Most homeowners complete both systems in 3-5 hours. The acid neutralizer needs no electricity or drain -- just plumb it in. The softener needs a 120V outlet and a drain line.

Correct Installation Order (This Matters)

Well / Pressure Tank Sediment Filter Acid Neutralizer Water Softener House
⚠️ Order matters: The acid neutralizer must come before the water softener. Softeners require a minimum pH of 7.0 -- running acidic water through a softener damages the resin and reduces its lifespan. The neutralizer raises pH to ~7.0 first, then the softener can work effectively.

Step 1 -- Acid Neutralizer

  1. Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
  2. Position the tank and connect inlet/outlet using 3/4" CPVC -- one-step yellow glue works fine
  3. Hand-tighten the valve, then only a quarter to half turn with channel locks -- over-tightening can crack the tank lip
  4. Open the bypass slowly and flush for 5-10 minutes until water runs clear of calcite dust

Step 2 -- Water Softener

  1. Position the softener downstream of the acid neutralizer
  2. Connect inlet and outlet to the main water line -- water direction is marked on the valve head
  3. Run a drain line from the valve to a floor drain, utility sink, or outside (1/2" tubing, max 20')
  4. Plug in to a standard 120V outlet
  5. Add salt to the brine tank -- fill about halfway with water softener salt pellets
  6. Open bypass slowly, fill the tank, then switch to service position
  7. Program the 5600SXT valve: set time of day, water hardness, and tank capacity
  8. Run a manual regeneration cycle to flush the system and seat the resin bed

Two simple routines: Top off calcite in the neutralizer every 12-18 months, and keep salt in the softener's brine tank. That's most of it.

Acid Neutralizer Maintenance

  • Every 12-18 Months Add calcite media. Pour it in through the fillport -- no need to remove the valve. When the media level drops to about two-thirds full, it's time to top off. Lower pH and higher water usage dissolve calcite faster.
  • Annually Test your pH. Confirm the system is maintaining neutral levels (7.0+). If pH drops below 7, add more calcite.

Water Softener Maintenance

  • Monthly Check salt level. Keep the brine tank at least 1/3 full with water softener salt pellets. Avoid rock salt -- it contains impurities that can clog the brine system.
  • Annually Clean the brine tank. Let the salt run low and clean out any salt bridges or mushing that can impair regeneration.
  • Every 10-15 Years Replace the softener resin. Our 10% crosslink resin lasts significantly longer than standard 8%. Signs of worn resin: hard water returning, increased salt usage, or resin beads in water.
  • As Needed Check the venturi and injector. If regeneration seems sluggish, the venturi assembly may need cleaning. Takes 5 minutes with no tools.
Pro tip: The acid neutralizer has no moving parts, no timer, and no programming -- it's virtually maintenance-free beyond adding calcite. The softener handles regeneration automatically via the 5600SXT demand valve. Questions? Call or text 800-460-5810.

Why Pair an Acid Neutralizer With a Water Softener?

The Complete Solution for Acidic, Hard Well Water

Acidic well water corrodes your copper pipes from the inside out, leaches metals into your drinking water, and leaves blue-green stains on your fixtures. An acid neutralizer fixes this by raising your pH to neutral, but it adds calcium to your water in the process, creating hard water. Hard water causes white scale buildup on fixtures and appliances, dry skin and hair, soap that won't lather, and shortened appliance lifespans. A water softener removes those hardness minerals through ion exchange, giving you soft water throughout your home. This package solves both problems in the correct order: the acid neutralizer corrects pH first, then the water softener removes the hardness the neutralizer introduced. Together, they deliver pH-neutral, soft water to every faucet in your home, protecting your plumbing, your appliances, and your quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

The acid neutralizer always goes first. The correct order from your well is: pressure tank > sediment filter (if applicable) > acid neutralizer > water softener. Water softeners require a minimum pH of 7.0 to work properly. Running acidic water through a softener damages the resin and reduces its effectiveness. The acid neutralizer raises your pH to neutral first, then the softener can remove hardness minerals effectively.

No, they solve different problems. An acid neutralizer raises your water's pH by slowly dissolving calcite (calcium carbonate) into the water, correcting acidic conditions that cause blue-green stains and pipe corrosion. A water softener removes hardness minerals (calcium and magnesium) through ion exchange, preventing scale buildup, soap scum, and dry skin. Here's the catch: acid neutralizers add calcium to your water as they raise pH, which increases hardness. That's why you typically need both. The neutralizer fixes the acid, then the softener removes the hardness the neutralizer introduced.

Yes, most of our customers do. The acid neutralizer is the simpler install: no electricity, no drain, just plumb it in with 3/4" CPVC or SharkBite fittings. The water softener needs a standard 120V outlet and a drain line for regeneration. Plan 3-5 hours for both systems. If you hire a plumber, they can call Aidan directly at 800-460-5810 for programming help with the Fleck 5600SXT valve. We walk customers through installation 7 days a week.

