
Connect the brine line from the valve to the brine tank and add a couple of bags of plain pellet softener salt
Open the bypass valve slowly to fill both tanks, then switch to service position
Program the 9100SXT valve: time of day, water hardness and capacity (Aidan gives your plumber the numbers)
Recommended System Order
Well or City Supply→Pressure Tank (well only)→Sediment Filter (if needed)→Iron Filter or Acid Neutralizer (if needed)→Twin Tank Softener (this unit)→House

✨
Low maintenance: the 9100SXT handles regeneration and tank switching automatically. Just keep salt in the brine tank and the system takes care of itself.
Maintenance Schedule
MonthlyCheck salt level. Keep a couple of bags of plain pellet salt in the brine tank, with the salt level always higher than the water level. Avoid rock salt: it leaves a residue in the tank.
When NeededReplace the softener resin (both tanks). How long it lasts depends on your water: in Aidan's service work, 10% crosslink resin on water protected from iron and chlorine has lasted 30 to 40 years, while iron and chlorine shorten it. Signs: hard water returning, more salt use, or resin beads in the water.
AnnuallyClean the system and test your water. Pentair's manual calls for cleaning the system at least once a year, and a hardness test of your incoming and softened water every year.
As NeededClean the injector (the part that draws salt water). If the system stops drawing brine from the salt tank, Pentair's manual lists a plugged injector and filter as a cause: clean them, or call Aidan.
Pro tip: Always use 10% crosslink resin for replacement: standard 8% breaks down faster, especially if you have any chlorine in your water. Questions? Call 800-460-5810 or text Aidan at 443-277-2204.
"Mid Atlantic Water was great to deal with. I highly recommend them, great pricing, fast shipping and awesome communication. I called before ordering to discuss the well tank, iron filter and softener that I was going to purchase. Aidan answered all my questions, confirmed my research and choices where good and that the equipment would handle and correct the condition of my water." ★★★★★

Do You Need a Twin Tank Softener?
What a Twin Tank Does, and Who Needs One
The Fleck 9100SXT runs two Vortech mineral tanks from one valve, and only one tank softens at a time. When one tank has softened its set number of gallons, the valve switches to the other tank and recharges the used one with salt, so you never get hard water while it recharges.
That is the only difference from a single tank. It adds no capacity, meaning no more softening between recharges: each tank holds 2.5 cubic feet of 10% crosslink resin, the same as our single-tank 80,000 grain softener, which costs less. Aidan's view after 32 years in the business: "in most applications, there's really no need for a dual tank system." A single tank usually regenerates at night while most people are asleep, and if someone showers at that hour, its regeneration time can be moved.
A twin makes sense when your water is very hard and even a toilet flush or an early shower during regeneration would let hard water through, or when you simply want soft water at every hour. The 80,000 grain twin fits 5 or 6 people when your water test shows about 16 to 30 grains per gallon of hardness, or 4 people at about 21 to 30. With very hard water, about 40 grains and up, Aidan recommends two single softeners, one after the other, instead. Send him your water test before you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most homes do well with a single tank. A twin like the 9100SXT gives you soft water even while a tank regenerates (recharges with salt): one tank softens while the other recharges. A single tank regenerates at night, usually at 2 AM, in about an hour and a half, and a few gallons of hard water can get by if someone uses water then.
That is the only difference. A twin adds no capacity, because only one tank softens at a time, and in Aidan's experience a single tank is more efficient with salt. If someone showers during the night regeneration, the time on a single tank can be moved. A twin makes sense when even that bit of hard water matters to you, usually with very hard water. Send Aidan your water test if you are not sure.
One 9100SXT valve on top controls both tanks, and only one tank softens at a time. The valve counts the gallons used. When the tank in service reaches its programmed gallons, the valve switches to the other tank and regenerates the used one, so you get soft water even during regeneration. The regenerated tank then waits as the standby. Your settings are saved through power outages.
Size a twin the way you size a single tank, because only one tank softens at a time. Your water test gives your hardness in grains per gallon. The 64,000 grain twin fits 5 or 6 people on water up to about 15 grains per gallon, 4 people at about 16 to 20, or 3 people at about 16 to 30. The 80,000 grain twin fits 5 or 6 people at about 16 to 30 grains, or 4 people at about 21 to 30. Over 30 grains or 7 or more people, call 800-460-5810 or text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with your water test first; with very hard water he recommends two single softeners in series instead.
Yes, we recommend a licensed plumber. The system ships with the bypass valve pre-installed and the resin in separate bags, divided between the two tanks at install. Your plumber connects the valve to both tanks, connects the 1" bypass to your main line (your plumber supplies the pipe adapters), runs 1/2" drain tubing and plugs in the valve. A licensed plumber typically needs 3 to 4 hours. The twin takes more floor space than a single tank, so plan for that. Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810, 7 days a week, 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern, and gives the valve settings.
The Fleck 9100SXT valve is serviceable: "ten or fifteen years down the road, you may have to replace some pistons or a control board, which is fairly simple to do," Aidan says, and Fleck parts are easy to find. The valve carries a 5-year warranty and the Vortech mineral tanks 10 years, against manufacturer defects. In Aidan's service work, 10% crosslink resin on water protected from iron and chlorine has lasted 30 to 40 years; iron and chlorine shorten it.
Do not count on it. The valve uses each tank fully before it switches, but in Aidan's experience a single tank is the more efficient one: "Single tank's more efficient with salt and water discharge." Choose a twin for soft water during regeneration, not for salt savings.
If your water pH is below 7.0 (acidic), yes. Install an acid neutralizer before the softener. Acidic water corrodes plumbing over time. The neutralizer raises your pH to a safe level, then the softener removes hardness. This is especially common with well water. We sell acid neutralizer and water softener packages that include both systems.

