Whole house sediment filter for well water: Pentek 20" Big Blue housing, 5 micron cartridge, bracket and wrench. For homes with 3 or more people.

Not sure which filter type fits your sediment?I'm the guy in the videos. Sediment is the easiest well problem to diagnose (lift the toilet tank lid) and the easiest to get wrong on filter choice: a cartridge clogs in weeks on coarse sand, and a spin-down screen passes fine silt straight through. Tell me what you're seeing and I'll tell you exactly what fits: the 10 or 20 inch Big Blue, a Rusco spin-down, the backwashing tank, or the spin-down + cartridge combo that saves the most money on a dirty well.
✓ Pentair Pentek 20" Big Blue housing (model 150233): blue polypropylene sump, 1" NPT female ports, red pressure-relief button on the cap
✓ One 5 micron sediment cartridge, 4.5" x 20", melt-blown polypropylene
✓ Wall bracket for the Big Blue housing, with screws
✓ Spanner wrench for the 20" sump
Good to know: the parts can arrive in two boxes. Not included: pipe fittings, shut-off valves, thread tape and wall anchors (your plumber supplies them). No printed instructions come in the box; the sediment filter install guide covers each step, and Aidan answers your plumber's questions by phone. Ships free to the lower 48 states.
Replacement cartridge: our 20" Big Blue 5 micron cartridge is $55. Any standard 4.5" x 20" Big Blue cartridge fits the housing; Aidan recommends staying at 5 micron.

We recommend a licensed plumber. A plumber typically installs a Big Blue in 1 to 2 hours, and Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. What your plumber does:
1Shut off and relieve pressure: turn the well pump off at the breaker and open a faucet to drain the pressure from the line.
2Mount the bracket: on the wall after the pressure tank, with room below the housing to lower the sump at cartridge changes (Pentek: at least 1-1/2").
3Cut into the main line: after the pressure tank, with a shut-off valve on each side of the filter so cartridge changes do not need the whole house shut down.
4Connect the 1" NPT ports: with thread tape, the IN port facing the incoming water from the pressure tank. On 3/4" plumbing, reducing bushings adapt the 1" ports.
5Turn on and check: turn the water on slowly, press the red relief button to let the air out, run water for about 5 minutes and check every joint for drips.
Where it goes: well pump → pressure tank → this Big Blue → the treatment tanks. Nothing goes between the pump and the pressure tank. With both an acid neutralizer and an iron filter, Aidan sets their order from your water test. A spin-down screen, if you add one, goes after the treatment tanks. See the install guide →

Cartridge Change About every 4 to 6 months
Turn off the water at the shut-off valves and press the red relief button to let the pressure off. Unscrew the sump with the spanner wrench and remove the old cartridge. Rinse the sump, wipe the O-ring and coat it lightly with clean silicone grease (never vegetable oil). Set the new cartridge over the standpipe in the cap and hand-tighten the sump; do not over-tighten. Turn the water on slowly, press the relief button to let the air out, and run water for about 5 minutes.
When to Change It Sooner Watch for it
Lower water flow at the taps means the cartridge is loaded; dirt in the toilet tank means sediment is getting past. On a clean well a cartridge can go 12 months, on a dirty one every other month. If you are changing it more often than that, call Aidan: a spin-down screen or a backwashing sediment tank may fit your well better. Aidan recommends replacing the cartridge rather than washing it, and staying at 5 micron.
The Housing At each change
Check the O-ring for cracks or flat spots and replace it if it is damaged. Pentek recommends replacing the plastic sump every 10 years.
Cartridge cost: our 20" Big Blue 5 micron cartridge is $55; Aidan says a 5 micron cartridge bought locally averages about $25. At 2 or 3 changes a year, plan on about $110 to $165 a year with ours.

