Where to Buy a Water Softener (2026): Lowe's vs Home Depot vs Menards vs Costco vs Sam's Club vs Online

You need a softener. The question is where to buy it. I have installed the shelf units as a big-box contractor, replaced the dealer systems, and I sell the online kind. Here is what each store actually hands you, with the prices and policies I could verify this month.

The Store-by-Store Scorecard

Everything here came from the retailer's own site or documents, checked September 2026 unless another month is noted. Prices move weekly, and several stores only show a price after you pick a location, so read the dollar figures as the neighborhood.

Lowe's, Home Depot, and Menards are the shelf. Home Depot and Costco (and, less visibly, Lowe's) are also a dealer channel with a retailer's name on the flyer. Nobody on the shelf side sizes the unit to your water, because nobody in the aisle knows your hardness number.

Lowe's: The Deepest Softener Shelf in Big-Box Retail

If you are buying a cabinet softener off a shelf, Lowe's has the most to choose from: Whirlpool, A.O. Smith, Aquasure, Pro+Aqua, Pentair, NuvoH2O (a salt-free conditioner, a different product), and APEC. Three matter most.

• Whirlpool is Lowe's anchor brand; Whirlpool does not sell softeners direct. Per Lowe's own Whirlpool buying guide, the lineup is the WHES33 (33,000 grain, 1 to 4 people), the WHES44, and the Pro Series. In July 2026 the WHES33 sat at $550 to $650.
• A.O. Smith is a Lowe's exclusive. Per A.O. Smith's Lowe's microsite, the line is a 35,000-grain compact, a 40,000, and a 45,000 with Wi-Fi salt alerts. Trackers put the larger two near $550 to $650; I could not confirm that on lowes.com. A.O. Smith owns Hague, which builds WaterBoss, so this is the other cabinet platform on the shelf.
• Aquasure is the value play. The Harmony Lite 32,000-grain lists at $393.88 with a 5-year warranty. The two-tank Harmony 64,000-grain is also stocked.

Warranty: read the Whirlpool card twice

The WHES30/WHES33 warranty is one year, full. It stretches to five only if you use Whirlpool WHE-WSC cleaner every four months and keep every receipt. The Pro Series carries 3 years on electronics, 10 on tanks, 1 year parts and labor, extendable to 10 with the same routine.

The cleaner genuinely helps the venturi and resin, so this is not a trick. But you are buying a maintenance subscription to keep coverage on a $600 machine. A.O. Smith's microsite and corporate page also disagree on the 450T warranty (5/10 versus 3/10). Check the card in your box.

Who installs a Lowe's softener?

Lowe's does, through its install program: independent licensed installers, priced after an in-home assessment, one-year labor warranty, no published flat fee. The unit's warranty stays with the manufacturer. If you already trust a plumber, calling them directly usually costs less.

Returns and salt

Returns are 90 days on new, unused merchandise, 365 with a Lowe's card. "Unused" is the operative word once it is plumbed in and full of brine. Morton and Diamond Crystal 40-pound bags are in every store, priced by location.

My take on Lowe's: for a shelf purchase, this is the store. Two cabinet platforms to compare, a budget option, a fair return window. What Lowe's cannot do is tell you what size you need or whether an iron filter comes first.

Home Depot: Two Very Different Purchases Under One Roof

Home Depot sells softeners two completely different ways, and the store does not go out of its way to explain the difference.

Door one: the shelf

The shelf is GE and Rheem, plus Aquasure, WaterBoss, and iSpring online. The GE GXSH40V (40,000 grain, about 1.1 cubic feet of resin) was $497 in July 2026, usually the cheapest 40K cabinet unit in any store.

Rheem is a Home Depot exclusive, about $489 to $689 per a third-party tracker in July 2026. Aquasure runs about $605 to $689 for the 48,000-grain Harmony, up to the 70,000-grain at $869.99. Returns are 90 days new and unopened, 365 with a Home Depot card.

Door two: the Water Treatment Install Program

Past the shelf you will find a kiosk or a flyer offering a free in-home water test. That is Home Depot's Water Treatment Install Program, and it is not a Home Depot product. Per the program flyer, an EcoWater dealer (a "Home Depot Authorized Water Specialist") or a RainSoft dealer tests your water and recommends a system.

The RainSoft EC4 listing has no price; it says to get a quote during a free consultation. That is the tell. Third-party cost guides report $2,500 to $6,500 installed, which matches what we hear, and it can go well past that.

