How to Remove Rust from Well Water (What Actually Works)

Why your well water turns everything orange, why stain removers and sediment filters never fix it, and the one type of filter that actually removes the iron causing it.

TL;DR: The Short Answer

The "rust" in your well water is dissolved iron picked up from iron-bearing rock in your aquifer. Stain removers like CLR and Iron Out only clean the symptom; the stains come back within days because iron keeps flowing in from the well. Inline sediment filters and water softeners cannot reliably remove it either. When your water first comes out of the tap, what does it look like?

That's ferrous (clear-water) iron. Iron is fully dissolved in your water and oxidizes into visible rust after it hits air. That's ferric (red-water) iron. The iron has already oxidized into solid particles before reaching your tap. Mild cases often improve with an air injection iron filter (sometimes paired with UV), but when slime is the primary problem, the well usually needs shock chlorination first. Why Well Water Turns Rusty

If your tubs, showers, toilets, and laundry are turning orange, you have iron in your well water. The aquifer your well draws from runs through iron-bearing rock, slowly dissolving it and carrying that iron into your water. When the dissolved iron hits air, it oxidizes (literally rusts) and turns orange, which is why the staining shows up on fixtures, in the dishwasher, and on white laundry.

Iron shows up in two main forms, and knowing which one you have matters for treatment. Most wells have some of both.

Ferrous Iron (Clear-Water Iron)

Fully dissolved. Water comes out of the tap clear, then stains appear over hours or days as the iron oxidizes in the open air. This is the most common form in private wells.

Ferric Iron (Red-Water Iron)

Already oxidized into solid rust particles underground or in your plumbing. Water looks orange or rusty the moment it leaves the tap.

How much iron causes staining?

The EPA's secondary standard for iron is just 0.3 ppm (mg/L). Staining begins at or slightly above that level. Private wells in iron-bearing geology commonly run 1 to 10 ppm, and we regularly see wells above that.

Three Fixes That Don't Work (and Why)

1. CLR, Iron Out, and other stain removers

This is the first thing almost everyone tries. You get iron stains in the toilet or shower, run out to the hardware store for CLR or Iron Out, scrub it clean, and three days later the stains are back. These products remove the stain, not the iron. As long as iron keeps flowing in from your well, the staining is permanent maintenance, not a fix.

2. Inline sediment filters

Google "how to get iron out of water" and inline sediment filters come up everywhere. They don't work for this problem because they aren't designed to remove clear-water (dissolved) iron; dissolved iron passes straight through a sediment cartridge. Meanwhile any oxidized iron particles clog the cartridge quickly, so you get falling water pressure and frequent filter changes without solving anything.

3. Water softeners

Water treatment salespeople will sometimes tell you a softener "takes care of everything." A softener might handle low iron levels for a little while, but iron fouls and shortens the life of the softener's resin bed, and the system fails over time. The pattern to notice: every failed fix above treats a symptom (stains, particles, hardness) instead of removing dissolved iron before it enters your plumbing. That's the job of a dedicated iron filter.

What Actually Works: Air Injection Iron Filtration

The permanent fix for rusty well water is a dedicated iron filter installed on the main line where water enters your home. Iron bacteria note: if you see orange slime or gel in your toilet tank, you likely have iron bacteria on top of dissolved iron. Many customers with mild iron bacteria report good results from the 2510AIO with Katalox Light, typically with a UV purifier installed after the iron filter. What Size Iron Filter You Need

Sizing depends on three things: how many people are in your home, how much iron is in the water, and your well's backwash flow rate. Here are the sizes we sell online, with current pricing:

Homes with 5 or more bathrooms, high simultaneous water use, or iron above 30 ppm should step up to the 3.5 cubic foot system. Your well pump must be able to deliver the minimum backwash flow rate for the size you choose; that's the spec most buyers miss. Always put a sediment prefilter first

Removing the Rust Stains You Already Have

Once the iron filter is in, existing stains stop coming back and cleanup is one-time work:

  • Toilets, tubs, and sinks: a rust stain remover like Iron Out or a pumice stone on porcelain handles established stains. Avoid chlorine bleach on iron stains; it can set them permanently.
  • Laundry: rewash affected loads with a rust stain remover made for fabrics, not bleach.
  • Dishwasher and appliances: run a cycle with a rust remover product formulated for appliances.

Is Rust in Well Water Dangerous?

Iron in well water is classified by the EPA under secondary (aesthetic) standards, not health-based primary standards. At the levels found in most private wells, drinking it is not considered a health hazard; the damage is to fixtures, laundry, appliances, and water heaters, plus the metallic taste. Two caveats: iron bacteria can create conditions that harbor other organisms, and very high iron often travels with manganese, which does have health-based guidance at elevated levels. Why is my well water suddenly rusty?

Sudden rust usually means something changed: heavy rain or drought shifted your water table, the well pump is drawing from a different depth, a section of steel casing or old galvanized pipe is corroding, or recent plumbing work stirred up settled iron. Run an outside spigot for 20 minutes; if it clears, it was likely disturbed sediment. If it stays rusty, get a water test.

What size iron filter do I need for my house?

It depends on household size, bathroom count, and your well pump's backwash flow rate. As a rule of thumb: 1.5 cubic feet for 2 to 3 people (needs 5 GPM backwash), 2.0 for 3 to 5 people (needs 7 to 8 GPM), and 2.5 for 3 to 8 people in 3 to 5 bathroom homes (needs 10 GPM).
