Why Your Water Tastes Like Metal (Copper vs Iron, and How to Tell)
A metallic taste in well water almost always comes down to one of two things: dissolved copper from acidic water eating your pipes, or iron coming out of the well itself. Here is how to figure out which one you have and exactly what fixes each.

The Two Causes of Metallic-Tasting Water
After 32 years of taking these calls, when someone says "my water tastes like metal," it is one of two things nearly every time:
- Copper from your own plumbing. If your well water is acidic (low pH), it slowly dissolves the copper pipes it flows through. That dissolved copper is what you taste. The water left the well tasting fine; your plumbing is adding the metal.
- Iron from the well itself. Iron is one of the most common minerals in groundwater. Even at levels below 1 part per million, dissolved iron gives water a distinct metallic, sometimes bitter taste. Here the water arrives at your house already tasting like metal.
The distinction matters because the two problems have completely different fixes. An iron filter does nothing for acidic water, and an acid neutralizer does not remove meaningful amounts of iron. Treating the wrong one wastes real money.
How to Tell Copper from Iron
You cannot reliably tell them apart by taste. But your fixtures usually give the answer away before any test does:

The honest answer: beyond a visual inspection, the only way to know for sure is a proper water test. Rust-colored water leans iron, but plenty of homes have both problems at once, and only the numbers tell you that.

Pre-1986 home? Test for lead too.
If your home was built before 1986 and has acidic well water, the copper pipes were typically joined with lead solder. The same low pH that dissolves copper also dissolves that lead into your drinking water, and lead has no safe level according to the EPA. Step One: Test the Water (Cheap Screen or Certified Lab)
There are two sensible ways to do this, and they serve different purposes:

A basic test strip kit from Lowe's, Home Depot, or Amazon will tell you fairly accurately what your pH is and whether you have iron in the well water. As a first screen, that is genuinely useful: pH in the 5s with no iron points at copper; iron showing up with a neutral pH points at the well.
The real answer: a certified lab test
Strips will not measure copper or lead, and their iron reading is a rough range at best. Before anyone spends $1,500 to $2,500 on treatment equipment, the numbers should come from a lab. The Fix for Iron: Air-Injection Iron Filter
If your test comes back with high iron (say 10 parts per million, which we see regularly in well country), the best treatment is a Fleck 2510AIO 2.5 cubic foot Katalox Light system ($2,495 shipped). It uses an air pocket at the top of the tank to oxidize dissolved iron, then catches the oxidized particles in Katalox Light catalytic media. No chemicals, no salt, and it handles iron up to 30 ppm along with manganese and sulfur odor.

The Fix for Acidic Water: Calcite Acid Neutralizer
If your test shows acidic water, for example a pH of 5.5, the fix is a Clack 2.5 cubic foot non-backwashing upflow acid neutralizer (from $1,495). Water flows up through a bed of calcite, a natural crushed limestone, which dissolves just enough mineral into the water to bring the pH back to neutral. No chemicals, no electricity, no drain line. Once the pH is corrected, the water stops dissolving copper from your pipes and the metallic taste goes away at the source.

The neutralizer consumes its media by design (the calcite dissolves into the water to raise pH), so topping it off is normal, not a failure. Can You Install It Yourself?
Customers ask this constantly, and the honest answer is: if you have basic mechanical skills, yes. Both systems are single-tank units that tie into your main line, and we walk DIY installers through it over the phone at no charge. Frequently Asked Questions
Is metallic-tasting water safe to drink?
It depends on the cause. Iron at typical well levels is an aesthetic problem, not a health hazard. Copper above the EPA action level of 1.3 ppm can cause stomach upset and is a real concern for infants. And if low pH is dissolving copper in a pre-1986 home, lead from solder joints may be present too, which is unsafe at any level. Test before assuming either way.
How do I know if the metallic taste is copper or iron?
Look at your stains first: blue-green stains mean copper from acidic water, orange or rust stains mean iron. Then confirm with a water test that measures pH, copper, and iron. Taste alone cannot distinguish them, and some homes have both problems at once.
Will a carbon filter or fridge filter fix a metallic taste?
Not reliably. Carbon is excellent for chlorine, taste, and odor from organic compounds, but it does not correct pH and it is not designed to remove dissolved iron or copper at whole-house levels. Fixing a metallic taste means treating the cause: an acid neutralizer for low pH or an iron filter for iron.
Does a metallic taste mean I have lead in my water?
Not necessarily, but the conditions overlap. Lead itself is tasteless. The concern is that the same acidic water that creates a copper taste also dissolves lead solder in homes built before 1986. If your home is that age and your pH is low, include lead in your water test.