Complete Guide to Well Water Filtration Systems
Professional Sediment Protection for Your Entire Home
Pentek 150233 Big Blue housing: 15 GPM rated, 1" NPT ports, NSF/ANSI 42 for material and structural integrity.
The 20" Big Blue sediment filter kit is the first filter after the pressure tank on a well. It catches sand, silt, rust flakes and other particles down to 5 microns before they reach the acid neutralizer, iron filter, softener or UV system behind it, so their valves and media last. Nothing goes between the pump and the pressure tank.
The kit is a Pentair Pentek Big Blue housing (model 150233) with 1" NPT ports and a red pressure-relief button, one 5 micron melt-blown polypropylene cartridge, a wall bracket with screws, and the spanner wrench; the parts can arrive in two boxes. Aidan recommends the 20 inch for 3 or more people because it does not slow your flow and its cartridge holds more dirt; for 1 or 2 people the 10 inch kit is enough. Change the cartridge about every 4 to 6 months on a typical well ($55 for ours). No drain and no electricity. We recommend a licensed plumber, and Aidan supports your plumber by phone.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Pentek Big Blue housing lasts for years; Pentek recommends replacing the plastic sump every 10 years. The 5 micron cartridge needs changing about every 4 to 6 months on a typical well, up to 12 months on a clean well and every other month on a dirty one. Lower water flow at the taps means it is due. If you are changing it more often than every other month, call Aidan before buying more cartridges: a spin-down screen or a backwashing sediment tank may be the better fix.
The 20 inch Big Blue housing is about 23 inches tall and 7.5 inches across, with 1 inch NPT ports, and takes standard 4.5 x 20 inch cartridges. Leave room below it to lower the sump at cartridge changes. The 20 inch cartridge is twice the length of the 10 inch, so it holds more dirt between changes. For 1 or 2 people, the 10 inch Big Blue kit ($165) is enough; for 3 or more people, this 20 inch kit.
About every 4 to 6 months on a typical well. It depends on how much sediment your well makes: on a clean well a cartridge can go 12 months, on a dirty one every other month. The sign is a drop in water flow at the taps. Our 5 micron 20 inch replacement cartridge is $55; Aidan says a 5 micron cartridge bought locally averages about $25.
5 micron, the cartridge that comes in the kit. Aidan uses 5 micron melt-blown cartridges in every Big Blue: it catches sand, silt and rust without slowing your flow. He does not recommend moving to a 20 or 50 micron cartridge to make it last longer, because the finer sediment then goes on to your treatment tanks. If a 5 micron cartridge clogs within weeks, call Aidan: a spin-down screen or a backwashing sediment tank handles a heavy load better. Our micron ratings guide explains the choice.
No. Aidan recommends replacing the cartridge when it becomes dirty rather than washing and reusing it. If you are going through cartridges quickly, a reusable spin-down screen or a backwashing sediment tank may fit your well better; call or text Aidan and he will tell you which.
On the main line right after the pressure tank, before any treatment tank: well pump, pressure tank, this Big Blue, then the treatment tanks. Nothing goes between the pump and the pressure tank. With both an acid neutralizer and an iron filter, Aidan sets their order from your water test. If you also use a spin-down screen, it goes after the treatment tanks to catch any media they let past. The Big Blue goes first because sand and grit wear valve seals and foul the media in every tank behind it.
The 20 inch cartridge is twice the length of the 10 inch, so it holds more dirt between changes, and the housing does not slow your flow. Aidan's rule: for 1 or 2 people, the 10 inch Big Blue ($165) is enough; for 3 or more people, get the 20 inch. Both have 1 inch ports, the same 4.5 inch cartridge diameter, and a 5 micron cartridge in the kit.
Very little when the cartridge is clean: Pentek rates the empty 1 inch housing at a 1 PSI drop at 15 GPM, and Aidan picks the 20 inch because it does not slow your flow. As the cartridge loads with sediment the drop grows, and lower flow at the taps is the sign to change it. Shut-off valves on both sides of the filter make the change quick.

20" Big Blue Sediment ...$195.00
The Cheapest Insurance for Your Water Treatment System
A $195 sediment filter protects thousands of dollars in downstream equipment.
What happens without a sediment filter?
Sand and sediment will destroy the valve seals on your water softener ($300+ to replace), clog iron filter media ($500+ to re-bed), coat UV quartz sleeves (reducing disinfection effectiveness), and accelerate wear on every piece of equipment in the chain. A single valve repair costs more than this entire filter kit.
Cheap no-name filter housings crack under pressure, lack NSF certification, and use proprietary cartridge sizes that are hard to find and overpriced. The Pentair Pentek housing takes standard 4.5" x 20" Big Blue cartridges, and Pentek recommends replacing its sump every 10 years.

About $0.84 / Day (Year 1, 2 Cartridges)
The Big Blue sediment filter kit is $195, and our 5 micron replacement cartridge is $55; at a change about every 4 to 6 months, that is 2 or 3 cartridges a year. Compare that to a single water softener valve repair ($300+), an iron filter re-bed ($500+), or a cracked UV quartz sleeve ($60+). This filter pays for itself the first time it prevents a downstream equipment failure.
Why Pentair Pentek?
The Pentair Pentek Big Blue housing (model 150233) has 1" NPT ports, a 90 PSI rating and a red pressure-relief button that lets the pressure off before a filter change. The housing is tested and certified by NSF to NSF/ANSI 42 for material and structural integrity. It accepts any standard 4.5" x 20" Big Blue cartridge from any manufacturer, so you are never locked into proprietary replacements.

After 32 years in water treatment, we know that a quality sediment filter is the foundation of every well water system. We chose the Pentair Pentek Big Blue housing because it is the housing plumbers have trusted for decades: reliable, durable, and universally compatible with affordable replacement cartridges.
The "Cheap Housing" Trap
+
Generic filter housings from Amazon and big box stores often use thin plastic that cracks under normal well water pressure, lack pressure relief buttons (making filter changes messy and potentially dangerous), and require proprietary cartridge sizes that cost 2–3× more than standard Big Blue cartridges. A housing failure means water all over your basement and no filtration until you replace it.
