Before You Start: What You're Installing
A whole house water filter treats every drop of water entering your home, not just one faucet. The tank in the video (and in this guide) is a 2.5 cubic foot non-backwashing Clack carbon filter filled with catalytic carbon, the same grade of media municipal treatment plants use for chlorine and chloramine. But the installation steps below apply to any in-line tank system: carbon filters, salt-free conditioners, and upflow acid neutralizers all plumb in the same way.
The reason this is such a DIY-friendly project comes down to what a non-backwashing tank doesn't have: no drain line, no electrical connection, no control valve to program. Water goes in one side, gets treated, and comes out the other. Inside the tank, the supply water travels down the center riser tube and up through a Vortech distributor plate, which spins the water in a circular motion through the media bed. That upflow motion prevents channeling (water carving a lazy path through the media) and keeps the bed from solidifying, which is what kills the performance of cheaper downflow-only tanks.

Where the Filter Goes: City Water vs Well Water
The rule for all water treatment equipment is the same: catch the water where it enters the house, before it branches off to bathrooms, the kitchen, and the water heater. That's what makes it "whole house."
- City water: Install the filter right after the main shutoff valve where the water line comes into the house, and after the pressure reducing valve if you have one.
- Well water: Install it next to the pressure tank if possible. The pressure tank is where your usable water pressure starts, and keeping the treatment equipment beside it keeps the plumbing runs short.

If you're on well water with multiple treatment stages (sediment, iron, acid neutralizer, softener, UV), the order of those systems matters a great deal. The system arrives before your hardware store run, so here's the list. Every whole house tank we sell has 1-inch connections, and CPVC, PEX, PVC, and copper all work. Buy for whatever pipe your house already has.

Step-by-Step Installation (7 Steps)
Shut Off the Water and Relieve the Pressure
Close your main shutoff valve (next to the well pressure tank, or at the meter side of the house on city water). Then open a cold water faucet somewhere in the house and let it run until the water stops. That drains the line and relieves all the pressure so you're not cutting into a live pipe.
Place the Tank
Set the tank where you want it: level floor, close to the main line, with a little room around it to work. The tank is light until it's full of water, so now is the time to get the position right.
Cut Out a Section of Pipe
Cut a section out of your main line where the filter will tie in. Measure twice: you're creating two open ends, one that will feed the filter's inlet and one that will receive the treated water back.
Plumb the Inlet to the Upflow Side
Run the supply line into the upflow side of the unit (also called the riser side; on the tank in the video it's the left port). Water travels down the center tube and up through the Vortech plate, which moves it in a circular direction through the media and prevents channeling and solidification of the media bed. Getting inlet and outlet backwards is the single most common installation mistake, so double-check the flow arrows on the tank head.
Plumb the Outlet Back to the House Line
Come out of the downflow side and run the line back to your main house line. Dry-fit everything first, then glue all your CPVC fittings (or crimp every PEX connection). Wrap the threaded adapters with Teflon tape or pipe dope before they go into the tank head.
Let the Glue Cure, Then Fill Slowly
Once the glue has set up and dried, open a cold water faucet in the house. Then open your feed valve only about a quarter of the way and let the tank start to fill. It may take a few minutes. Filling slowly protects the media bed and your plumbing from a pressure slam.
Bring to Full Pressure and Rinse
When water flows steadily from the open faucet, slowly bring the feed valve to full pressure and let the system rinse for 5 to 10 minutes. Check every joint for drips now, and keep an eye on the fittings over the next few days. A slow seep that shows up on day two is much easier to fix than a flood you never checked for.
Black Water at Startup? That's Carbon Dust
Don't Get Alarmed: The First Water Will Look Black
New carbon media sheds fine black dust the first time water moves through it. During the initial rinse the water can look genuinely black. This is normal, it's harmless, and it clears up. Just keep running water until it's clear. If a little gray or black dust reappears a few days later, run a faucet for a few minutes and it will clear again.
This catches a lot of first-time owners off guard, and it generates more worried phone calls than any other part of a carbon filter installation. The dust is just carbon fines from shipping vibration, the same material that's treating your water, in powder form. It is not a defect and it does not mean the media is escaping the tank. Backwashing Filters and Softeners: What Changes
People ask what's different if they're installing a backwashing system, or adding a water softener next to the carbon filter. The plumbing is the same (inlet and outlet), but the valve on top is completely different: an electronic, programmable control valve instead of a simple in/out head. That adds two requirements:

The drain line is the part to plan before you buy. You need somewhere for the discharge to go: a washing machine drain, laundry tub, sump, or a standpipe with a P-trap. The backwash happens automatically (typically at 2 AM), so once it's set up you never think about it. It's all automatic: program it once using the buttons on the screen and it does everything on its own.

How Long the Install Takes
Realistic Timelines
Licensed plumber: 1 to 2 hours for a single non-backwashing tank, if he's efficient and knows what he's doing.
DIY: 2 to 4 hours, mostly because you should let the glue set up and dry properly before pressurizing.

The actual plumbing is a small fraction of that time. Most of a careful DIY install is measuring, dry-fitting, waiting on glue, and the slow fill at the end. Rushing any of those three is how leaks happen.
Common Installation Mistakes
- Reversing the inlet and outlet. The supply must enter the upflow (riser) side. Backwards flow pushes water down through the media without the Vortech distribution, and performance drops noticeably.
- Cutting the pipe before relieving pressure. Shut the valve AND open a faucet until the water stops. A pressurized line will soak you and the floor.
- Pressurizing before the glue cures. CPVC and PVC cement needs time to set. Check the can for cure times at your pipe size and temperature; when in doubt, give it longer.
- Opening the feed valve all at once. A sudden slam of full house pressure into an empty tank can disturb the media bed. Quarter of the way first, faucet open, then full pressure slowly.
- Panicking at black water. Carbon dust at startup is normal. Rinse until clear instead of tearing the plumbing back apart looking for a problem.
- Skipping thread sealant. The 1-inch male adapters into the tank head need Teflon tape or pipe dope. Hand-tight bare threads will weep.
When to Call a Plumber
If you're worried you can't do it, call a plumber. That's not a failure; it's the right call for plenty of homeowners. Specifically, hire it out if:
- Your house has soldered copper and you're not comfortable with SharkBite fittings or a torch
- The main line is in a crawlspace or somewhere you can't work comfortably and safely
- You've never done any plumbing and don't want your first project to be on the main water line
- Local code requires a licensed plumber for main-line work (some jurisdictions do)
