Who installs it

We recommend having a plumber install this package, ideally one who has installed water treatment before. Two tanks in a set order, each with its own drain line, make it the bigger kind of install and the one where a plumber matters most. Plan on about 3 to 4 hours of a plumber's time.

Where it goes

After the well's pressure tank. The neutralizer needs that pressure to backwash.
After a sediment filter, if your water needs one.
The acid neutralizer.
The water softener. It goes after the neutralizer because the calcite adds about 3 to 6 grains of hardness, which the softener takes out along with the well's own hardness.

What the install involves

Neutralizer: the five boxes of calcite are loaded into the empty tank with the funnel, then the bypass valve is plumbed into the main line.
Softener: the resin bags are loaded into the empty mineral tank through its fill funnel.
Two drain lines: a 1/2 inch line from each valve, with an air gap, to a floor drain, utility sink or standpipe. The neutralizer's backwash comes out hard, so its line end is secured.
Two outlets: a standard outlet (not switched) near each valve.
Well flow: about 5 to 7 gallons a minute while the neutralizer backwashes. A slower well still works; Aidan sets a longer backwash.
Salt: a couple of 40 lb bags in the brine tank.
Settings: the neutralizer ships set to backwash every 3 days; Aidan gives your plumber the setting for your water. The softener gets the time of day, capacity (48) and a hardness setting of your well's hardness plus about 6 grains for what the neutralizer adds. Set the two to start at different times overnight.

Neutralizer: calcite about every 30 to 36 months

✓The valve backwashes on its own on the days set in it, rinsing trapped iron and sediment out of the calcite and sending about 140 gallons to the drain.
✓Check the calcite and the drain line once a year. Hold a flashlight behind the tank in a dark room to see the level, and make sure the drain line is clear and not kinked.
✓Top it off when it is about half down, usually 1 to 2 boxes, to about 10 inches below the top. That space lets the backwash rinse the bed. The calcite dissolves as it works, so you add to it; you never replace it.

Softener: keep salt in it

✓Keep the salt level higher than the water level in the brine tank; a couple of bags in there is plenty.
✓About 7 lb of salt per regeneration. In Aidan's house a 40 lb bag lasts about 30 to 45 days.
✓Resin: in Aidan's service work, 10% crosslink resin on water protected from iron and chlorine has lasted 30 to 40 years.

A Backwashing Acid Neutralizer and Softener for Low pH With Iron

A Fleck 2510 backwashing neutralizer first, then a Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 grain softener

Acidic well water corrodes copper pipes from the inside, which leads to pinhole leaks and blue-green stains on fixtures. An acid neutralizer raises the pH with calcite: this 2.5 cubic foot backwashing tank corrects pH 5.5 to 6.9 with the five 50 lb boxes of calcite in the box. On the days set in its Fleck 2510 valve it backwashes, rinsing trapped iron and sediment out of the calcite and sending about 140 gallons to a drain. As the calcite dissolves it adds about 3 to 6 grains per gallon of hardness, so the softener goes after it. The Fleck 2510 AiQ on the neutralizer. Pentair, the company that makes Fleck valves, discontinued the 2510SXT and replaced it with the 2510 AiQ, and orders now ship with it. In Aidan's words, "It's easier to program and does the same job." The softener is the Fleck 5600SXT.

Both tanks ship empty: the 13 x 54 inch neutralizer tank with its Fleck 2510 valve, bypass valve and plug-in transformer; five 50 lb boxes of calcite; the Fleck 5600SXT softener tank with its bypass pre-installed on the valve; 1.5 cu ft of resin in separate bags; the brine tank; and two funnels. The calcite and the resin are loaded into the tanks at install.

You or your plumber supply 1/2 inch drain tubing for both valves, the pipe, fittings and adapters, and the salt.

We recommend one, ideally a plumber who has installed water treatment before. The neutralizer sends about 140 gallons to the drain each time it backwashes. It ships set to every 3 days; with no iron Aidan sets it to every 7 days, and with iron every 2 to 3 days. Your well needs to supply about 5 to 7 gallons a minute during the backwash. The softener uses about 7 lb of salt and 25 to 50 gallons of water each time it regenerates, only when the gallons you have used call for it.

Some owners on a septic system choose the non-backwashing neutralizer to keep that water out of it.

Add calcite about every 30 to 36 months, usually 1 to 2 boxes, when a flashlight behind the tank shows it about half down. Calcite is $145 per 50 lb box. You never replace it; it dissolves as it works.

The neutralizer tank carries a 10-year warranty and its valve 5 years. The softener carries 5 years on the control valve, 10 years on the mineral tank and 5 years on the brine tank. In Aidan's service work, 10% crosslink resin on water protected from iron and chlorine has lasted 30 to 40 years.
