Installation takes 30 to 60 minutes for most homeowners. Basic plumbing skills and a pipe wrench are all you need. The 1" Standard Rusco is the easiest sediment filter to install because it threads directly into existing 1" lines.
1Turn off the pump and relieve pressure: Switch off the well pump at the breaker. Open a faucet to drain residual pressure from the line.
2Cut into the line: Cut the pipe and add shutoff valves on both sides of the filter (and a bypass loop if you want zero downtime when you swap screens). The 1" FNPT housing accepts 1" male threaded fittings on both ends.
3Mount with the sump pointing down: The flush valve must be at the bottom for gravity to do its job. Leave at least 4" of clearance below the sump for screen removal.
4Use Teflon tape on threads: Wrap 2 to 3 turns of Teflon tape on each male thread. Hand-tighten plus 1 to 2 turns with a wrench. Do not over-tighten the plastic body.
5Plumb the flush line (optional): Connect a hose or PVC line from the 1/2" flush valve to a drain or outdoor discharge. Or just put a bucket under it when flushing.
6Pressure up and check for leaks: Turn the pump back on slowly. Inspect every joint. Open the flush valve briefly to clear any installation debris.
Where to install: Most often this filter goes after the water softener to catch any softener resin that escapes through a worn distributor, or as a final polish before a UV system. It can also be used as a sediment pre-filter on smaller wells. See the complete sediment filter guide →
When to size up: If you have 3+ bathrooms, run sprinkler zones off the well, or have heavy sediment water that requires frequent flushing, the Large 2" Rusco handles 4x the flow rate (up to 100 GPM) with the same simple flush operation.
Flush the Sump When sediment is visible
Watch the clear sump. When you see sediment building up at the bottom (anywhere from once a week to once a month depending on your water), open the 1/2" ball valve at the base of the sump for about 5 to 10 seconds. Household water pressure flushes the trapped sediment out into a bucket or drain line. Close the valve when the discharge runs clear. No tools, no shutoffs, no parts to replace. The whole flush takes under a minute.
Annual Screen Inspection Once a year
Once a year, shut off the inlet valve, depressurize, unscrew the clear sump, pull out the polyester screen, and rinse it under tap water. If you see staining, scaling, or any wear, swap in a fresh screen ($15 to $25 depending on mesh size). Re-grease the O-ring with food-grade silicone, reassemble, and you're done.
When to Switch Mesh Sizes As your water changes
The 100 mesh (~150 micron) screen the filter ships with handles most well water sediment. If you're seeing very fine silt or clay slipping through, step down to a 140 or 200 mesh screen. If the screen clogs in days with heavy sand or scale, step up to a 60 or 24 mesh. Stainless steel screens are available for harsh water (high iron, hot water applications).
Annual operating cost: $0 in most years. Replacement screens are $15 to $25 only if you switch mesh sizes or wear one out. Compare that to $25 to $90/yr for cartridge-based filters. The Rusco's clear sump and reusable screen are why it pays for itself within 1 to 2 years.
"This is a great sediment filter. There is no filtration media to replace, simply open the ball valve to flush out the collected sediment. But be careful, because there is a surprising amount of pressure when you open the valve. It is probably best to run a hose from the valve down to your sump. When you look at the screen, it does not appear to be able to filter fine particles, but since this is a spin-down filter, it creates a vortex that allows the sediment to drop out, removing apparently all of the sediment. We do not find sediment particles on the backs of the screens of our faucets. There are also replacement screens that you can buy, with different mesh sizes, to handle whatever sediment you may be dealing with." ★★★★★

