Why the Fleck valve: I've had both the Fleck and the Clack in my own home. What size softener do you need?
The size comes from two numbers: your hardness in grains per gallon, and how many people live in the house. I tell people that once you get to 10 grains and above, you should definitely put a water softener in, whether it's well water or city water. A little over 4 in 10 of the lab tests my customers send in come back at 7 grains or harder.

To check the math yourself: multiply the people in the house by 75 gallons a day, then by your grains per gallon. That is how many grains the softener removes each day. Multiply by 7 for a week, and pick the size that covers about a week. For 4 people at 12 grains, that is 4 x 75 x 12 = 3,600 grains a day, or 25,200 a week. A 32,000 would do it; the 48,000 regenerates less often.
Bigger is not always better on a well
A bigger softener has to backwash less often and uses less salt; I tell people that all the time. On a well there is a limit. The larger you go with tanks, the greater the backwash flow is needed, and most of the average wells, home wells don't have the backwash flow needed for those larger tanks. That is what I told a horse farm in Michigan this May at 32 grains, looking at a 100,000 grain unit: "We have 48Ks in houses with 7 to 10 people using tons of water every day, and it's fine." If one softener is not enough, I would add a second one rather than go huge. An Iowa family of 4 on a well at 34 grains asked this month about stepping up from the 64,000 to the 80,000. My answer: "No, you're fine. 64 is plenty."
Get your hardness number first
One certified lab test, mailed to you, run by an accredited lab, reports hardness, iron, manganese and pH from one sample: the numbers that decide the size and what goes ahead of the softener. If you already have a lab report, skip this.
What goes before the softener on a well
A softener takes out hardness and a little iron. More iron than it is rated for, a rotten egg smell, or low pH each need their own treatment ahead of the softener. Of the hard wells my customers have had lab-tested, about one in eight also has more than 1 ppm of iron, which is more than the 48,000 is rated for.
Can a water softener remove iron from your well water? Yes, at low levels. But over time, the iron passing through the resin bed does shorten the life of the resin, and we usually recommend a dedicated iron filter. The New York caller at the top of this page has iron and sulfur. I told him, "You're not supposed to use a softener for iron, because it weakens the resin over time." His iron and sulfur filter goes first, and the water goes through the softener after that.

The softener goes after any acid neutralizer or iron filter; only a UV light goes after it. Everything ahead of it protects the resin.
- Well pressure tank. Every filter goes after it.
- Sediment filter. A 5 micron cartridge catches sand and grit before they reach any valve.

Single tank or twin tank?
A single tank softener sends hard water to the house for 60 to 90 minutes while it recharges, typically at 2 AM. A twin tank has two resin tanks. When one runs out, the valve switches to the other, so you have soft water around the clock.
The twin tank is built for homes that cannot have that hard water window. The 9100SXT 64,000 fits 4 to 8 people with 3 to 5 bathrooms at $2,695, which is $700 more than the 48,000 single tank. Do salt-free softeners soften water?
Salt-free conditioners don't actually soften the water; they don't remove hardness. They convert the dissolved hardness to a crystal, and the crystal can't attach itself to the plumbing and the water-using appliances. It just rinses away when you're taking a shower, running the dishwasher, or doing laundry.

It does not give you the slick feel of softened water or better soap lather, and any iron over 0.3 ppm coats its media and ruins it, so on many wells it is the wrong choice. In a 2020 review, one buyer who had switched from a salt softener to that conditioner gave it 2 stars: "The water is not as soft as the water was when we had our salt water softener." He also wrote that it cost 2 times the price of a salt system.
How much salt does it use?
My 48,000 grain unit at home uses 6 lb of salt per regeneration, so every 30 to 45 days I add a 40 lb bag of pellets. I get them from Walmart for eight bucks a bag. As far as maintenance, there's not a whole lot you have to do: keep two or three bags of salt in the salt tank and you're good to go.
How long does the water softener resin last?
I've seen resin last for 40 years. That was an existing system in a customer's house, and we were adding a new system with updated electronics. Resin lasts that long if it's protected from iron, if you're on well water, and protected from chlorine on city water. If yours does wear out, replacement 10% crosslink resin is $295 a cubic foot.
What comes in the box
What ships: the resin tank, the Fleck control valve with the bypass valve pre-installed, the salt tank, and the resin in separate bags. The resin is loaded into the tank at install, usually through the included fill funnel. Every tank ships empty, because a loaded tank is too heavy to ship without damage.
Drain tubing is not included. The valve needs 1/2 inch tubing to a floor drain, laundry sink, sump or standpipe within 20 feet, and a standard outlet within 6 feet. It connects to 1 inch pipe, or 3/4 inch with adapters.