Fleck 9100SXT 80,000 G...$2,995.00
Why Our Twin Tank Softener Costs More
Fleck 9100SXT Twin Tank vs Budget Water Softeners
What You Get With Budget Water Softeners
Budget water softeners sold on Amazon and at big box stores often use no-name valves, low-grade resin, and timer-based regeneration that wastes salt and water. When the valve fails, parts can be hard to find, and you end up replacing the whole system.
The resin in cheap softeners is often standard 8% crosslink, or an unmarked grade, which breaks down faster if you have any chlorine in your water, and there's no expert support to help when things go wrong.
The Real Cost Comparison

Our 80,000 Grain Twin Tank

✅Lifespan: Lasts 15+ years with routine media replacement
✅Result: Done right the first time, peace of mind
✅Support: Lifetime USA Support
$0.41-0.55/day (if it lasts 15-20 years)
If it lasts 15 to 20 years, its purchase price per day is in the same range as a budget softener that has to be replaced every 3 to 4 years. It costs more than our single-tank 80,000 grain softener, which has the same capacity per tank; the difference buys soft water during regeneration.
What You Get With This System
The Fleck 9100SXT (Pentair) is a twin alternating valve: one tank softens while the other regenerates, so you get soft water even during regeneration. It adds no capacity over a single tank of the same size, and in Aidan's experience a single tank is more efficient with salt. We pair it with 10% crosslink resin, a tougher grade than standard 8% resin that holds up better on chlorinated water.
Every system ships with the bypass valve pre-installed and the resin in separate bags for loading at install, and you get 7-day-a-week expert support from Aidan, who has 32 years in this business. He helps you decide between a single tank and the twin, supports your plumber through the install, and helps with programming and troubleshooting, at no extra cost.

455+Verified Reviews
After 29+ years of selling and supporting water softeners, we know what works and what doesn't. The Fleck 9100SXT twin-alternating valve is the industry standard for 24/7 soft water delivery. It's reliable, programmable, and backed by an extensive parts network. We pair it with 10% crosslink resin and Vortech tanks because that combination delivers years of trouble-free soft water.
The Industry "Return Policy" Trap
+
Most online water treatment retailers offer a "return policy" that requires you to ship the entire system back at your expense, including two heavy wet mineral tanks full of resin and a salt tank. After paying $300+ in return shipping, you often discover a 15-25% restocking fee on top. It's designed to make returns impractical. And for something as essential as your home's water quality, you shouldn't have to gamble.
How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
It Doesn't Fix the Hard Water
If your water test still shows hard water after installation, that's on us. The twin tank system should eliminate hardness around the clock.
2
You Call Us, We Fix It
We troubleshoot with you: water test results, valve settings, installation review, flow rates. Most issues are resolved with a simple programming adjustment or plumbing correction.
Full Refund, No Hassle
If we can't resolve the issue, you get a full refund. We handle the logistics. You don't ship anything back. That's the difference between a real guarantee and a return policy.
The 9100SXT twin tank is for anyone who needs soft water around the clock, even while a tank regenerates. Two tanks, one always working. Most homes do fine with a single tank, and I'll tell you which one fits your water.