Complete Guide to Well Water Filtration Systems
Standard 1" Rusco Spin-Down: Reusable Screen, Clear Sump, 30-Second Flush
NSF certified, 1 to 25 GPM, 150 PSI. The simplest sediment filter you can install on a well.
The Standard 1" Rusco Spin-Down is a reusable-screen sediment filter built for smaller wells (1 to 2 bathrooms, 1 to 3 occupants), post-softener resin traps, and as a final polish before a UV system. The 1" FNPT housing threads directly into existing 1" plumbing with no PVC work. Inside, water hits a vortex deflector and spins so sediment drops into the clear sump while filtered water exits the outlet at 1 to 25 GPM with minimal pressure drop.
When you can see sediment in the clear sump, open the 1/2" flush ball valve for 5 to 10 seconds. Household water pressure clears the trapped sediment out into a bucket or drain line. No tools, no shutoffs, no cartridges to replace. The 100 mesh (~150 micron) polyester screen is reusable for years, and replacement screens are available in 5 mesh sizes (24 to 200 mesh) plus stainless steel for harsh water.
Genuine Rusco / Vu-Flow housing, NSF/ANSI certified, 150 PSI rated, made in the USA. If you have 3+ bathrooms, sprinklers on the well, or heavy continuous sediment, step up to the Large 2" Rusco for 4x the flow capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Standard 1" Rusco ($145) is right for smaller homes (1 to 2 bathrooms, 1 to 3 occupants), cabins, RVs, and as a post-softener resin trap on residential systems. It threads directly into standard 1" lines with no PVC work. The Large 2" Rusco ($165) handles 4x the flow rate (18 to 100 GPM vs 1 to 25 GPM) and is the right choice for 3+ bath homes, sprinkler systems on the well, agricultural use, or any whole-house pre-filter where flow matters. The Large uses 2" slip PVC connections (typically reduced to 1.5" or 1.25" for residential).
Three common scenarios. (1) After your water softener, to catch any resin that escapes through a worn distributor before it reaches your faucets and water heater. (2) Before a UV system, as a final polish so no particle shadows the lamp. (3) As a sediment pre-filter on a smaller well that gets occasional sand or scale. If you have heavy continuous sediment, a 20" Big Blue cartridge filter or a backwashing sediment filter usually does a better job for the price.
The filter ships with 100 mesh (~150 micron) polyester, which catches sand, grit, scale, and softener resin escapes. That covers most well water uses. If you see fine silt slipping through, step down to 140 mesh (~105 micron) or 200 mesh (~74 micron). If the screen clogs in days because of heavy coarse sediment, step up to 60 mesh (~250 micron) or 24 mesh (~705 micron) to catch only the big stuff. Stainless steel screens are available for hot water or high-iron applications.
Look at the clear sump. When you can see a layer of sediment building up at the bottom, open the 1/2" flush valve for 5 to 10 seconds. Most homes flush once a week to once a month. If you find yourself flushing daily, you have heavy sediment and either need a coarser mesh or should add a larger pre-filter (like the Large 2" Rusco or a 20" Big Blue) upstream.
Yes. This is one of the most common reasons we sell it. When a water softener distributor wears out, tiny amber resin beads can sneak past the screen and end up in your faucets, washing machine, and water heater. Putting a Rusco filter on the OUTLET of the softener traps those beads in the clear sump where you can see them, instead of letting them clog appliances downstream.
Yes. Water flows IN through one port, hits a vortex deflector, spins down (centrifugal action), and the sediment drops into the clear sump. Filtered water rises through the polyester screen and exits the OUT port. The housing is marked with arrows showing the correct flow direction. Mount it with the sump pointing straight down so gravity helps the sediment settle and so you can flush it.
A clean Rusco screen causes minimal pressure drop, typically 1 to 2 PSI at normal household flow rates. As sediment loads on the screen, the pressure drop increases. The clear sump lets you see when it is time to flush before pressure drop becomes noticeable at the faucet. The 1" Standard is rated for 1 to 25 GPM. If your peak whole-house demand exceeds 20 GPM consistently, the Large 2" handles that flow with less drop.
Yes. Rusco housings carry a manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. In addition, every order from Mid Atlantic Water comes with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and free lifetime tech support. $145 Buys You a Filter That Doesn't Need Cartridges
Reusable polyester screen, clear sump, 30-second flush. Pays for itself in year one.
What you give up with a $40 cartridge filter
Generic cartridge filters are cheap up front but expensive over time. Plan on $25 to $90 per year in replacement cartridges, plus the hassle of shutting off water, depressurizing, unscrewing the sump, and dropping in a new cartridge every 2 to 6 months.
Cheap housings also lack pressure relief, lack NSF certification, and use proprietary cartridge sizes that lock you into one supplier. The Rusco housing is NSF certified, 150 PSI rated, and the polyester screen is reusable for years. You see exactly what is happening inside the clear sump.

Year 1 the Rusco costs ~$100 more than a generic cartridge filter. By year 3 the cartridge filter has cost you $115 to $310 in replacements while the Rusco has cost you $0. The Rusco is also the only filter where you can actually see what your water is doing through the clear sump.
Why Rusco / Vu-Flow?

After 32 years of installing and selling water treatment systems, we still recommend the Rusco Spin-Down to homeowners who want a sediment filter that does not need monthly cartridge changes. It's the same filter we use after softeners and before UV lights in our own installations.
The "Cheap Cartridge" Trap
+
Generic cartridge filters look cheap until you tally up the cost. Most homes burn through 4 to 6 cartridges a year ($25 to $90), plus the hassle of shutting off water and unscrewing a heavy sump every time. Many cheap housings also lack NSF certification or pressure relief, and they crack at well water pressure. The Rusco's reusable polyester screen and 150 PSI housing avoid all of that.
