Most homeowners install this filter in under 1 hour. Basic plumbing skills and a pipe wrench are all you need. The 10" housing’s shorter footprint makes it ideal for tight basement, crawl space, or utility room installations.
1Turn off the pump and relieve pressure: Switch off the well pump at the breaker. Open a faucet to drain residual pressure from the line.
2Mount the bracket: Secure the heavy-duty steel bracket to the wall using the included hardware. Choose a spot after the pressure tank with at least 6" of clearance below the housing for sump removal.
3Cut into the main line: Cut the pipe after the pressure tank and install shutoff valves on both sides of the filter for easy isolation during cartridge changes.
4Connect the plumbing: Thread the 1" NPT connections into the housing head. Use Teflon tape on all threaded joints. Water flows IN through the right port and OUT through the left port (marked on the housing cap).
5Turn on and check for leaks: Turn the pump back on slowly. Press the pressure relief button to bleed air from the housing. Inspect all connections for drips.
Correct installation order: Well → Pressure Tank → Sediment Filter (this unit) → Iron Filter → Acid Neutralizer → Water Softener → UV System. The sediment filter must be first in line to protect all downstream equipment. See the complete guide →
When to size up: If you have 3+ bathrooms, heavy sediment, or a sprinkler system on the well, the 20" Big Blue kit doubles the cartridge surface area and lasts twice as long between changes.
Cartridge Replacement Every 2 to 6 months
Press the pressure relief button on the housing cap to depressurize. Use the included filter wrench to unscrew the sump. Remove the old cartridge and drop in a new one. Re-tighten the sump hand-tight, then a quarter turn with the wrench. Open the water and press the relief button again to bleed air. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. Plan on more frequent changes than the 20" version since the 10" cartridge holds roughly half the sediment.
Housing Inspection During each cartridge change
When the sump is off, inspect the O-ring on the housing head for cracks or flat spots. Apply a thin coat of food-grade silicone lubricant to the O-ring to maintain a good seal. Check the sump interior for any buildup or discoloration.
Pressure Drop Monitoring Ongoing
If you notice reduced water pressure in the house, the cartridge is likely loaded with sediment and needs changing sooner. Heavy sediment wells may need monthly changes with a 10" housing. If you find yourself replacing cartridges more than once a month, step up to the 20" kit or add a spin-down pre-filter upstream.
Replacement cost: Standard 5-micron 10" Big Blue cartridges cost $8 to $15 each. At 3 to 6 changes per year, your annual filter cost is roughly $25 to $90, a fraction of the cost of repairing or replacing the downstream equipment this filter protects.

