"I couldn't believe how good my first glass of water was, compared to about four hours before without the filters. One more thing, I called a couple other filter companies and the salespeople are what I didn't like, I could tell they didn't have very good knowledge of the products, Aidan has the confidence and the answers." ★★★★★

Pick by how many showers run at once, not only by people.
Between two sizes, go bigger: more margin and longer carbon life.
Hardness over 25 grains? Choose a salt softener instead.

The flow math behind the sizes
The 3.7 and 5.6 GPM figures on this page are treatment numbers, not a limit on how much water reaches your faucets. Both tanks use 1 inch Clack heads and Vortech tanks with no gravel bed. Aidan puts the flow through a single 2.5 cubic foot tank at about 17 GPM, and on a two-tank setup with a 1.5 cubic foot carbon tank he says two showers run at once with barely a drop in pressure. A treatment number is how fast water can move and still spend enough time in the carbon. Calgon Carbon, which makes Centaur, sizes chloramine at 1 cubic foot of Centaur per 2.5 GPM, about 3 minutes in the carbon; chlorine reacts faster, in about 2 minutes. So the 1.5 cubic feet of Centaur here gives chloramine that full contact time at up to 3.7 GPM of steady use, about a shower and a bathroom sink at once, and chlorine at up to 5.6 GPM. A bigger tank holds more carbon, so the water spends longer in it at the same flow; that is why the sizes step up with the household. The conditioner tank allows more: Watch Water's sizing for Filtersorb SP3 works out to about 1.5 GPM per liter, so its 9 liters cover about 13 GPM. When more fixtures run than that, the water keeps flowing and spends a little less time in the carbon for those minutes.

These are treatment flows, not flow limits. Two showers at once is about 5 GPM. Your utility's water report says whether it uses chlorine or chloramine, and lists hardness, sometimes in mg/L: divide by 17.1 for grains per gallon.

Aidan's honest answer: for most hard water homes, a salt softener is the better buy. It removes the hardness and costs less to run. This salt-free pair is the right pick when a softener does not fit.

Four questions to ask any seller
How much carbon, and which carbon?
Which salt-free media, and how many liters?
Is the GPM the flow it treats chloramine at, or just how much water passes?
When does the media need replacing, and what does it cost?
Based on the carbon + salt-free combos sold by four large online brands, checked Nov 4, 2026.

We recommend having a plumber install it. Each tank is an inlet and an outlet, with no drain line and no electricity, so the pair is about two to four hours of a plumber's time (an hour or two per tank). Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. If you have done some plumbing and would rather do it yourself, text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with any questions.
The steps
On the cold main after the shutoff, before the water heater: carbon tank first.
Pour the media into each tank through the funnel.
Thread on the heads and connect in, between and out.
Let the carbon soak overnight (Calgon: 12 hours), in bypass.
Next morning: run the carbon tank clear, then open the conditioner.
Black carbon specks the first few days are normal.
The water still tests hard: that is how a conditioner works.
No salt, no backwash, no settings, no electricity.
Carbon refill: 1.5 cubic feet of Centaur: 1 x 1 cu ft bag and 1 x 1/2 cu ft bag. The 1 cubic foot bag is $295 today, so $295 plus the 1/2 bag, which Aidan prices by text.
SP3 refill: Aidan quotes about $1,200 to $1,500 for the 14 liters in the 2.5 cu ft; for the 9 liters here, text him for today's price.
Scale coming back on the kettle or showerhead means the SP3 is spent.
A refill is media only: the tanks and heads are reused.
Most carbon + salt-free combos look the same online. Here is what you can check on this one.
✔The media amounts are printed. 1.5 cubic feet of carbon and 9 liters of salt-free media. Most combos we checked do not publish both.
✔Name-brand media you can look up. Calgon Centaur carbon and Watch Water Filtersorb SP3, each with a public data sheet, not "proprietary" media.
✔All catalytic carbon, made for chloramine. Some combos blend in standard carbon, which is slow on chloramine.
✔Low pressure drop, with the treatment math shown. 1 inch heads and Vortech tanks with no gravel bed, and the page shows the flow at which chloramine gets Calgon's full contact time (3.7 GPM).
✔The running cost, up front. Carbon and SP3 refills are priced on this page. No "never needs replacing".
✔Aidan sizes it, and tells you if a softener fits better. Text your water report to 443-277-2204.
✔1.5 cu ft Centaur + 9 L Filtersorb SP3
✔Removes Chlorine + Chloramine
✔Scale Control to 25 Grains
✔No Salt, No Drain, No Electricity
✔1 Inch Heads, Low Pressure Drop
✔Two Clack Heads + Bypass Valves

