The SoftPro Elite is a good softener from an honest online company. It costs less than my Fleck systems at every size. What you give up is a valve any plumber can rebuild, and a warranty that is narrower than its headline. Here is the full picture, with sources.

Quick Verdict: Is the SoftPro Elite a Good Water Softener?
Yes. The SoftPro Elite is legitimate, efficient, fairly priced hardware from a real company. Buying one online will save you thousands against a Culligan or Kinetico dealer quote.
- What it is: a metered softener on the Canature 89UF/DF control valve, set to regenerate upflow, with 1" ports and 10% crosslink resin. Sold in 32K to 64K grain sizes for $1,367 to $1,587 (city) or $1,327 to $1,477 (well) as of September 2026, shipping included.
- What upflow buys you: real but modest salt savings, about 15 to 25% less than a comparable downflow softener per independent engineering literature. SoftPro's "up to 75%" is measured against old timer-based softeners, not a modern metered Fleck or Clack.
- Read the fine print: the "lifetime" valve warranty excludes the piston, seals, spacers, and circuit board. Well-water resin carries no warranty. Iron or sulfur exposure can void coverage. Returns cost a 25% restocking fee plus return shipping.

Who SoftPro Is, and the Lineup in One Minute
SoftPro is the house brand of Quality Water Treatment, Inc. (QWT), a family-owned company in Box Elder, South Dakota, founded in 1990 by Craig Phillips. Per their product FAQ, systems are built and shipped from warehouses in Texas, Arizona, and Indiana. Support runs weekdays, 9 AM to 7 PM Central.
That should sound familiar. Mid Atlantic Water is also a family company selling professional-grade equipment online at published prices. We covered QWT's iron filter in our SoftPro IronMaster vs Fleck 2510 AIO comparison, and the same conclusion applies: a legitimate competitor, separated from us by philosophy, not honesty.
The Elite is their volume product and by far the most-searched SoftPro term. This page is for the person with an Elite in their cart who wants one more opinion before checkout.
The three tiers
The ECO is the entry model: 3/4" valve, 8% crosslink resin, 10-year valve warranty. The Elite HE, reviewed here, is the flagship: 1" valve, upflow regeneration, 10% crosslink resin. The Smart Home+ adds app monitoring and leak detection on the DROP platform. You may see "Elite Plus" in older reviews; the current storefront sells nothing by that name.
Two lineup facts matter. The Elite tops out at 64,000 grains in a single tank. A large household on very hard water needs their 96K twin-tank or, on our side, a Fleck 5600SXT 80K. And the well-water Elite looks identical to the city version, but its resin carries no warranty.
What Valve Is on the SoftPro Elite?
The control valve is the only moving, wearing part of a softener, so it is our first question about any softener. SoftPro's product page does not name the manufacturer. It describes an "advanced programmable control valve" with 1" ports and a "Built in USA" badge.
The paper trail is clear. QWT's own knowledge base files the Elite's programming articles under "SoftPro Elite 89 valve." Those steps match the Canature WaterGroup 89UF/DF owner's manual line for line. "UF/DF" means the valve can regenerate upflow or downflow.
When Water Filter Guru asked SoftPro about certification, SoftPro pointed them to Canature Water Group's NSF/ANSI 44 listing. The Canature manual lists IAPMO certification to NSF/ANSI 44 and CSA B483.1. So the Elite is assembled in the U.S. on a Canature valve platform. Not a Fleck, not a Clack.
Why that matters: parts and service. A Fleck or Clack valve can be rebuilt by nearly any water treatment tech, with a seal kit or piston from any supply house.
A Canature 89 can be serviced too. Canature is a large OEM, and QWT sells the replacement valve for $493. But the supply-house shelf is thinner, and SoftPro's warranty steers you toward its annual "valve maintenance kit." Not a defect, but a risk to price in for year 12.
One note: QWT's IronMaster iron filter runs a Clack WS1 valve, as documented in the IronMaster comparison. The Elite softener does not. Same brand, two valve families.
What Upflow Regeneration Actually Buys You
Regeneration is the rinse cycle where salty brine cleans the hardness off the resin beads. In a standard downflow softener, brine travels down through the bed. In an upflow softener, it is pushed up from the bottom. The freshest brine ends up where water exits, so less hardness leaks through and a lower salt dose still works.
How much salt does that save? It depends on the comparison:
- SoftPro's page says "up to 75%" less salt and "up to 64%" less water. That is measured against old timer-based softeners that regenerate on a schedule. Any modern metered softener, Fleck and Clack included, beats those too.
- Water Conditioning & Purification magazine, an industry engineering journal, puts countercurrent regeneration at "5 to 10 percent better at most" at a normal 6 to 7 lb per cubic foot salt dose. The real gain comes from running a 3 lb dose with low leakage: 15 to 25% total, "as much as a third" less salt.
- The Canature 89UF/DF manual rates the valve at 4,543 grains removed per pound of salt at the low salt setting. That is a lab rating; the WQA's "high efficiency" bar is 4,000.
The honest verdict: upflow is real, roughly a fifth to a quarter less salt than a comparable downflow unit, with better hardness leakage at low doses. Worth having. It is not 75%, and it is not the difference between a good softener and a bad one.
The same WC&P article notes the trade: upflow brining has to be slow and the bed has to stay packed, or brine channels through and you lose capacity. SoftPro's valve handles that with a controlled refill rate.
For scale, Aidan runs a Fleck 5600SXT 48K on his own 15 grain-per-gallon water at a 6 lb per cubic foot salt dose. He uses one 40 lb bag about every month and a half. SoftPro's FAQ says a typical Elite household uses a bag every 2 to 4 months.