A homeowner in Texas called us this summer, on hard city water, after buying a salt-free conditioner from a salesperson met through Home Depot. The contract said $8,500 and did not state what the unit was. The installer was arriving that afternoon. That is the failure mode of door two: a dealer's price and contract with a big-box logo on the flyer, and no returns desk.

My take on Home Depot: a fine place to buy the GE off the shelf, and a confusing place to buy a softener if you do not realize the free water test is a sales appointment.

Menards: The Cheapest Net Price, Strictly DIY

Menards operates in about 15 Midwestern states. If you are in its footprint, the shelf prices are the lowest in this article before the rebate, and lower still after it.

Per Menards' softener category and its 2026 weekly ads: the Morton 27,000-grain at $399.96, a Morton 34,000-grain at $417.99, a Morton Wi-Fi 45,000-grain at $577.96, the WaterBoss ProPlus 40,000-grain at $489.49, plus Aquasure and EcoPure.

Morton and EcoPure come from the same Woodbury, Minnesota platform as Whirlpool and NorthStar (the family tree is in the big-box brand article); WaterBoss is Hague-built. A Morton 34K at $418 is the same class of machine as a Whirlpool WHES33 at $550 to $650. That gap is Menards' whole pitch.

Then the 11% rebate. It comes back as an in-store credit check, not cash, and it is deducted if you return the item. For a regular Menards shopper, the Morton 34K nets out near $372.

Install and returns: I found no softener install program; the WaterBoss listing points to DIY videos. Returns are 90 days to your original payment, store credit after. Online orders shipped back pay return shipping plus a 25% restocking fee, so buy in the store.

One call from our line: a well-water homeowner in North Carolina asked about "the Boss" softener Menards sells. Aidan's answer was that WaterBoss is a legitimate compact unit built by Hague but "nothing special," and that on a well the iron question decides everything before the brand does.

My take on Menards: if you are handy, on city water, and in the Midwest, this is the cheapest working softener you can carry out of a store. It is also the store least able to help if it goes wrong.

Costco: Mostly a Dealer Referral With a Membership Card

Costco does not stock a pallet of softeners next to the water heaters. The main offering is an EcoWater referral program: a dealer tests your water at home, quotes, installs, and you receive a 10% Costco Shop Card afterward. Equipment and price are dealer-grade. An owner on r/WaterTreatment who went through the Costco appointment this year posted a quote of $5,665 for an EcoWater ERR3700 softener-refiner plus an ERO175 reverse osmosis unit, after rebates. The Shop Card is real money, but 10% of $5,600 is $560, and the same grain capacity in a professional two-tank system is $1,995 before your plumber.

Warehouses sometimes stock a boxed cabinet softener, seasonally and unpredictably. A price tracker logged a Morton Premium 30,000-grain (item 1018160) at $399.99 in July 2026, out of stock when we checked. It is the same Woodbury cabinet platform as the Menards Morton, and Costco's satisfaction guarantee covers it. Dealer-installed systems do not get that guarantee; they go through the vendor's warranty.

My take on Costco: a legitimate way to buy a dealer system if turnkey is what you want. Just know you are buying from EcoWater's dealer, not from Costco, and price it before the appointment. A boxed Morton at $400 is a good shelf-unit price.

Sam's Club and Tractor Supply: Buy Your Salt Here, Not Your Softener

Sam's Club

Sam's Club is a salt store that occasionally has a softener. A GE GXSF30H listing showed no price and "not available in your selected club" when we checked; a Morton unit reviewed in 2023 is gone. What Sam's reliably has is Morton pellets, 44 pounds for $8.69, about 20 cents a pound.

Returns fall under the 100% Satisfaction Guarantee, 90 days on major appliances. A softener you happen to find in your club is the same cabinet class as everything else here. Do not plan a trip around it.

Tractor Supply

As of September 2026, tractorsupply.com lists no whole-house softeners. What it has is the cheapest verified salt in this article: Diamond Crystal Bright and Soft 40 lb pellets at $6.99, Solar Naturals crystals, and Iron Fighter pellets at $9.49 for wells with a little clear iron. Buy the salt here. Buy the softener somewhere else.

Buying Online: Amazon vs Specialists

Amazon is a marketplace: Aquasure and iSpring cabinet units, and assembled Fleck 5600SXT systems from third-party resellers. Prices swing weekly, the seller is often not the manufacturer, warranty registration gets murky, and returning a 100-pound freight item is on you.

It is a fine place to buy a venturi kit or a bypass valve. It is a mediocre place to buy a softener, and the worst place here to buy salt: a 40-pound bag of Morton routinely sells for $20 or more, about three times the store price. More in Buying an Amazon Water Filter.

