How We Size an Iron Filter (The 30-Second Version)

Here is exactly how we size a system when you call in. We look at three things, in this order:

  1. Your iron level (in parts per million, from a water test)
  2. How many people live in the house
  3. How many bathrooms you have (because six people and three bathrooms means everyone can be showering at the same time, and that peak flow matters)

Then we ask one more question that most sellers skip: what is your well's flow rate? That number decides whether a bigger tank is even an option, because every air injection iron filter has to backwash to clean the trapped iron out of the media bed, and backwashing a big tank takes serious water flow.

The 4 Factors That Determine Your Size

After 32 years of sizing iron filters over the phone, these are the four things that matter, in the order we actually check them:

1. Your Iron Level (First Thing We Look At)

Iron is measured in parts per million (ppm) on a water test. The higher the iron, the harder the media bed works between backwash cycles, and the more capacity you want in the tank. Around 3 to 5 ppm with low water usage, the 1.5 cubic foot handles it. At 5 to 10 ppm, or even higher, we recommend the 2.5 cubic foot. Not sure what type of iron you have? 2. Number of People in the Home

More people means more gallons through the media bed every day, which consumes capacity faster. As a rule: 1.5 cubic foot for 2 to 4 people with lower iron, 2.5 cubic foot for anywhere from 4 to 10 people. The 2.5 covers just about any size house.

3. Number of Bathrooms (Peak Flow)

People ask whether it's about the iron level or the bathrooms. It's a combination. Bathrooms set your peak flow rate: if six people live in the house with three bathrooms, everyone can be showering at the same time getting ready for work or school. The filter has to keep up with that simultaneous demand without letting untreated water slip through, so more bathrooms push you toward a larger tank.

4. Your Well's Flow Rate (The Veto Power)

This is the factor that works in reverse. A bigger tank holds more media, and more media takes more water to lift and rinse during backwash. The 3.5 cubic foot unit needs roughly 15 gallons per minute to backwash correctly. Most residential wells put out 8 to 10 GPM, which backwashes the 2.5 cubic foot perfectly and keeps the tank clean. If your well only produces 5 GPM, the biggest tank is off the table no matter how big your house is.

Why Well Flow Rate Can Veto a Bigger Tank

People ask: "Is there any downside to buying the biggest one, just to have the coverage and be safe?" With iron filters, yes, and it's a big one.

An air injection iron filter cleans itself by backwashing: the valve reverses flow, lifts the Katalox Light media bed, and flushes the trapped iron down the drain. Lifting 3.5 cubic feet of media takes roughly 15 gallons per minute of sustained flow. If your well can't deliver that, the bed never fully lifts, the trapped iron never fully rinses out, and the media fouls: it cakes into channels and clumps, and the filter stops removing iron.

Fixing a fouled bed means disconnecting the tank, hauling it outside, dumping the media, cleaning everything, and starting over with new media. On a 65 inch tall tank that weighs several hundred pounds loaded, that is not a job you want.

Most residential wells produce right around 8 to 10 GPM. That backwashes the 2.5 cubic foot correctly, keeps the tank clean, and eliminates iron from the household water supply. This is exactly why the 2.5 is our recommendation on nearly every call: it is the largest tank that a typical well can actually maintain.

Rule of thumb: size the tank to your household, then check it against your well. If the well can't backwash the size your household suggests, drop one size. A correctly backwashed 2.5 will always outperform a fouled 3.5.

What Happens If You Buy Too Small

The opposite mistake has its own failure mode. An undersized iron filter gets overwhelmed by iron, and you get bleed-through: partially treated water carrying dissolved iron past the media bed and into your plumbing. You'll see it as orange staining that comes back in toilets, tubs, and laundry even though you "have an iron filter."

Bleed-through shows up when a small tank faces some combination of high iron (over 5 ppm), lots of people, and high peak flow (several bathrooms running at once). The water simply moves through the media bed faster than the media can treat it.

If you're between two sizes and your well flow supports the bigger one, take the bigger one. The extra media gives you more contact time, more capacity between backwashes, and a media bed that lasts longer: the 2.5 cubic foot bed typically runs a little better than 6 to 8 years before a media change.

Real Sizing Examples

Scenario 1: Two People, Two Bathrooms, Moderate Iron

Situation: 1-2 bathrooms, two people in the house, iron testing at 3 to 5 ppm.

Recommendation: The 1.5 cubic foot is pretty much all you need. If you want a longer media life and fewer maintenance events, stepping up to the 2.5 buys you a bed that lasts a little better than 6 to 8 years.

Scenario 2: Family of Four, Three Bathrooms, High Iron

Situation: Four people, three bathrooms, high water usage, iron anywhere from 5 to 10 ppm or even higher.

Recommendation: The 2.5 cubic foot, every time. This is the configuration we recommend on nearly every call, and it's what 99% of customers purchase.

Scenario 3: Irrigation Running Off the Well

Situation: Customers in different parts of the country run yard irrigation systems off the same well that feeds the house.

Recommendation: The 3.5 cubic foot most of the time. Depending on how big the irrigation field is, sometimes you can get away with the 2.5. The deciding factor is total daily gallons plus whether the well can sustain the 3.5's backwash flow.

Scenario 4: Big House, Weak Well (5 GPM)

Situation: A customer asked whether he could run the biggest tank on a well that only puts out 5 gallons per minute.

Recommendation: No. The 3.5 cannot backwash on 5 GPM and the media bed will foul. On a 5 GPM well, the 1.5 cubic foot (or the 1.0 low-profile) is the right call, sized to what the well can actually clean.

Common Sizing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

Mistake #1: "Bigger Is Safer"

True for acid neutralizers, false for iron filters. An oversized iron filter on an average well can't backwash correctly, and a fouled media bed removes less iron than a smaller, properly maintained one. Match the tank to the well.

Mistake #2: Sizing Without a Water Test

Mistake #3: Ignoring the Well's Flow Rate

Nobody thinks about their well's output until the filter won't backwash. Before buying anything above 2.5 cubic feet, get your flow rate measured (a well company can do it, or run a bucket test off the outdoor spigot). It's the difference between a system that runs 6 to 8 years and one you're hauling outside to dump.

Mistake #4: Counting Only People, Not Bathrooms

Six people with three bathrooms can all shower simultaneously. That peak flow moment is when an undersized filter bleeds iron through. Count bathrooms as well as heads.
