What homeowners are saying
Every tank ships empty. The calcite, softener resin and Centaur carbon ship in separate boxes and bags and are loaded into the tanks at install through the included fill funnel. The UV lamp ships in its own tube and goes into the chamber at install. Drain tubing is not included.

No certification is claimed for the package as a system, and the VH410 is not certified by NSF. Ratings are given stage by stage.
We recommend having a plumber install it, ideally one who has installed water treatment before. This is the biggest kind of install we sell: five stages in a set order, three mineral tanks to load from 50 lb media boxes and bags, a drain line for the softener and an outlet for the UV light. Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810.
If you'd rather do it yourself, text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with any questions. Before you order, send him your water test and a photo of your utility area.
Order, from the well to the house
- Pressure tank (your existing tank)
- 20 inch Big Blue sediment filter, the first filter after the pressure tank
- Acid neutralizer, ahead of the softener, because the calcite adds 3 to 6 grains of hardness that the softener then removes
- Water softener
- Carbon tank
- UV light, last, on the cold line before any branch: it needs clear, soft water, and bacteria can grow in a carbon bed, so the UV treats the water on its way out
Why this order: the correct order for well water treatment.
Power
Two stages plug in: the softener valve on a standard outlet, and the UV controller, which VIQUA requires on a GFCI outlet (not included). The sediment filter, neutralizer and carbon tank need no power.
Drain
Only the softener needs a drain: 1/2 inch tubing with an air gap to a floor drain, standpipe or utility sink. Tubing is not included. The sediment filter, neutralizer, carbon tank and UV light have no drain.
Space
Three mineral tanks (the neutralizer and carbon tank 13 inch wide, the softener 10 inch), the softener's brine tank, the Big Blue housing on the wall and the UV chamber. Leave about 23.5 inches clear at the UV's lamp end so the lamp and sleeve can come out.
Loading the media and the lamp
Each tank ships empty. At install your plumber loads the calcite, resin and carbon through the included funnel and slides the UV lamp into the chamber. VIQUA's manual also calls for disinfecting the plumbing after the UV at start-up.
Time
Aidan's figure for a two-tank job is 3 to 4 hours of a plumber's time, and about an hour for a UV light alone. Five stages take longer, so ask your plumber to quote the whole job.
Step by step: how to install a well water system.
Sediment filter About every 4 to 6 months
Swap the 5 micron cartridge about every 4 to 6 months on a typical well: up to 12 months on a clean well, every other month on a dirty one. Flow dropping is the sign. Replacement cartridge, $55.
Acid neutralizer Check yearly
Calcite dissolves as it works. Once a year, shine a flashlight behind the tank to see the level; add calcite when it is about half gone, about every 30 to 36 months on the 2.5, usually 1 to 2 boxes. Calcite, $145 a 50 lb box.
Water softener Salt
Keep the salt level above the water level in the brine tank; it uses about 10 lb of salt per regeneration. In Aidan's service work, 10% crosslink resin on water protected from iron and chlorine has lasted 30 to 40 years.
Carbon tank About every 5 years
Replace the carbon about every 5 years (4 to 5 on a light rotten egg smell): with the head off, the old carbon comes out and 2.5 cubic feet of Centaur goes in through a funnel. Two 1 cubic foot bags are $590 at today's prices, plus a 1/2 cubic foot that Aidan prices by text. The tank stays.
UV light Lamp once a year
The controller counts down the lamp's days and beeps when it is due. Replacement lamp, $170. Clean the quartz sleeve periodically and replace it only if it will not come clean (sleeve, $145). VIQUA calls for disinfecting the plumbing after any lamp or sleeve change.

What's In This Package
Installed in this order on your main water line.
Who This 5-Stage System Is For
For a well with low pH, hard water and bacteria, and no iron
This package is for a private well whose water test shows low pH (blue-green stains, pinhole leaks in copper pipe), hard water (scale and spots) and bacteria (a coliform or E. coli result), with no iron problem: iron under 0.3 ppm, which is also what the UV light needs. A sediment filter goes in first, a carbon tank handles taste, odor and the farm chemicals that can reach groundwater, and the UV light goes last.
The 64,000 grain softener sets the household size: 5 or 6 people on water up to about 15 grains per gallon, 4 people up to about 20, or 3 people up to about 30. For 1 to 4 people up to about 15 grains, the 48,000 grain version is $5,975. Count the 3 to 6 grains the neutralizer adds as it works. The calcite corrects pH down to 5.5; below that, FloMag is added, sold separately.
If your test shows iron, orange stains or a strong rotten egg smell, this is the wrong package: the packages with an iron filter start at $3,995. If it shows no bacteria, the 2.5 neutralizer and 64,000 grain softener package is $3,495, and the carbon tank can be added on its own. On city water this is the wrong system. Send Aidan your test and he will tell you which one fits: Call 800-460-5810 or text Aidan at 443-277-2204.
