How to Stop Copper Pipe Corrosion for Good

- The cause: Corrosion inside copper plumbing is driven by acidic water (pH below about 6.8). As water flows through the pipe it slowly dissolves the copper wall from the inside out until the pipe thins enough to spring pinhole leaks. Why Copper Dissolves From the Inside Out
Copper handles neutral water (pH 7.0 to 8.0) for 50+ years without a problem. Drop the pH below about 6.8 and the water becomes mildly acidic. Every gallon that flows through the line dissolves a microscopic amount of copper off the pipe wall. Hour after hour, year after year, the wall gets thinner and thinner until one spot punches through and you get a pinhole leak.

EPA's secondary drinking water standard for pH is 6.5 to 8.5, but that range is about taste and aesthetics, not plumbing protection. For copper, you want pH at or above 7.0.
Two visible symptoms tell you this is happening:

Why the Hot Water Side Corrodes 4 to 5 Times Faster
Corrosion on the hot water side runs roughly four to five times faster than on the cold side. Heat accelerates the reaction between the acidic water and the copper wall. That is why the damage pattern in an acidic-water home is so predictable:
Hot side (fails first)
Water heater dies early, dishwasher fittings corrode, hot lines spring the first pinhole leaks. If your leak history is all on hot lines, that is the acidic-water signature.
Cold side (fails later)
Same corrosion, slower clock. Cold lines in the same house often last 10+ years longer before showing damage.

Blue-Green on the OUTSIDE of the Pipe (Usually Not Corrosion)
Homeowners send me photos of blue-green film on the outside of basement copper and assume the pipes are rotting. Usually the explanation is simpler and mostly harmless: condensation.
In summer, well water comes into the house at around 50-some degrees while the basement air might be 70 to 75 degrees. Warm humid air hits the cold pipe, moisture condenses on the copper, and the constantly damp surface slowly develops a blue-green patina on the outside of the pipe. It is the same reaction that turns a penny green.

Pipe Coatings and Chemical Sealants: Why We Don't Recommend Them
Some companies sell devices that coat the inside of your pipes, or sealant products that circulate through the water and lay down a protective film. Phosphate feeders work on the same principle: meter a chemical into the water so it coats the plumbing.
Here is our position after 32 years: you are putting a chemical in the water you drink. The manufacturers say the coatings are safe, and regulators allow some of them, but it is not something we do and not something we recommend when a completely natural alternative exists. There are also practical problems:
- The coating has to be maintained forever. Stop feeding the chemical and the corrosion resumes.
- Coverage is never perfect. Dead legs, low-flow branches, and already-pitted sections do not coat evenly.
- It masks the symptom instead of correcting the cause. The water is still acidic, and everything the coating misses (heater tank, brass fittings, fixture internals) still sees aggressive water.
A calcite acid neutralizer fixes the actual chemistry instead. Calcite is crushed limestone, the same natural mineral that makes spring water neutral. Why an Under-Sink Filter Cannot Protect Your Plumbing
This question comes up on almost every call: "If I put a filter under the kitchen sink, will that protect me?" No. An under-sink unit treats the water at one faucet, after that water has already traveled through your entire plumbing system. Every other pipe, the water heater, the washing machine, the shower valves, and all the fittings still see raw acidic water.
Corrosion protection has to happen at the point of entry: right after the pressure tank, before the line branches to anything else. Install the neutralizer there and every drop of water in the house passes through the calcite bed first. Good, neutral water reaches every pipe and fixture instead of just one tap.
The Permanent Fix: A Calcite Acid Neutralizer
An acid neutralizer is a tank of calcite installed on your main line. Water flows through the media bed, dissolves a small amount of the mineral, and exits at neutral pH. It is self-regulating (you cannot overshoot)
The more acidic the water, the more calcite it dissolves; the closer to neutral, the less it takes on. With plain calcite, the pH typically rises to neutral and stops around 7. A pH of 5.5 coming in leaves the tank at roughly neutral, and water that is already near 7 barely touches the media. That is why calcite is the safest way to do this: the media chemistry sets the ceiling, not a dial that can be set wrong.

Will an under-sink filter protect my pipes from corrosion?
No. An under-sink filter treats water at a single faucet after it has already traveled through the whole house. Every other pipe, the water heater, and every fixture still receive untreated acidic water. Corrosion protection must happen at the point of entry, before the plumbing branches, so all the water in the house is neutral.
Can an acid neutralizer raise my pH too high?
Not with plain calcite. The system is self-regulating: the more acidic the water, the more calcite dissolves, and the closer the water gets to neutral, the less it takes on. With plain calcite the pH typically stops around 7, which is neutral. Stronger blends (calcite plus FloMag) are used for very low pH and are dosed as part of sizing the system.
Does stopping the corrosion repair damage that already happened?
No. Pipe walls that have already thinned do not thicken back up, and existing pinholes still need to be patched. What the neutralizer does is stop the wall from getting any thinner from the day it is installed, so repairs finally hold, the water heater lasts its full life, and no new leaks form.