Buy from us and you have a water treatment expert to call: questions from your plumber, black specks the first week, a media refill in a few years. You have my number.
No. It does not remove hardness, so the water still tests hard and will not feel slippery. It keeps the hardness from sticking: Aidan's words are that it converts it "to a microscopic crystal, so it can't attach itself to the plumbing and the water-using appliances." If you want soft water, choose a salt softener.
For most homes, Aidan recommends the softener: it removes the hardness and costs less to run. For this size, the Whole house water filter and softener (1.5 carbon + 48,000 grain softener) ($3,195). Choose this salt-free pair when you cannot run a drain or outlet to the spot, do not want to carry salt, are on a diet that limits sodium or potassium, or only need to stop scale. Not sure? Text Aidan at 443-277-2204.
Aidan sizes it for up to about 25 grains per gallon. Watch Water rates its media higher, but above 25 grains Aidan recommends a salt softener. Your water report may list hardness in mg/L; divide by 17.1 to get grains per gallon.
City water carries chlorine or chloramine. The carbon tank removes them, with the taste and smell, and protects the conditioner: Watch Water limits free chlorine reaching its media to 3 ppm, and SP3 also soaks up metals that would shorten its life.
Both. Centaur is a catalytic carbon that Calgon Carbon makes to break down chloramine faster than standard activated carbon. This 1.5 cu ft tank gives chloramine Calgon's full contact time at up to 3.7 GPM of steady use, about a shower and a bathroom sink at once, and chlorine at up to 5.6 GPM. Above that the water keeps flowing, with a little less time in the carbon.
Aidan's answer on these Vortech tanks: "we don't really get any complaints about flow or pressure drop." Both tanks use 1 inch Clack heads and Vortech tanks with no gravel bed. Aidan puts the flow through a single 2.5 cubic foot tank at about 17 GPM, and on a two-tank setup with a 1.5 cubic foot carbon tank he says two showers run at once with barely a drop in pressure. The 3.7 GPM on this page is not a flow limit: it is how fast water can move and still get Calgon's full chloramine contact time. Above it, the water keeps flowing. If your home runs more than that for long stretches, the next size up gives the water more time in the carbon. Not sure? Text Aidan at 443-277-2204.
Carbon: about 4 to 5 years for three or four people, longer for two (Aidan). A carbon refill is 1.5 cubic feet of Centaur: 1 x 1 cu ft bag and 1 x 1/2 cu ft bag. The 1 cubic foot bag is $295 today, so $295 plus the 1/2 bag, which Aidan prices by text. Filtersorb SP3: Aidan plans on about 3 years; Watch Water rates it 5 to 7. Aidan quotes about $1,200 to $1,500 for the 14 liters in the 2.5 cu ft; for the 9 liters here, text him for today's price.
We recommend one. Each tank is an inlet and an outlet with no drain line and no electricity, about two to four hours of a plumber's time for the pair, and Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. If you'd rather do it yourself, you can; text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with any questions.
No. Both tanks ship empty. The carbon and the Filtersorb SP3 ship separately and are poured in through the included funnel at install. A filled tank is too heavy to ship safely and could be damaged in freight.
Aidan recommends a regular salt softener ahead of a tankless heater. A conditioner leaves the hardness in the water, and a softener removes it.
Activated carbon reduces some PFAS, but this system is not certified for PFAS removal and we do not claim a percentage. It does not remove lead or fluoride; those need different filtration, usually at the kitchen sink. A city water test tells you whether you have them.
Yes, if a well test shows the water suits it. Watch Water, which makes Filtersorb SP3, lists a pH of 6.5 to 9.5, iron no higher than 0.5 ppm, manganese no higher than 0.05 ppm, and no hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell) or oil. It also says the water must be microbiologically safe or disinfected, which on a well usually means a UV light. Aidan is stricter on iron: he will not put a salt-free conditioner on water with iron. Hardness still has to be 25 grains or less.
On a well there is no chlorine for the carbon tank to take out; it still reduces taste, odor and many VOCs. If your well has none of those, ask Aidan whether the Salt-Free Water Conditioner on its own ($2,495) is all you need.
If the test shows iron, sulfur, acidity or bacteria, those are treated first, and after that Aidan usually recommends a salt softener. Text your well test to Aidan at 443-277-2204 and he will tell you what fits.
Filtersorb SP3 is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which cover materials safety in drinking water. Those standards do not test scale reduction, and we do not claim a scale reduction percentage.

What to check on any carbon + salt-free system
Ask four things. How much carbon, and which carbon? Which salt-free media, and how many liters? Is the GPM rating the flow at which it treats chloramine, or just how much water can pass? And what does the media replacement cost, and when? A claim that salt-free media never needs replacing, or a scale reduction percentage with no named test, is a claim you cannot check.

1-Year Risk-Free Guarantee
Our performance guarantee, in the words of our refund policy
If a water treatment system we sized for you is installed and still does not fix the problem it was sized for, we make it right. The guarantee applies when the system was chosen from a water test you reviewed with Aidan before you bought it; it was installed according to the instructions and maintained according to its manual; your water is within what the system was sized for; and you call us first, so we can troubleshoot the setup and replace parts if needed. If it still does not fix the problem after that, we refund the price of the system. You do not ship it back. Shipping, installation and plumbing costs are not refunded.

32Years in Water Treatment
Aidan sizes this system from your water report before you buy: your utility's report or a lab test, plus how many people and bathrooms. When he has, the guarantee below covers whether it fixes the problem it was sized for. Bought without that review, the 30-day return terms below still apply.
Returns
+
New, unopened equipment can be returned within 30 days of delivery with our approval; the buyer pays return freight and a 25% restocking fee applies (waived on an exchange of equal or greater value). Full terms: our refund policy.
How the guarantee works
1
It does not fix the problem
Chlorine taste and smell are still there, or new scale keeps forming, on water within what the system was sized for.
2
You call us first
Aidan troubleshoots the setup with you and replaces parts if needed.
Refund, nothing shipped back
If it still does not fix the problem, we refund the price of the system. Shipping, installation and plumbing are not refunded.
Not sure this is the right size? Don't guess. Text me a photo of your water utility's report, or a lab test, and how many people live in the house. I'll tell you which size fits, or whether a softener would suit you better.
