"I have a vortex tank and other brands would flush out of the system during the backwash cycle. This calcite is more dense and stays in the tank." ★★★★★
Richard D., Verified Buyer
"Compared to neighbors with similar well water, calcite is more reliable on holding the Ph around 7 for longer than other products. It might give you pain having white residue on your cookware or appliances, but in my opinion it well worth having that trouble over drinking and showering in acid water." ★★★★★
Sharon G., Verified Buyer
"I am quite happy with this calcite purchase. The price was reasonable and the granularity is more pebble like than powder like, exactly what I was looking for. The color is not pure white but slightly grayish. I will buy it again." ★★★★★
Gregory J., Verified Buyer
"Fair price on calcite, fast shipping. More importantly, Aiden is always there when you need any kind of technical question answered, even on a Sunday afternoon.." ★★★★★

Filling from empty? The 3-box pack ($395), 4-box pack ($495) and 5-box pack ($595) cost less than buying single boxes at $145. Our complete neutralizers already ship with a full fill of calcite, loaded at install.
How long a fill lasts depends on how acidic the water is and how much the house uses: very low pH and heavy use shorten it, and a weekend house goes longer because calcite does not dissolve while no water is moving. The months above are typical, not a schedule. Check the level once a year.
Will it work in my tank?
Any calcite acid neutralizer tank, any brand
Yes. Upflow (non-backwashing) or backwashing, Clack or Fleck valve.
A tank with a gravel bed under the media
Yes. Keep the gravel in the bottom, around the center tube; the calcite goes on top. Our tanks are Vortech tanks and take no gravel.
pH 5.5 or higher in a 2.0 or 2.5 cu ft tank; 6.0 or higher in a 1.0 or 1.5
Plain calcite is enough.
pH below that
Calcite plus FloMag ($225), mixed box by box. See the comparison below.
An iron filter, softener or carbon tank
No. Calcite only raises pH. It does not remove iron, sulfur or manganese, and it does not soften water.
The media is granular, coarser than sand and never a powder, so it stays in the tank: a backwash does not lift a wet bed of 200 to 300 lb. Not sure which tank you have? Text Aidan a photo of it at 443-277-2204.
What ships
✓One 50 lb box of granular calcite, about half a cubic foot of media.
✓A cardboard box, not a printed bag. Calcite used to ship in 50 lb bags, and older videos and reviews still say bags; it is the same 50 lb of calcite, packed to ship.
✓Free shipping to the lower 48 states and DC.
Not included
✕FloMag, for pH below 5.5 (below 6.0 in a 1.0 or 1.5 cu ft tank): sold separately ($225).
✕A funnel. For a tank with a 1-1/4 inch side fill port, the domehole funnel ($99); for the top opening with the valve off, the Filter Media Funnel ($35). Our neutralizers sold with calcite ship with a funnel.
Open the box the day it arrives. A 50 lb box can split in transit. If it is damaged or calcite has spilled, note it with the carrier, take photos, and tell us within 3 days of delivery.
When to add calcite
Once a year, in a dark room, hold a flashlight against the back of the tank. The shadow line is the top of the calcite.
When the bed is about half down, add calcite: about 1 box on a 1.0 or 1.5 cu ft tank, 1 to 2 boxes on a 2.0 or 2.5.
Fill to about 10 inches below the fill port. You add to the bed; you never dump it and start over.
The first pH readings after a fresh fill run high from fine dust, and the first water out can look milky. Give it a couple of weeks of normal use before you judge the pH.
The full step-by-step (water off, cap off, siphon, pour, reseal) is in How to Service Your Acid Neutralizer, and Aidan does a top-off in this video (1:24). Do not let the tank run empty: acidic water goes straight to the pipes again. Questions: call 800-460-5810 or text Aidan at 443-277-2204, 7 days a week, 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern.
What ships
One 50 lb box of granular calcite (about 1/2 cu ft)
One 50 lb box of granular calcite for any upflow or backwashing neutralizer. Most top-offs take 1 or 2 boxes.
Calcite is crushed, screened limestone, mostly calcium carbonate. Acidic water dissolves a little of it on every pass through the tank, and that raises the pH. Once the water reaches neutral it stops dissolving, so plain calcite brings water to about pH 7.0 to 7.5 and does not push it alkaline. Raising the pH cuts down the copper that acidic water dissolves from the pipes.
Each box holds 50 lb of granular calcite made by Pennsy Supply (Oldcastle); its Water Neutralizer fine calcite, made at the Thomasville, PA plant, is listed by NSF to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60. It goes into any calcite acid neutralizer tank, any brand, upflow or backwashing. Check the level once a year and add calcite when the bed is about half down.

Only if your pH is low. Plain calcite handles pH 5.5 and up in a 2.0 or 2.5 cu ft tank, and 6.0 and up in a 1.0 or 1.5. Below that, mix FloMag into the calcite box by box. On a 2.5 cu ft tank: 2 to 3 lb of FloMag per 50 lb box at pH 5.0 to 5.5, and 5 lb at pH 4.0 to 5.0. For a 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 cu ft tank, or below pH 4.0, call or text and we set the mix for your water. Never use FloMag by itself.
Check the level once a year and add calcite when the bed is about half down. Typical times between top-offs are 6 to 12 months on a 1.0 cu ft tank, 18 to 24 on a 1.5, 24 to 30 on a 2.0 and 30 to 36 on a 2.5. Very acidic water and heavy use shorten it. Step by step: how to service your acid neutralizer.
A little. The calcium and magnesium that neutralize the acid are hardness minerals, and calcite typically adds about 3 to 6 grains per gallon. We recommend a softener only if the water after the neutralizer tests 7 grains or more.
It is natural limestone, mostly calcium carbonate. The maker, Pennsy Supply (Oldcastle), lists its Water Neutralizer fine calcite from the Thomasville, Pennsylvania plant with NSF to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60, the standard for chemicals used to treat drinking water.
Sometimes. Home centers usually do not stock neutralizer calcite, but a water treatment supply house may. In his calcite video Aidan puts a 50 lb bag at about $25 to $75 locally, and says shipping can take the price to $145 or more. Ask for granular neutralizer calcite, not a powder.

What Calcite Costs Over Time
A neutralizer only works while there is calcite in it.
Can you get it locally?
Sometimes, and for less. In his calcite video Aidan puts a 50 lb bag at about $25 to $75 locally, and says shipping can take the price to $145 or more. Home centers usually do not carry it; a water treatment supply house may. Ask for granular neutralizer calcite, not a powder.

About $4 to $10 a month
An empty tank means acidic water returns, as Aidan puts it in his calcite video. Check the level once a year and add calcite when the bed is about half down. On a 2.5 cu ft tank, 1 to 2 boxes every 30 to 36 months works out to roughly $4 to $10 a month (our arithmetic); very acidic water and heavy use cost more.
What you get for $145
The calcite: 50 lb of granular calcite made by Pennsy Supply (Oldcastle); its Water Neutralizer fine calcite is listed by NSF to NSF/ANSI/CAN 60.
The grade: nearly all grains 0.85 to 2 mm, coarser than sand, so it stays in the tank.
Delivered: one 50 lb box, shipped free to the lower 48 states and DC.
