Iron filters backwash because the media bed physically traps oxidized iron, and that trapped iron has to be flushed to a drain before it fouls the tank. The filter gathers iron and holds it in place during normal operation, then periodically reverses the flow of water to lift the media, wash the captured iron out through a drain line, and reset the bed for its next period of service. What Backwashing Actually Does
An air injection iron filter works in two stages. First, a pocket of air at the top of the tank oxidizes dissolved (ferrous) iron into solid (ferric) particles. Second, the Katalox Light media bed catches those particles and holds them, along with manganese and sulfur, so they never reach your faucets. The catch is that the media bed fills up. Backwashing is the cleaning cycle: the valve reverses the flow of water through the tank, lifting and tumbling the media, flushing the captured iron out through the drain line, and drawing in a fresh air pocket. The system then returns to service with a clean bed. It is the same self-cleaning principle a backwashing sediment or carbon filter uses, but for iron it is not optional.

Backwash frequency is based on usage, and for iron removal it needs to happen every day or every other day. The valve is programmed for your household so the bed never sits loaded with iron long enough to foul.

If a product is marketed as an iron filter with neither, it is a cartridge filter, and cartridges plug quickly on real iron problems.

Is Backwash Discharge Safe for a Septic System?
Yes, provided your septic system is in good working condition. The discharge is well water plus the iron that came out of that same well; there are no chemicals, salts, or regenerants involved in an air injection system. Why There Is No Non-Backwashing Iron Filter
