Standard DIY install. You'll need a nearby electrical outlet (110V) and a drain line for the backwash cycle. Most homeowners complete the installation in 2 to 3 hours.
Requirements: A standard 110V electrical outlet within reach of the valve's power cord, and a floor drain or standpipe for the 1/2" backwash drain line.

Installation Steps

  1. Shut off the main water supply and relieve pressure at a nearby faucet
  2. Install a 20" Big Blue sediment filter upstream to protect the carbon media (recommended for well water)
  3. Connect the system inlet and outlet to the main water line using the 1" stainless steel bypass valve
  4. Run the 1/2" drain line from the valve to a floor drain or standpipe
  5. Plug the Fleck 2510SXT transformer into a standard 110V outlet
  6. Program the backwash schedule on the LCD display (Aidan can walk you through this over the phone)
  7. Open the bypass valve slowly, then switch to service position
  8. Run a manual backwash cycle to flush carbon fines (water will be dark at first, that's normal)

The backwash cycle does the heavy lifting. The Fleck 2510SXT automatically reverses water flow on a programmable schedule, flushing sediment and redistributing the carbon bed. This extends media life and maintains consistent water quality.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Automatic Backwash cycle runs on your programmed schedule (typically every 3 to 7 days). The valve handles this automatically. No manual intervention needed.
  • Every 3 to 5 Years Replace Centaur carbon media. Backwashing extends media life by keeping the bed clean and preventing channeling. When it's time, you can order replacement carbon from us.
  • Every 3 to 6 Months Replace sediment pre-filter cartridge (if using a Big Blue upstream). Frequency depends on sediment levels in your water.
  • Periodic Monitor water quality. If you notice the rotten egg smell, chlorine taste, or odor returning, test your water and consider replacing media sooner.

Replacement Carbon Media

Pro tip: Always use genuine Centaur catalytic carbon for replacement. Standard coconut shell or wood-based carbon doesn't have the catalytic properties needed for hydrogen sulfide and chloramine removal. Need help with media replacement or backwash settings? Call or text 800-460-5810.

Why Choose a Backwashing Centaur Carbon Filter?

Self-Cleaning Carbon Filtration with the Fleck 2510SXT

This 1.5 cubic foot backwashing carbon filter combines Centaur catalytic activated carbon with the Fleck 2510SXT digital control valve for fully automatic whole-house water treatment. The Fleck valve runs a programmable backwash cycle that flushes sediment, loosens compacted media, and redistributes the carbon bed, keeping the system performing at its best without manual intervention. Centaur catalytic carbon (manufactured by Calgon Carbon) removes hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, chloramines, PFAS, VOCs, and taste/odor compounds. Unlike standard activated carbon, Centaur's catalytic properties actively break down contaminants rather than just trapping them. The automatic backwash extends media life to 3 to 5 years by preventing channeling and sediment buildup. Designed for well water and city water. Handles flow rates up to 10 GPM, suitable for most 1 to 3 bathroom homes. Requires a standard 110V outlet and drain line. For homes without a nearby drain or outlet, see our non-backwashing carbon filter. Need more capacity? See the 2.5 cubic foot version for larger homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell), chlorine, chloramines, PFAS, VOCs, and general taste/odor issues. Centaur catalytic carbon doesn't just trap contaminants like standard carbon. It catalytically breaks them down on the surface of the pores. That's why it handles chloramines and H2S that regular activated carbon can't touch.

The Fleck 2510SXT reverses the water flow through the carbon bed on a programmable schedule (typically every 3 to 7 days). This flushes out trapped sediment, loosens compacted media, and redistributes the carbon evenly. The result is longer media life, more consistent filtration, and less chance of channeling compared to non-backwashing systems.

Yes to both. The Fleck 2510SXT needs a standard 110V outlet to power the digital valve, and a 1/2" drain line to a floor drain or standpipe for the backwash discharge. If you don't have a nearby drain or outlet, consider our non-backwashing carbon filter instead, which needs neither.

3 to 5 years under normal use. Because the automatic backwash cycle keeps the media bed clean and prevents channeling, you typically get longer media life than with a non-backwashing system. When it's time to replace, order replacement Centaur carbon from us. If you need more capacity, the 2.5 cubic foot version lasts even longer.

Yes. The installation requires basic plumbing plus running a drain line and plugging in the power transformer. Most homeowners finish in 2 to 3 hours. We provide free phone support if you need help with the plumbing connections or programming the Fleck valve. Call or text 800-460-5810.

Backwashing is better for well water with sediment, higher contaminant loads, or situations where you want the system to self-clean. Non-backwashing is simpler (no drain, no electricity) and works great for city water or clean well water. Not sure which? Call Aidan at 800-460-5810 with your water test results.

Centaur is made by Calgon Carbon from bituminous coal using a patented catalytic process. Standard coconut shell carbon only works through adsorption, trapping contaminants on its surface. Centaur has catalytic properties that actively decompose hydrogen sulfide and chloramines through chemical reactions. It's the same grade of carbon used in municipal water treatment plants.

Same valve and media, different tank size. The 1.5 cubic foot model uses a 10x54 tank and handles up to 10 GPM, sized for 1 to 3 bathroom homes. The 2.5 cubic foot model uses a 13x54 tank with higher flow capacity for larger homes. The 2.5 also has a longer media lifespan because the extra carbon provides more contact time. If you're not sure which size, call Aidan at 800-460-5810.

Why Professional-Grade Costs More (And Why It's Worth It)

Same components as a $3,500 professional install. Fraction of the price.

What You Get With Budget Carbon Filters

Standard carbon filters use cheap coconut shell or wood-based carbon with basic timer valves. They handle chlorine, but they can't break down chloramines or hydrogen sulfide. The catalytic reaction isn't there. With less media and a cheaper valve, you get channeling within a year, reduced flow, and media that needs replacing every 1 to 2 years.

Most budget filters ship with no support. When the rotten egg smell comes back, you're on your own.

What Makes This System Different

Centaur catalytic carbon is made by Calgon Carbon using a patented process. It's the same grade used in municipal water treatment plants. It doesn't just trap contaminants through adsorption. It catalytically breaks down hydrogen sulfide and chloramines on contact. That's the difference.

The Fleck 2510SXT is one of the most trusted digital valves in the industry. The automatic backwash cycle keeps the carbon bed clean and extends media life. And you get 7-day-a-week support from someone who actually installs these systems.

455+ Verified Reviews
29+ Success Rate

After 29 years of installing and selling whole-house carbon filtration systems, we know what works and what doesn't. Every component in this system was chosen because it performs reliably in real homes, not because it's the cheapest option on a price sheet.

The Industry "Return Policy" Trap +

Most online water treatment retailers have a 'return policy' that requires you to ship the entire system back at your expense. That means draining a tank full of wet carbon media, packing it, and paying $150 to $200 in shipping. Then they hit you with a 15-25% restocking fee. It's designed to make returns impractical.

How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
It Doesn't Fix Your Water

If the system fails to remove the chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, or taste/odor issues it's designed to eliminate, that's on us.

2
You Call Us, We Fix It

We troubleshoot with you. Water test results, installation photos, flow rates. Most issues are resolved with a quick adjustment.

Full Refund, No Hassle

If we can't resolve the issue, you get a full refund. We handle the logistics. You don't ship anything back. That's the difference between a real guarantee and a return policy.