Like SpringWell, US Water Systems, and most online sellers, SoftPro runs a perpetual sale. The 48K city Elite shows a $2,589.67 list price crossed out above the $1,457 selling price. The selling price is the real price. A "44% off" banner should not rush you; it will be there next month.

Three footnotes. SoftPro ships free over $75, so these are landed prices, same as ours. Gold packages that add a carbon filter run $2,447 to $2,827 on the Elite city page. Some SoftPro blog posts quote $1,129 or $1,159; the storefront showed neither. Trust the cart, not the blog.
The well version is priced slightly below the city version at every size, which is unusual. Both list 10% crosslink resin, so resin does not explain it, and SoftPro does not say what does. What the well version definitely comes with is no resin warranty.
Our lineup continues to an 80K at $2,495. At matching sizes, our Fleck is $128 to $608 more than the Elite. We address that gap below rather than hoping you skim past it.
The Lifetime Warranty, Read Closely
"Lifetime warranty" is the second thing every SoftPro page says. It is real, and on paper it beats Fleck's 5-year valve warranty. It is also narrower than the headline, and softener failures happen in exactly the parts the fine print carves out. None of this is hidden, and SoftPro deserves credit for publishing it on one page. But "lifetime valve warranty" and "wear parts excluded, and iron voids it" describe two different products. Only one is in the headline. Labor is excluded too, which is standard for the industry, ours included. A Fleck's 5-year valve warranty is shorter; its seal kit is also a stock item at nearly any supply house.
What SoftPro Elite Owners Report
We read the on-site reviews, the independent tests, the BBB and ConsumerAffairs records, and the community threads. The softener itself gets consistently good marks. Complaints cluster around shipping, support response time, and returns. We found the same pattern with US Water Systems and SpringWell. It probably applies to any company shipping freight nationally without a local service arm, ourselves included on a bad week.
The strongest data point is Water Filter Guru's install and lab test of a well-water Elite in Colorado: roughly 99.9% hardness reduction, easy to DIY, good value (their review). SoftPro's storefront carries several hundred reviews averaging mid-4 stars: "easy install," "soft water in an afternoon," "salt lasts longer than my old unit."
The critical themes:
- Hard to verify off-site. A 2021 r/Plumbing thread noted the "800+ five-star reviews" on SoftPro's own site and how few existed elsewhere. Replies described a product that works, with complaints about shipping delays and confusing warranty terms, not the equipment.
- Returns and defects. A 2025 r/WaterTreatment thread described a unit that arrived leaking resin, slow support, and being quoted the 25% restocking fee. One thread is one thread, but the fee is published policy.
- Thin third-party ratings. QWT's BBB profile is not accredited and, in September 2026, showed an average below 3 out of 5 from a handful of reviews. ConsumerAffairs splits between praise for sizing help and older (2019 to 2020) valve programming complaints. Small samples cut both ways.
We hear the Elite on our own phone line too. This past winter a caller from California, eight people on 40 grain-per-gallon water and holding a $7,000 to $8,000 dealer quote, asked Aidan whether the SoftPro upflow unit was a better buy than a Fleck 9100 twin.
