Who it is for
Sites with 1.5 inch plumbing: large homes with a 1.5 inch main, farms, irrigation wells, laundromats, restaurants and apartment buildings. Our residential iron filters all have 1 inch connections ("Everything we have is an inch," Aidan says), and this is the step up. In his words: "we go to a commercial size for like apartments and massive houses with inch and a half to two-inch plumbing."
Not the right fit
- ✕A home on 1 inch plumbing. Our residential iron filters use the Fleck 2510 AiQ air-injection valve with 1 inch connections, and they cost less (table below).
- ✕A well that cannot supply 20 to 25 GPM for the backwash. The backwash is how the filter flushes out the iron it has caught. The residential sizes need less: about 5 GPM for the 1.5 cu ft, up to 12 to 15 GPM for the 3.5 cu ft.
- ✕A room without the height. It stands about 75 inches tall with the valve, and the valve comes off the top to load the media.
- ✕Bacteria or hardness. It does not disinfect and it does not soften. A softener goes after the iron filter.

How much water it treats
The Fleck 2815 valve can pass 70 GPM, but the Katalox Light bed decides how much water comes out clean. Watch Water designs Katalox Light filters at 8.2 GPM per square foot of bed and allows up to about 12. This tank's 16 inch bed is 1.4 square feet, so it treats about 11 GPM continuous and about 17 GPM at peak. Watch Water's own caution: "At higher flow rate filtration quality might be compromised."

What your well has to supply
During the backwash, Aidan asks for 20 to 25 GPM from the well. Watch Water's backwash rate for this bed works out to 14 to 17 GPM for 10 to 15 minutes, plus a short rinse. Have your well pump's flow checked before you order.

What your plumber does

How it works
Water flows down through 4 cubic feet of Katalox Light. The media's manganese dioxide coating turns dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into particles, and the bed filters them out, along with sediment down to 3 microns. When the controller calls for a backwash, the valve reverses the flow and flushes what the bed caught to the drain. This unit has no air injection and no chemical feed. How long the media lasts
It depends on how much water runs through it and how much iron is in it. In homes Aidan sees 6 to 8 years; Watch Water rates Katalox Light for 7 to 10. Write the install date on the tank, and when iron or the smell comes back, it is time for new media. The tank and valve stay.
Certifications and origin
Watch Water states that Katalox Light is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for drinking water use and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free compliance; it is made in Germany. Pentair states that the Fleck 2815 is tested and certified by the WQA to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for material safety and NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free compliance. These are the parts' certifications; there is no listing for the assembled filter.
