No electricity. No drain line. No programming. This is one of the simplest whole-house water treatment systems to install. Just plumb it inline on your main water line.

Installation Steps

  1. Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
  2. Install a 20" Big Blue sediment filter upstream to protect the carbon media (strongly recommended)
  3. Connect the system inlet to the main water line. Water enters from the bottom of the tank (upflow design)
  4. Connect the outlet to your house plumbing
  5. Open the bypass valve slowly, then switch to service position
  6. Run water for 10 to 15 minutes to flush carbon fines (water will be dark at first, that's normal)

Minimal maintenance, no backwash cycles to manage. The upflow design naturally redistributes the carbon bed during use, reducing channeling and extending media life.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Every 4 to 5 Years Replace Centaur carbon media. The included fill funnel makes adding new carbon straightforward without removing the valve head. Dump old media, rinse the tank, add fresh carbon, and flush for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Every 3 to 6 Months Replace sediment pre-filter cartridge (if using a Big Blue upstream). Frequency depends on sediment levels in your water.
  • Periodic Monitor water quality. If the rotten egg smell, chlorine taste, or odor starts coming back before year 4, your water may have higher contaminant levels. Test and consider replacing media sooner.

Replacement Carbon Media

Pro tip: Always use genuine Centaur catalytic carbon for replacement. Standard coconut shell or wood-based carbon doesn't have the catalytic properties needed for hydrogen sulfide and chloramine removal. Need help with media replacement? Call or text 800-460-5810.

Why Choose a Non-Backwashing Centaur Carbon Filter?

Professional-Grade Carbon Filtration Without the Complexity

This 2.5 cubic foot non-backwashing carbon filter delivers whole-house water treatment without the complexity of backwashing systems. Using Centaur catalytic activated carbon (the same premium media used in municipal water plants) it removes hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, chloramines, PFAS, VOCs, and taste/odor compounds on contact. The upflow design through a Vortech gravel-free tank means no electricity, no drain line, and no wasted water from backwash cycles. Water enters from the bottom, passes up through 2.5 cubic feet of catalytic carbon, and exits clean through the Clack C1190 valve. The Vortech tank eliminates the traditional gravel underbed, making future media replacement significantly easier. Designed for city water and well water. Handles flow rates up to 15 GPM, enough for most 3 to 5 bathroom homes. Pair it with a water softener for comprehensive treatment, or use it standalone for chlorine, odor, and chemical removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), chlorine, chloramines, PFAS, VOCs, and general taste/odor issues. Centaur catalytic carbon doesn't just trap contaminants like standard carbon. It catalytically breaks them down on the surface of the pores. That's why it handles chloramines and H2S that regular activated carbon can't touch.

A backwashing filter periodically reverses water flow to flush sediment and redistribute the media. It needs a drain line and an electrical outlet. This non-backwashing filter uses an upflow design where water enters from the bottom and naturally lifts the carbon bed during use. No drain, no electricity, no wasted water. For city water or clean well water, non-backwashing is simpler and just as effective.

4 to 5 years under normal use. The 2.5 cubic foot capacity gives you significantly more contact time than smaller 1.0 or 1.5 CF systems, which means better removal and longer media life. When it's time to replace, you can order replacement Centaur carbon from us and use the included fill funnel to add it without removing the valve.

No to both. The Clack C1190 is a non-electric, non-backwashing valve. There's nothing to plug in, no timers to set, and no drain connection needed. You just plumb it inline on your main water line.

Yes. This is one of the most DIY-friendly whole-house systems you can buy. No electrical work, no drain plumbing. Connect the inlet, connect the outlet, flush for 10 to 15 minutes. Most homeowners finish in under two hours. If you get stuck, call or text 800-460-5810 and we'll walk you through it.

If you have hard water, yes. Carbon handles chemicals and odors. Softeners handle hardness minerals. Install the carbon filter first, then the softener after it. We sell this as a pre-configured package in our Carbon Filter & Water Softener Packages section.

Centaur is made by Calgon Carbon from bituminous coal using a patented catalytic process. Standard coconut shell carbon only works through adsorption, trapping contaminants on its surface. Centaur has catalytic properties that actively decompose hydrogen sulfide and chloramines through chemical reactions. It's the same grade of carbon used in municipal water treatment plants.

A Vortech tank is a gravel-free mineral tank. Traditional tanks need a gravel bed at the bottom to support the filter media. Vortech tanks have an engineered bottom plate that eliminates the gravel entirely. That makes the system lighter, gives you better flow distribution, and makes media replacement much easier when it's time.

Why Professional-Grade Costs More (And Why It's Worth It)

Same components as a $3,500 professional install. Fraction of the price.

What You Get With Budget Carbon Filters

Standard activated carbon filters use coconut shell or wood-based carbon. They handle basic chlorine, but they can't break down chloramines or hydrogen sulfide. The catalytic reaction just isn't there. With 1.0 cubic feet of media in a cheap tank, you get channeling within a year, reduced flow, and media that needs replacing every 2 years.

Most budget filters also ship with no support. When the rotten egg smell comes back, you're on your own.

What Makes This System Different

Centaur catalytic carbon is made by Calgon Carbon using a patented process. It's the same grade used in municipal water treatment plants. It doesn't just trap contaminants through adsorption. It catalytically breaks down hydrogen sulfide and chloramines on contact. That's the difference.

The Vortech tank eliminates the gravel bed, so media replacement takes an hour instead of half a day. The Clack C1190 valve is NSF certified and has no electronics to fail. And you get 7-day-a-week support from someone who actually installs these systems.

Backed by 29+ Years of Real-World Experience

If this carbon filter system fails to improve your water quality within 30 days of installation, contact us and we'll work with you to resolve it. Troubleshooting, component replacement, or full refund. No shipping a heavy wet tank back. No restocking fees. No runaround.

10,000+ Systems Installed
455+ Verified Reviews
29+ Success Rate

After 29 years of installing and selling whole-house carbon filtration systems, we know what works and what doesn't. Every component in this system was chosen because it performs reliably in real homes, not because it's the cheapest option on a price sheet.

The Industry "Return Policy" Trap +

Most online water treatment retailers have a 'return policy' that requires you to ship the entire system back at your expense. That means draining a tank full of wet carbon media, packing it, and paying $150 to $200 in shipping. Then they hit you with a 15-25% restocking fee. It's designed to make returns impractical.

How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
It Doesn't Fix Your Water

If the system fails to remove the chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, or taste/odor issues it's designed to eliminate, that's on us.

2
You Call Us, We Fix It

We troubleshoot with you. Water test results, installation photos, flow rates. Most issues are resolved with a quick adjustment.

Full Refund, No Hassle

If we can't resolve the issue, you get a full refund. We handle the logistics. You don't ship anything back. That's the difference between a real guarantee and a return policy.

I designed this system with the same components I use in my own home. Centaur catalytic carbon, Vortech tank, Clack valve. The exact same setup. I stand behind it because I use it every day.
