Most homeowners install the VH200 themselves in 1-2 hours. The compact size makes it easy to fit in tight spaces. Basic plumbing skills required. No special tools needed.

  1. 1 Choose location: Mount after all pre-treatment (sediment filter, iron filter) and before the water distributes to the house. Leave 18" clearance below for maintenance.
  2. 2 Cut into main line: Install shutoff valves on both sides of the UV chamber for easy isolation during maintenance.
  3. 3 Connect plumbing: Use the combo fittings (3/4" FNPT / 1" MNPT). Use copper fittings at the UV chamber connections - PEX does not work well at these connection points.
  4. 4 Plug in controller: Connect to a standard 120V GFCI-protected outlet. Power consumption is only 35W. The system must run continuously while the home is in use.
  5. 5 Turn on and verify: Open water slowly, check for leaks, confirm the controller shows the lamp is active and the countdown timer has started.
Pro tip from a customer: "Use silicone lube on the O-rings and plenty of tape on the threaded fittings. Make sure you install copper lines to the light - PEX does not work." - Ray P., Verified Buyer
Pre-treatment required: If your water has iron above 0.3 ppm, hardness above 7 gpg, or visible sediment, you must install the appropriate treatment upstream of the UV system. Dirty water will coat the quartz sleeve and reduce UV effectiveness. See pre-treatment requirements
One lamp, once a year, 15 minutes. That's the entire maintenance requirement. No chemicals to buy, no filters to change, no settings to adjust.

UV Lamp Replacement Every 12 months

The only required annual maintenance. Even if the lamp still glows, UV-C output degrades to 60-70% by month 12, not enough for full disinfection. The controller will alert you when it's time. Swap takes about 15 minutes. Replacement lamp: S200RL-HO ($100)

Quartz Sleeve Cleaning During each lamp change

Wipe the quartz sleeve with a soft cloth and white vinegar to remove any mineral film. Inspect for cracks or permanent cloudiness. A clean sleeve is critical for maximum UV transmission.

Quartz Sleeve Replacement Every 2-3 years

Replace the quartz sleeve (QS-200, $40-$60) if it shows cracks, chips, or won't clean clear. Most homeowners get 2-3 years before replacement is needed.

O-Ring Inspection During each lamp change

Check the O-rings at each end of the quartz sleeve. If dried out, cracked, or compressed flat, replace them. A leaking O-ring is the most common (and most preventable) source of drips.

Compare to chlorine injection: Monthly chemical refills ($200-$400/year), pH monitoring, a contact tank, and a carbon filter downstream. UV maintenance is one lamp, once a year, 15 minutes.

Compact, Proven UV Disinfection for Smaller Homes

NSF 55 Class A certified. Destroys 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and parasites including Cryptosporidium and Giardia.

The Viqua VH200 delivers reliable UV-C disinfection at 254 nanometers, the precise wavelength that scrambles microbial DNA on contact. At 9 GPM (30 mJ/cm2 dose), it handles normal household use in homes with 1 to 2 bathrooms without restricting flow or pressure. Nothing is added to your water. No chemicals, no chlorine taste, no disinfection byproducts. The only ongoing maintenance is one UV lamp replacement per year ($100), a 15-minute job. Compare that to chlorine injection systems that cost $200-$400/year in chemicals alone and require monthly monitoring. Viqua (part of Trojan Technologies, the world's largest UV manufacturer) has been the industry standard in residential UV disinfection for over two decades. The VH200 features a 304 stainless steel chamber, high-output lamp with 9,000-hour life, and an electronic controller that displays remaining lamp life and alarms if the lamp fails. It is the most popular UV system for smaller homes and the compact size (just 15" long) fits in tight mechanical rooms where larger units can't.

Frequently Asked Questions

The VH200 destroys 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and cysts including E. coli, total coliform, Giardia, Cryptosporidium (chlorine-resistant), hepatitis A, norovirus, rotavirus, Legionella, Salmonella, and Campylobacter. It achieves this through UV-C light at 254 nanometers, which scrambles microbial DNA on contact. The system delivers a 40 mJ/cm2 UV dose at 7 GPM, the NSF 55 Class A standard for treating microbiologically unsafe water.

The VH200 is sized for homes with 1 to 2 bathrooms, delivering 9 GPM of UV-treated water at 30 mJ/cm2. This covers normal household usage including a shower, kitchen, and laundry running simultaneously. For larger homes with 3 or more bathrooms, the Viqua VH410 (18 GPM, $995) provides double the capacity. When in doubt, size up. The VH410 costs only $100 more and gives you significantly more headroom.

Every 12 months, regardless of whether the bulb still appears to be working. UV-C output degrades over time even though the bulb continues to glow. By month 12, output may drop to 60-70% of original intensity, not enough for full disinfection. The VH200's electronic controller tracks lamp life and alerts you when replacement is due. The replacement lamp (S200RL-HO) costs $100 and the swap takes about 15 minutes.

Yes. A 5-micron sediment pre-filter upstream of the UV chamber is strongly recommended. It catches particulates that could shadow bacteria from the UV light. If your water has iron above 0.3 ppm, hardness above 7 grains per gallon, or any visible cloudiness, you need to address those issues before adding UV. Iron fouls the quartz sleeve within weeks, and turbidity creates shadows where bacteria survive. Clean water first, then UV as the final disinfection step.

Yes. Most homeowners install the VH200 in 1 to 2 hours with basic plumbing skills. The compact unit (15" x 3.5") mounts to the wall and splices into the main water line. You need shutoff valves on both sides, a standard 120V GFCI outlet, and copper fittings at the UV chamber connections (PEX does not work well at these connection points). Leave 18 inches of clearance below for maintenance access. If you are not comfortable with plumbing, a local plumber can handle it in about an hour.

The VH200 delivers 9 GPM of UV-treated water and is sized for 1 to 2 bathroom homes ($895). The VH410 delivers 18 GPM, double the capacity, and is designed for 3+ bathroom homes ($995). Both deliver the same 40 mJ/cm2 UV dose (NSF 55 Class A) and use the same electronic controller technology. The VH410 uses a larger chamber (23.5" vs 15") and consumes 60W vs the VH200's 35W. The VH410 costs only $100 more. For a detailed comparison, see our Viqua VH200 vs VH410 guide.

No. UV is a disinfection technology. It kills living organisms but does not physically remove anything from the water. It has no effect on iron, manganese, sediment, chemicals, heavy metals, hardness, or taste and odor. If your water has these issues in addition to bacteria, you need separate treatment for each problem. The typical treatment sequence is: sediment filter, then iron filter, then UV system, then acid neutralizer or water softener (if needed).

Viqua VH200 9 GPM UV Water Filter
Viqua VH200 9 GPM UV W... $895.00

UV Disinfection: The Most Affordable Protection

Compare the true cost of UV vs chlorine injection over 10 years.

Thinking about chlorine injection instead?

Chlorine injection systems cost $1,500-$3,000 upfront, plus $200-$400/year in chemicals, plus a contact tank ($500+), plus a carbon filter to remove the chlorine taste. They also struggle with chlorine-resistant parasites like Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Over 10 years, that's $5,000-$8,000+ in total ownership cost.

The VH200 costs $895 upfront with one $100 lamp replacement per year. Total 10-year cost: roughly $1,900. A fraction of the cost, better disinfection, zero chemicals.

Solved my very high iron issues

"I had well water with over 20 ppm ferrous and 7 ppm of ferric iron, plus manganese and some sulfur. Local water companies rejected me, said they couldn't help. I purchased two Fleck 2.5 cu. ft. 2510AIO iron filter tanks with Katalox-Light. Problem solved."
