Where to Buy a Water Softener (2026): Lowe's vs Home Depot vs Menards vs Costco vs Sam's Club vs Online

Stores sell softeners three ways. Home Depot, Lowe's and Menards sell a cabinet softener off the shelf for about $480 to $720, and you or your plumber put it in. Home Depot, Lowe's and Costco also send someone to your house for a free water test, and that visit ends in an installed-system quote, often several thousand dollars. And online specialists like us sell a standard softener (one tall resin tank with the control valve on top, and a separate salt tank beside it) on a Fleck valve for $1,495 to $2,995, sized over the phone. On city water with a small household and no iron, the shelf unit is a fair buy. Here is what each store actually offers this month.

Every store at a glance

The three home centers sell the same kind of softener, an all-in-one cabinet unit with the resin tank built into the salt tank, for about $480 to $720. Every price below is from the store's own site on October 26, 2026. Prices move, and Lowe's shows a price only after you pick a store, so treat these as the neighborhood.

The Whirlpool at Lowe's, the Rheem at Home Depot and the Morton at Menards all come from one maker, Water Channel Partners, so comparing them is comparing sizes and prices, not factories. Our big-box softener comparison covers who makes which one and how long each lasts.

What Home Depot sells

Home Depot sells softeners two ways: a box off the shelf that you or your plumber install, or a free in-home water test that ends in a dealer's quote.

The shelf. The Rheem Preferred 32,000 grain is $489, a Home Depot exclusive sized for households of up to 4 people. The Rheem 42,000 grain with Wi-Fi is $689, the GE 40,200 grain is $497 and the Aquasure Harmony 48,000 grain is $699.99. Returns are 90 days. The dealer visit. Home Depot's EcoWater listing says to "get a quote during a free consultation": a local water pro tests your water at home and quotes a system. There is no shelf price. Shoppers on that same listing posted what they were quoted: $8,000 for a softener and reverse osmosis in August 2026, and $8,795 for a softener, reverse osmosis and an air filtration unit in January 2026.

In July a caller from Texas, on hard city water, told me she had bought an $8,500 salt-free system from a Home Depot salesperson, and the installer was coming that afternoon. I told her I would not put much trust in Home Depot water treatment. Years ago, when we were a service company, we did some installs for Home Depot, and parts, ongoing service and tech support were hard to get. What installing it costs. A plumber putting in a standard softener takes about 2 to 3 hours, and that usually runs about $800. Planning the drain line is the part that takes thought; the steps are in how to install a water softener.

What Lowe's sells

Lowe's is the Whirlpool store: the Whirlpool softeners are Lowe's exclusives, and A. O. Smith and Aquasure fill out the shelf. Lowe's shows softener prices only after you choose a store, so this page quotes no Lowe's price.

The Whirlpool WHES33 has 33,000 grains, 0.88 cubic feet of resin, rated for 1 to 4+ people and up to 9 ppm of clear-water iron. Read its warranty card twice. Whirlpool covers 1 year of full parts and labor, 3 years on the electronics and 10 years on the tank, and the 1 year stretches to 5 only if you use Whirlpool's softener cleanser.

Who installs a Lowe's softener. Lowe's has two services, both done by independent installers who are licensed, insured and background checked, with a 1-year labor warranty:

1. Softener replacement. The installer takes out your old softener and puts in a Whirlpool. It is only for replacing a softener you already have, because the installer uses your existing plumbing and power.
2. Custom water treatment. A free in-home water analysis, then a "personalized solution tailored to your needs and budget". That is the same kind of visit as Home Depot's, with a quote at the end.

Returns are 90 days on new, unused merchandise, or 365 days on a Lowe's credit card. Labor and installation charges are not refundable.

What Menards sells

Menards sells Morton, WaterBoss and Aquasure softeners from $479.99, with an 11% rebate. Menards has 341 stores in 15 states, mostly in the Midwest, so it is only an option if one is near you.

This month the Morton 27,000 grain is $479.99, the Morton 34,000 grain $519.99, the WaterBoss ProPlus 40,000 grain $619.99, the Aquasure Harmony 48,000 grain $659.99 and the Morton 45,000 grain with Wi-Fi $719.99. Before the rebate, that is the same money as the Rheem at Home Depot.

The rebate is not cash. It comes back as a rebate credit check, good only on future purchases in a Menards store. On the Morton 27,000 grain that is $52.80, so it nets about $427 if you shop there anyway. Menards' WaterBoss page points buyers to WaterBoss's own install videos. I recommend having a plumber put it in.

What Costco offers

Costco's softener program is a referral to a local EcoWater dealer, with a 10% Costco Shop Card on a qualifying installed system. The dealer tests your water at home, sets the price and installs it, so you are buying from EcoWater, not from Costco.

The Shop Card is worth having, but it is 10% of a dealer price. Dealers like Culligan, RainSoft and EcoWater have high overhead and charge about $3,000 to $4,000 for a softener alone. The documented Costco quotes, and what is inside an EcoWater refiner, are in EcoWater systems cost.

Buying a softener online

Online, the choice is between a marketplace like Amazon and a specialist that sells name-brand valves at published prices.

Amazon. My advice is not to buy water treatment on Amazon. It sells good products in other departments, but what customers tell us is that you usually can't get good support or parts afterward. More in buying an Amazon water filter.

A specialist. That is what we are. Our softeners run $1,495 for the Fleck 5600SXT 32,000 grain, $1,995 for the 48,000 grain and up to $2,995 for the 80,000 grain twin-tank Fleck 9100SXT, shipped from our manufacturer in Ohio. I size them by phone from your hardness and how many people live in the house. Fleck is the valve I rate number one, because parts and tech support are easy to get anywhere; Clack is number two.

What you are paying for is the parts. On any softener, look at four things: the tank, the resin, the valve and the bypass. Ours is a Vortech tank, a Fleck 5600SXT digital valve, a stainless steel bypass and, on the 48,000 grain, 10% crosslink resin. The chart shows the other difference you can measure: how much resin, the part that does the softening, is inside.

Where we sit. We sell the online kind, so we gain if you skip the shelf and the dealer. That is why I say it plainly: on easy city water with a small household, the Home Depot, Lowe's or Menards unit is a reasonable buy. And if you already own a working one, my answer is run it till it dies. Years ago we were a contractor for one of the big-box stores putting these in, and they are not junk.

Which store fits your water?

Start with two numbers: your hardness and your iron. In the water tests my customers send in, about one home in three with hard water also has iron over 0.3 ppm (45 of 137).

For size, most households use the 48,000 or 64,000 grain unit; what size water softener you need has the math. If you don't know your numbers, a home test kit from Lowe's or Home Depot runs about $25 and checks pH, hardness and iron at the kitchen sink. Where to buy softener salt

Buy softener salt at any store near you; a 40 to 44 pound bag of plain pellets runs about $6.50 to $9.90. I get mine at Walmart and use plain pellet salt.

This month Sam's Club lists Morton Clean and Protect pellets at $6.48 for 44 pounds, and Home Depot lists Diamond Crystal pellets at $8.88 for 40 pounds ($7.99 each for 10 or more) and Morton pellets at $9.88. With a softener my size, one 40 pound bag lasts about 30 to 45 days.

Buy pipe fittings at a home center