Direct specialists

The other path is a specialist that sells professional-grade hardware direct, at published prices, and sizes it for you. That is what we do; a few other companies do too (named in our brands comparison). The hardware differs from the shelf: separate resin and brine tanks, an industry-standard Fleck or Clack valve any water tech can service, 10% crosslink resin, 5-year valve and 10-year tank warranties.

Our live prices this month: the Fleck 5600SXT 32,000-grain at $1,495, the 48,000-grain with 10% crosslink resin at $1,995, and the 64,000-grain twin-tank at $2,695. Versus the shelf, about three times the price for roughly double the life. Versus the dealer program, you supply the installer and the same grain capacity costs a third to a half.

Where we sit in this comparison

Mid Atlantic Water is door three, so we benefit if you decide against the shelf or the dealer program. That is why this article concedes real ground: on easy city water with a small household, the Lowe's or Menards unit is a rational buy, and we say so on the phone. Years ago we installed these cabinet units under contract for a big-box chain. They are not junk.

Softener Salt: Who Has It and What It Costs

Every home center and warehouse club stocks 40-pound bags of pellet salt, mostly Morton and Diamond Crystal, and stores differ by a dollar or two a bag. Buy plain pellets; the "rust defense" and "clean and protect" blends cost more and mostly matter with a little clear iron.

Verified in September 2026: Tractor Supply at $6.99 for 40 pounds of Diamond Crystal, Sam's Club at $8.69 for 44 pounds of Morton, and Walmart at $8.76 for 40 pounds of Morton Clean and Protect.

Home Depot and Lowe's price by store, about $8 a bag, with a Home Depot discount at six or more. Menards is the same, with the 11% rebate. Costco is often cheapest when a warehouse carries it. Amazon runs $20 or more.

Aidan's standing advice to new softener owners: two 40-pound bags to start, from whichever of Walmart, Lowe's, or Home Depot is closest. Salt is a $7 to $9 commodity at any physical store. The one place not to buy it is online.

What You Are Actually Buying Through Each Door

Strip the store names away and there are exactly three products in this whole article.

The shelf cannot give you sizing (a "1 to 4 people" tag assumes average hardness and no iron), serviceability (most plumbers will not open a cabinet unit's valve, so at year 7 it goes to the curb), or a second opinion. The dealer program gives you all three at a dealer price. The specialist gives you sizing and serviceability, and asks you to bring the installer.

When the Big-Box Buy Is the Right Call (and When It Isn't)

For a lot of homes, the shelf unit is the right purchase. I have told callers that hundreds of times. Here is the line.

The two numbers that decide everything are hardness and iron. A certified lab well water test (or the city water version) gives you both, plus pH and 40-plus other parameters, for $199. Aidan reads the results with you by phone at no charge.

Rather start cheaper? Do what Aidan tells most first-time callers: pick up a $20 to $25 hardness, iron, and pH test kit at Lowe's or Home Depot, run it, and text him the numbers at 443-277-2204. Sometimes the $500 unit is enough.

What Owners Report

We have not bench-tested every unit here. This comes from years of installing and servicing cabinet units as a big-box contractor, from callers describing the systems they are replacing, from store review pages, and from the ownership threads on r/Plumbing, r/WaterSofteners, and r/WaterTreatment.

• Shelf units on easy water last a long time. The top Reddit thread on whether Lowe's or Home Depot softeners are any good was started by an owner whose Lowe's Whirlpool was 12 years old and just starting to act up. Another 12-year WHES33 owner was told, accurately, "you got 12 years out of a throw-away system that typically does not last that long."
• The failures cluster around brine draw. An 8-year-old Whirlpool that "never draws down during regen," a 2-year-old WHES40E filling with water, a WHE33 owner who replaced the venturi, seal kit, and float and was still stuck. Same failure every time: a clogged nozzle-and-venturi assembly or a worn rotor seal. The parts are cheap. The diagnosis is what is missing, because the store sold the box and walked away.
• Dealer-program owners argue about the price, not the equipment. The Costco EcoWater threads and our own calls are one conversation: the system works, the install was clean, and the number was $5,000 to $8,500 for a hardware class that sells near $2,000 online. They wish they had itemized the quote.
• Our own customers use the big-box stores as a parts counter. A theme in our reviews: people who bought a Clack or Fleck system from us, then spent an afternoon at Home Depot or Lowe's hunting 1-inch fittings to plumb it in. That is the right way to use a big-box store. It is also fair feedback, and we have been adding fitting guidance to our install instructions because of it.