Complete Guide to Well Water Filtration Systems
Compact Sediment Protection for Smaller Well Water Systems
Pentek Big Blue housing with 15 GPM flow rate, 1" NPT connections, and NSF/ANSI 42 certification.
The 10" Big Blue sediment filter kit is the first line of defense for any well water treatment system in a smaller home (1 to 2 bathrooms, 1 to 2 people). Installed after your pressure tank and before all downstream equipment (iron filters, acid neutralizers, water softeners, UV systems), it catches sand, silt, rust, and sediment particles down to 5 microns. That protects expensive treatment media and extends the life of every system in the chain.
This kit uses a genuine Pentair Pentek Big Blue housing (model 150237) with 1" NPT connections and a built-in pressure relief button for safe, easy filter changes. The included 5-micron polyspun cartridge handles flow rates up to 15 GPM at just 1 PSI of pressure drop. We include everything you need for installation: the housing, a pre-installed cartridge, a heavy-duty steel mounting bracket with hardware, and a filter wrench. Made in the USA. NSF/ANSI Standard 42 certified.
If you have 3+ bathrooms, heavy sediment, or a sprinkler system on your well, step up to the 20" Big Blue kit for double the cartridge surface area and longer time between changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
The 10" Big Blue is the right choice for smaller homes (1 to 2 people, 1 to 2 bathrooms) on a well with low to moderate sediment. It costs $30 less than the 20" kit and takes up half the wall space, which makes it ideal for tight utility rooms or basements. The trade-off is more frequent cartridge changes (every 2 to 4 months under heavy use) since the 10" cartridge holds roughly half the sediment of a 20" cartridge. If you have 3+ bathrooms, heavy sediment, or a sprinkler system on the well, step up to the 20" Big Blue kit ($195).
The Pentair Pentek Big Blue housing itself lasts about 10 years under normal use. The 5-micron cartridge inside needs replacing every 2 to 6 months for the 10" version, depending on your water's sediment load. If you notice reduced water pressure, the cartridge is full and needs changing sooner. Heavy-sediment wells may need monthly cartridge changes. In those cases, consider adding a spin-down pre-filter upstream or stepping up to the 20" Big Blue.
The Pentek 150237 housing measures 13.30" tall by 7.45" wide. Plan on at least 6" of clearance below the housing for sump removal during cartridge changes, so the total wall space needed is roughly 20" tall. The wall mounting bracket adds about 2" to the depth. The cartridge inside is the standard 4.5" x 10" Big Blue size.
For the 10" Big Blue with a 5-micron cartridge, plan on changes every 2 to 6 months. The exact interval depends on how much sediment is in your well water. Signs it is time to change: reduced water pressure, visible discoloration when you remove the cartridge, or a pressure gauge reading showing more than a 5 PSI drop across the housing. At $8 to $15 per cartridge, it is the cheapest protection for your downstream treatment equipment.
The included 5-micron cartridge is the most common choice for well water. It catches sand, silt, rust, and fine sediment without restricting flow. If your water has very fine particulates (like clay), you may want a 1-micron cartridge, but it will clog faster. If you have heavy coarse sediment, start with a 20 or 50-micron cartridge and use the 5-micron as a second stage. The housing accepts any standard 4.5" x 10" Big Blue cartridge.
Standard polyspun cartridges are not washable. Once loaded with sediment, they need to be replaced. However, you can buy pleated cartridges for this housing that are washable and reusable. Pleated filters have more surface area and can be rinsed clean with a garden hose. They cost more upfront ($15 to $25 for the 10" size) but last longer between changes. For heavy-sediment wells on a 10" housing, a pleated washable cartridge can be a good upgrade.
After the pressure tank and before everything else. The correct order is: well pump, pressure tank, sediment filter, iron filter, acid neutralizer, water softener, UV system. The sediment filter is always first in the treatment chain because it protects every piece of equipment downstream. Sand and grit will damage valve seals, clog filter media, coat UV quartz sleeves, and shorten the life of every system it reaches.
A clean sediment filter causes minimal pressure drop, typically 1 to 2 PSI on the 10" Big Blue at normal household flow rates. As the cartridge loads with sediment over time, the pressure drop increases. When you notice reduced flow at your faucets, it is time to change the cartridge. Installing shutoff valves on both sides of the filter makes it easy to isolate and change the cartridge quickly. If you constantly run multiple high-flow fixtures (showers + dishwasher + sprinkler), the 20" Big Blue handles those flow rates with less pressure drop.
10" Big Blue Sediment ...$165.00
The Cheapest Insurance for Your Water Treatment System
A $165 sediment filter protects thousands of dollars in downstream equipment.
What happens without a sediment filter?
Sand and sediment will destroy the valve seals on your water softener ($300+ to replace), clog iron filter media ($500+ to re-bed), coat UV quartz sleeves (reducing disinfection effectiveness), and accelerate wear on every piece of equipment in the chain. A single valve repair costs more than this entire filter kit.
Cheap no-name filter housings crack under pressure, lack NSF certification, and use proprietary cartridge sizes that are hard to find and overpriced. The Pentair Pentek housing is the industry standard for a reason. It is built to last 10+ years with widely available, affordable replacement cartridges.

The 10" Big Blue sediment filter kit costs $165 upfront with $25 to $90 per year in replacement cartridges. Compare that to a single water softener valve repair ($300+), an iron filter re-bed ($500+), or a cracked UV quartz sleeve ($60+). This filter pays for itself the first time it prevents a downstream equipment failure.

After 32 years of installing and selling water treatment systems, we know that a quality sediment filter is the foundation of every well water system. We chose the Pentair Pentek Big Blue housing because it's what we use in our own installations: reliable, durable, and universally compatible with affordable replacement cartridges.
The "Cheap Housing" Trap
+
Generic filter housings from Amazon and big box stores often use thin plastic that cracks under normal well water pressure, lack pressure relief buttons (making filter changes messy and potentially dangerous), and require proprietary cartridge sizes that cost 2 to 3x more than standard Big Blue cartridges. A housing failure means water all over your basement and no filtration until you replace it.
