The Clack WS1 is the valve you will find on most Clack-branded residential water softeners. It is an electronic demand-metered valve, which means it tracks your actual water usage and regenerates (backwashes) only when necessary. This is the most efficient approach compared to timer-based systems that regenerate on a fixed schedule whether you need it or not.

The 27 GPM max flow rate is worth noting. That is higher than most residential softener valves, which means the WS1 can handle larger homes without creating pressure drop issues. For a family of four in a home with two or three bathrooms, this valve has plenty of capacity. The demand metering system works by measuring how many gallons of water pass through the valve. Once a set number of gallons have been used (based on your hardness level and tank capacity), the valve triggers a regeneration cycle. This typically happens during the early morning hours, around 2:00 AM by default, so it does not interrupt your water usage during the day.

The day override is an important feature. Even if you have not used enough water to trigger regeneration based on gallons, the valve will force a regeneration cycle after a set number of days (adjustable from 1 to 28) to prevent the resin bed from fouling. Clack does not sell complete water softener systems directly to consumers. They manufacture the valve (the WS1) and tanks, then dealers and OEMs build complete systems using Clack components. This means when you see a "Clack water softener" for sale online, it was assembled by a dealer using genuine Clack parts. The quality of the final system depends on both the Clack valve and the quality of the resin, tank, and assembly by the dealer.

Sizing Tip

Do not undersize your water softener to save money. An undersized softener regenerates more frequently, which wastes salt and water and shortens the life of the resin bed. A properly sized softener should regenerate every 4-7 days under normal usage. If your water is very hard (above 20 GPG), go up one size from what you think you need.

Build Quality and Warranty

Clack builds their valves to last. The WS1 uses a linearly reciprocating piston running through a one-piece seal and spacer stack, the same proven architecture family as Fleck valves, and the caps and nuts seal with radial O-rings so they only need to be hand tightened. The electronics are straightforward, and the LCD display is easy to read. Parts are widely available through water treatment suppliers, which matters when you need a repair ten years down the road.

The standard Clack WS1 warranty covers:

Clack WS1 Owner's Manual: Key Settings Explained

A lot of articles about Clack softeners just say "download the manual" and leave it at that. I would rather walk you through the settings that actually matter. These are the ones you will need to set correctly during initial setup, and the ones you should know how to check if something seems off.

The Five Settings You Need to Get Right

  1. Hardness (H) setting: This is where you enter your water hardness in grains per gallon. The softener uses this number along with the resin volume to calculate how many gallons it can treat before regeneration is needed. If you have iron in your water, add 3-5 GPG to your hardness number for every 1 PPM of iron. So if your hardness is 15 GPG and you have 2 PPM of iron, set it to 21-25 GPG.
  2. Capacity (C) setting: This is the resin volume in your tank, measured in cubic feet. Common values are 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0. The valve multiplies this by the resin exchange rate to determine total grain capacity. Do not guess this number; it should match the amount of resin in your tank.
  3. Regeneration time (RT): The time of day regeneration starts. Default is 2:00 AM. Set it for a time when no one in the house is using water, because during regeneration the softener is offline (unless you have a dual tank system).
  4. Day override (DO): The maximum number of days between regenerations. It can be set anywhere from 1 to 28 days, or turned off entirely so regeneration is based purely on gallons. For most households, 7-10 days is a good setting. If you are on vacation frequently or live alone, you might set this higher.

How to Access the Programming Mode

On the WS1, the settings above live in what Clack calls Installer Display Settings. To enter it, press and hold NEXT and the up arrow together for about 3 seconds. The display steps through hardness, day override, and regeneration time. Use the up and down arrows to change values and press NEXT to move to the next parameter; pressing REGEN steps you backward or exits. After the last parameter, the valve returns to normal operation.

The display alternates between showing the current time and the remaining gallons until the next regeneration. If you see the display flashing or showing an error code, the most common cause is a disrupted power supply. Try unplugging the valve for 30 seconds and plugging it back in. Pro Tip: Keep a Record of Your Settings

Write down your WS1 settings and tape them to the side of the tank or brine tank. If the power goes out or the valve gets reset, you will know exactly what to program back in. I have seen too many homeowners scrambling to remember their settings after a power surge.

The valve is the brains of the whole system, and it is worth understanding on its own terms. This section covers the full published specifications, how the WS1 fits into Clack's larger valve family, what wears out and how it gets serviced, and the honest answer to a question I hear constantly: why can't I just buy a bare WS1 online?