Typically every 12-18 months, depending on your water's pH level and household water usage. The lower your pH and the more water you use, the faster the calcite dissolves. You can check the media level through the fillport. When it's down to about two-thirds full, it's time to add more. The fillport makes this easy: just pour in the calcite without removing the valve. We sell calcite in 50 lb bags and as a one-year supply bundle.

The Fleck 5600SXT uses electronic demand regeneration. It counts gallons and only regenerates when the resin is actually exhausted. This saves significantly more salt than timer-based systems. Most households go through a 40 lb bag of salt every 4-8 weeks depending on water hardness and usage. You'll notice the salt level in the brine tank dropping. Just keep it at least a quarter full.

This package handles 2-8 people with 2-5 bathrooms. It's our most popular size for average to large homes. The 2.5 cubic foot acid neutralizer provides enough calcite capacity for higher water usage, and the 48,000 grain softener handles moderate to high hardness levels. If you're not sure this is the right size, call Aidan at 800-460-5810 with your water test results and he'll give you a personalized recommendation.

We recommend a sediment filter upstream of both systems if you have visible particles or sediment in your water. A 20" Big Blue sediment filter installed before the acid neutralizer traps particles that could get into the valve. That said, many of our customers run this package without a separate sediment filter and have no issues. It depends on your water quality.

Both tanks and valves are built for long-term use. The Vortech tanks carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty, and both valves carry 5-year warranties. In practice, the Fleck 5600SXT valve is the most widely used residential softener valve in America. Parts are available everywhere and technicians know how to service it. The 10% crosslink resin in the softener lasts 10-15+ years. The calcite media in the neutralizer dissolves by design (that's how it raises pH) and is refilled periodically. It's an inexpensive, routine maintenance item.

acid neutralizer tank

The tank works well, but it is hard to find fittings to plumb it in. Home depot and lowes in our area did not have the fittings, and I finally found them at a plumbing store located over an hour away. Please send some fitting to hook up to pex or copper, not these garden hose fittings.

Clack 2.5 cubic foot up flow Neutralizer & Fleck 5600STX 48000 grain Water Softener

I had been using an old neutralizer for over 30 years. The water softener broke about 20 years ago. With the new system the water volume has increased dramatically because of the vortex tanks. I had been looking for a long time to upgrade and I am very pleased with the performance of this new system.

Why Our Package Costs More

Professional-Grade Components vs. Budget Alternatives

What You Get With Budget Packages

Budget acid neutralizer and water softener packages typically cut corners where it counts: timer-based regeneration that wastes salt and water, standard 8% crosslink resin that degrades faster, gravel-bedded tanks with lower flow rates, and partial calcite fills that require immediate replenishment.

Worse, many online retailers offer little to no technical support after the sale. When your plumber needs help programming the softener valve or you're not sure how to check the calcite level, you're on your own. Searching forums and watching random YouTube videos.

The Real Cost Comparison

Budget AN + Softener Package
$1,800-2,200
  • Lifespan: Fails in 3-4 years
  • Result: Frequent repairs, poor water quality, leaks
  • Support: None
$0.82-1.00/day (more salt, shorter resin life)

Our Professional Package

  • Lifespan: Lasts 15+ years
  • Result: Done right the first time, peace of mind
  • Support: Lifetime USA Support
$0.55/day (10+ year system life, less salt waste)

When you factor in the premium components (Vortech tanks, 10% crosslink resin, Fleck 5600SXT demand valve), full calcite fill, and unlimited expert support, this package delivers better long-term value than budget alternatives that need more frequent resin replacement, waste more salt, and leave you without help when something needs adjustment.

29+ Success Rate

After 29+ years of selling and supporting water treatment systems, we know what works. This is our most popular acid neutralizer and water softener combination. We've sold thousands of these packages and the customer reviews speak for themselves. We pair proven components (Clack valve, Fleck 5600SXT, Vortech tanks, 10% crosslink resin) because that combination delivers years of trouble-free performance.

The Industry "Return Policy" Trap +

Most online retailers offer a "return policy" that requires you to ship both systems back at your expense. That's 300+ pounds of wet equipment on a pallet. After paying $300+ in return freight, you often discover a 15-25% restocking fee on top. It's designed to make returns impractical. For something as essential as your home's water quality, you shouldn't have to gamble.

How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
It Doesn't Fix the Water

If your water test still shows acidic pH or hard water after installation, that's on us. Both systems should be performing. Period.

2
You Call Us, We Fix It

We troubleshoot with you: water test results, installation order, valve settings, flow rates. Most issues are resolved with a simple adjustment.

Full Refund, No Hassle

If we can't resolve the issue, you get a full refund. We handle the logistics. You don't ship anything back. That's the difference between a real guarantee and a return policy.
