Alkaline water is a multi-billion dollar category built on a simple pitch: higher pH water will balance your body, boost hydration, and fight disease. Here is what the evidence actually supports, where your money is wasted, and the one situation where water pH genuinely matters in your home.

pH measures how acidic or basic water is on a 0 to 14 scale. 7 is neutral. Every step is a tenfold change: pH 6 water is ten times more acidic than pH 7. Ordinary tap water runs roughly 6.5 to 8.5 (the EPA's recommended secondary range). "Alkaline water" products are typically pH 8 to 9.5, made either by adding mineral compounds or by running water through an electric ionizer that splits it into alkaline and acidic streams.

Two things worth knowing before we get to the claims:
- Naturally alkaline water is nothing exotic. Well water flowing through limestone picks up calcium carbonate and often sits at pH 7.5 to 8.5. Millions of homes drink "alkaline water" without knowing it.
- pH without alkalinity is fragile. Ionizers raise pH electrically without adding much mineral buffering, so the elevated pH collapses quickly (and instantly in your stomach). Mineral-based pH, like what an acid neutralizer's calcite adds, is buffered and stable. This distinction matters for plumbing; for your body, neither survives stomach acid.

Is it at least safe? For healthy adults, yes, moderate consumption of pH 8 to 9.5 water is considered safe. Very high pH water (above roughly 10) can irritate skin and eyes and give water a slippery feel and soda-like taste. People with kidney disease should ask their doctor before deliberately loading up on mineral-heavy or ionized water, since impaired kidneys handle mineral excretion differently.
Why Your Body Ignores Water pH
Follow the glass of pH 9 water through your body and the marketing story falls apart at the first stop:
The stomach
Stomach acid sits at pH 1.5 to 3.5, thousands of times more acidic than tap water. Your pH 9 water is neutralized within moments of arrival.
The intestine
The pancreas releases bicarbonate and re-alkalizes everything leaving the stomach anyway, regardless of what you drank.
The blood
Lungs and kidneys hold blood pH at 7.35 to 7.45 continuously. If drinking water could shift blood pH, it would be a medical emergency, not a wellness product.
This is textbook physiology, not a controversial position. It is also why the alkaline pitch quietly retreats to vaguer territory ("supports balance," "micro-clustered hydration") when pressed for mechanisms.
Where Water pH Actually Matters: Your Plumbing
Here is the irony of the alkaline water craze: pH is genuinely important, just not inside your body. Between roughly a fifth and a quarter of the well water tests we review come back acidic, and acidic water does real, cumulative, expensive damage:
- Blue-green staining on sinks, tubs, and around drains: that is copper dissolved out of your own pipes.
- Pinhole leaks in copper plumbing, typically showing up after years of slow corrosion, often inside walls.
- Metallic taste and elevated copper (and sometimes lead, from old solder) in your drinking water; corrosion is a genuine health pathway, unlike beverage pH.

The fix for acidic water is a whole-house acid neutralizer: a tank of natural calcite (crushed limestone) that dissolves a small amount of calcium carbonate into the water as it passes, raising pH to neutral.