Mechanically, the WS1 is a piston valve: a linearly reciprocating piston travels through a one-piece expanding seal and spacer stack to route water through the service, backwash, brine draw, and rinse positions. It is not a rotor-disc valve. Rotor-disc designs show up in budget import valves; the piston-and-seal architecture used by both Clack and Fleck has decades of field history behind it and is far easier to rebuild in place. The low end of the meter range matters more than people realize: the turbine registers flow down to a quarter of a gallon per minute, which is why a running toilet flapper often shows up on the WS1's flow display before the homeowner has noticed anything.

The Clack Valve Family: WS1 vs. WS1.25 vs. WS1.5 vs. WS2

The WS1 is the residential workhorse, but it is one member of a family that shares the same programming logic while scaling up in flow capacity. If a dealer quotes you a "Clack valve," it helps to know which one they mean:

For a typical single-family home, the WS1 is the right valve. The WS1.25 makes sense for very large homes with high simultaneous demand, and the brass-bodied WS1.5 and WS2 are commercial products you would see in restaurants, car washes, and small industrial jobs, not in a basement.

Programming: Two Levels, One Manual

The WS1 has two programming levels, and knowing the difference saves a lot of confusion. The settings a homeowner actually touches (hardness, day override, regeneration time) live in Installer Display Settings, reached by holding NEXT and the up arrow for about 3 seconds; I walk through what each setting should be in the manual settings section above. The deeper OEM system setup level (regeneration cycle times, brine refill, upflow versus downflow regeneration) is reached by holding NEXT and the down arrow for 3 seconds. If nothing happens after that, the assembler locked the valve; the unlock sequence is the down arrow, NEXT, the up arrow, then SET CLOCK, pressed in that order. Be careful in the OEM level: those values were chosen to match the media, tank, and injector on your specific system, and changing them on a guess causes real problems. To force a manual regeneration at any time, hold REGEN for 3 seconds.

The official installation and programming manual is Clack form V3115, downloadable as a PDF directly from Clack's website. It covers both the WS1 and WS1.25 and includes the full settings tables, injector charts, and troubleshooting flowcharts. Print it and keep it with the system.

Parts and Field Service

The WS1 was clearly designed by people who expected it to be serviced rather than thrown away. The parts that actually wear over the years are the main piston, the regenerant piston, the seal and spacer stack they travel through, and the brine injector with its screen. Because the valve uses radial O-ring seals, the caps and nuts only need to be hand tight, and the whole drive assembly comes apart with little more than a small screwdriver. There is no need to sweat fittings or pull the valve off the tank for a routine rebuild.

Parts are also the one place Clack's sales restrictions do not apply: replacement pistons, seal and spacer kits, injectors, motors, and circuit boards are widely available from online parts suppliers. A WS1 that is 15 years old can usually be brought back to factory condition in an afternoon for well under the cost of a new valve, which is a big part of why professionals keep specifying it.

Why You Cannot Buy a Bare WS1 Online

If you have shopped for a WS1 by itself, you have discovered that nobody reputable will sell you one. That is not a supply problem. In April 2010, Clack sent its OEM customers a directive (the "Control Valve Marketing and Internet Up-Date") requiring that systems built on Clack control valves be sold and serviced through traditional professional water treatment channels. In practice, that ended internet sales of bare Clack valves. Replacement parts were explicitly allowed to continue selling online, which is why you can buy every internal component of a WS1 but not the valve itself.

Why would a manufacturer turn away sales? Two reasons that make sense to me after decades in this trade. First, a control valve is not really a consumer product on its own. It has to be matched to the tank diameter, media type and volume, injector size, and drain line flow control, and a mismatched valve produces a system that never works right and generates warranty calls Clack has no way to answer. Second, the policy protects the professional dealers who stock parts and stand behind installations, so the person who built your system is still around to service it years later. You can debate the approach, but it is coherent, and it is a big reason the used and gray-market WS1 valves you see on auction sites are worth avoiding: no warranty, unknown history, and no assembler behind them.

What this means for you as a homeowner is simple: you buy the WS1 already built into a complete system by an authorized assembler, either from a local water treatment dealer or from an online company that has the assembler relationship with Clack.   • Backwash strength: The Fleck valves produce a more aggressive backwash, which is better for maintaining the resin bed over time, especially if you have well water with iron or sediment.
  • Serviceability: Fleck valves are slightly easier to work on if you are a DIYer. The piston-and-seal design is simpler to rebuild, and parts are available from more sources. If you are a hands-on homeowner who likes to do your own maintenance, this matters.
  • Flow rate: The Clack WS1 has a higher flow rate than the Fleck 5600SXT (27 vs. 20 GPM), though the Fleck 2510SXT matches it at 27 GPM. For most homes, 20 GPM is more than enough. But if you have a large home with multiple bathrooms running simultaneously, the higher flow rate is a real advantage.
