Working great 👍
Whole house water filter and softener systems for city water from Mid Atlantic Water. Each combo is a carbon filter and a water softener (or a salt-free conditioner) sized as a pair: a Clack non-backwashing carbon tank with Centaur catalytic carbon removes chlorine and chloramine taste and smell first, then the second tank treats hard water. Filter and softener combos with a Fleck 5600SXT salt softener: 1.0 cubic foot carbon and 32,000 grain softener $2,595 (1 or 2 people); 1.5 and 48,000 grain $3,195 (3 or 4 people); 2.5 and 64,000 grain $3,795 (5 or 6 people, the most popular), each sized up to about 15 grains per gallon of hardness; 3.5 and 80,000 grain $4,395 (7 or more people, or 5 or 6 people at about 16 to 30 grains, or 4 people at about 21 to 30); all four cost $195 to $495 less than the two tanks bought separately. Filter and salt-free conditioner combos with Watch Water Filtersorb SP3, which prevents scale up to about 25 grains without removing hardness, with no salt, no drain and no electricity: 1.5 cubic feet $3,895 (2 to 4 people), 2.0 $4,395 (3 to 5), 2.5 $4,795 (4 to 7). Both tanks ship empty with the media in separate bags or boxes, loaded at install; drain tubing is not included. We recommend having a plumber install it; Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. If you'd rather do it yourself, text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with any questions. Filter + Softener: Removes Chlorine and Hardness
A Clack carbon tank takes out chlorine and chloramine, then a Fleck 5600SXT salt softener takes the hardness out. Smallest to largest: 1.0 + 32K for 1 or 2 people, 1.5 + 48K for 3 or 4, 2.5 + 64K for 5 or 6 (the most popular) and 3.5 + 80K for 7 or more. The first three are sized up to about 15 grains of hardness; harder water usually takes the next size up (see Sizing).
Filter + Salt-Free Conditioner: Prevents Scale, No Salt
The same carbon tank, then a Filtersorb SP3 conditioner that keeps hardness up to about 25 grains from forming scale. It does not remove hardness: the water still tests hard, will not feel slippery, and glass can still spot. No salt, no drain, no outlet. Not for a tankless water heater, and not over about 25 grains: for most homes Aidan recommends the softener pair above. 1.5 for 2 to 4 people (1 to 2 bathrooms), 2.0 for 3 to 5 (2 to 3), 2.5 for 4 to 7 (3 to 4).

Filter + softener, filter + salt-free, or one tank
| Best for | Price | Hard water | Drain and outlet | Upkeep | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Filter + softener | Chlorine or chloramine, and hard water you want soft | $2,595 to $4,395 | Removed: the water tests soft | The softener needs both; the carbon tank needs neither | Carbon about every 4 to 5 years; softener salt |
| Filter + salt-free conditioner | Chlorine or chloramine, and scale up to about 25 grains, where salt or a drain is not an option | $3,895 to $4,795 | Kept from forming scale; the water still tests hard | Neither tank | Carbon about every 4 to 5 years; SP3 about every 3 years, by Aidan's plan |
| Carbon tank alone | Chlorine or chloramine on water under about 7 grains | From $1,295 | Not treated | Neither | Carbon about every 4 to 5 years |
| Softener alone | Hard water with no chlorine, chloramine, taste or smell | From $1,495 | Removed | Both | Softener salt |
Prices checked against our store on November 5, 2026. The four filter + softener packages cost $195 to $495 less than the same two tanks bought separately.
Salt: about one 40 lb bag every 30 to 45 days in Aidan's house. Media lives are Aidan's estimates; Watch Water rates SP3 at 5 to 7 years.
When you need the filter and the softener

A pool taste or smell, plus white scale and spots
Chlorine or chloramine and hard water, the usual pair on city water. The carbon tank goes first, then the softener or the salt-free conditioner.

Only the chlorine taste or smell, and soft water
Under about 7 grains of hardness you do not need the softener. A carbon tank alone fixes the taste and smell.

Only scale and spots, with no chlorine taste or smell
That is hard water alone. A softener by itself fixes it and costs less than any pair.

On a private well, with orange stains, low pH or a rotten egg smell
Iron fouls softener resin. Test first: iron, manganese or sulfur take an iron filter ahead of the softener (packages from $3,995); low pH takes an acid neutralizer (from $3,095).

Two tanks, carbon first
Plumber time for a filter + softener, about $700 to $1,000 by Aidan's estimate.
Plumber time for a filter + salt-free pair: no drain line, no outlet.
Phone support. Aidan helps your plumber with the setup.
What to have ready
- Room on the main lineFor two tanks side by side, plus the brine tank on a softener pair, after the main shutoff and before the water heater.
- A drain and an outlet (softener pair only)A floor drain, standpipe or utility sink reached with 1/2 inch tubing and an air gap, and a standard outlet for the softener's valve. The tubing is not included. The salt-free pair needs neither.
- Your hardnessFrom your water report or a hardness test, so Aidan can confirm the size and your plumber can set the softener.
What your plumber does
- Your plumber shuts off the water and sets the carbon tank first on the main line, then the softener or conditioner, before the water heater.
- Pours the carbon into the carbon tank, and the resin or the Filtersorb SP3 into the second tank, through the fill funnel.
- Plumbs the main line through both valves. On a softener pair, runs a 1/2 inch drain line with an air gap from the softener to the drain, connects the brine line and plugs in the valve.
- Sets the softener: time of day, hardness and capacity. Aidan can walk your plumber through the settings by phone.
- Turns the water back on slowly and checks every fitting for drips.