Aidan's answer, which we stand behind in print: Fleck and Clack are the number one and two valve platforms in the country for a reason, and at 40 grains with eight people the real problem was capacity, not brine direction. The row we will not bury: the Elite costs less than ours at every matching size, by $128 at 32K and $538 at 48K. Some of that is real spec. A Pentair Fleck 5600SXT valve is $545 on our site against $493 for the SoftPro replacement valve, so the head alone explains part of it.
The rest buys Aidan sizing the system from your lab numbers, setting the salt dose so a downflow Fleck runs efficiently, and answering the phone on a Sunday when something drips. If none of that has value to you and your water is straightforward, the Elite is a fair place to spend less.
Where the SoftPro Elite Genuinely Wins
Every comparison we publish names the scenarios where the competitor is the right choice. With the Elite there are several:
You want the lowest salt use from a single tank, on city water
Upflow is a real advantage, roughly 15 to 25% less salt than a comparable downflow unit, and the 4,543 grains-per-pound rating is excellent. On clean municipal water, where the warranty exclusions do not bite, the Elite does what it says. If you are confident in your sizing, buy it.
Your budget is the deciding factor
At $1,367 to $1,587 shipped, the Elite undercuts our Fleck 5600SXT by $128 to $608 at matching sizes, and it is a far better softener than anything at a big-box store. If the difference between $1,457 and $1,995 decides whether you get a real softener this year, get the Elite.
You want a smart-home softener

1. A house-brand valve versus the industry-standard platforms
The Elite's Canature 89 is real, certified hardware. Our objection is not quality; it is the year-12 question. When a valve needs a seal kit or a piston a decade from now, "any tech, any supply house, any state" is a feature no lifetime-warranty headline replicates, especially one that excludes the parts that wear. We build on standard, serviceable Fleck and Clack hardware on purpose.
2. Well water: a warranty exclusion versus a filter recommendation
SoftPro sells a well-water Elite and then publishes that iron, manganese, and sulfur exposure void the warranty, and that well-water resin carries none. That is not deceptive; it is physics. Our approach is to say it on the phone: above 1 to 2 ppm of iron, or with any sulfur, put a proper iron filter in front of the softener, whichever softener you buy. They are comparable-class metered softeners with different trade-offs. The Elite (Canature 89 valve, upflow) costs less, about $1,457 versus $1,995 at 48K, and saves an estimated 15 to 25% on salt versus a downflow unit. The Fleck 5600SXT (Pentair valve, downflow) has a 5-year valve warranty but is the most widely serviced softener valve in America. Choose the Elite for lowest upfront cost on clean water; choose the Fleck for long-term serviceability and personal sizing.
Does the SoftPro Elite work on well water with iron?
SoftPro sells a well-water Elite, and the valve manual rates it for up to 2 ppm of dissolved iron, 0.75 ppm manganese, and no hydrogen sulfide. But SoftPro's warranty says high iron, manganese, or sulfur exposure voids coverage, and well-water resin has no warranty at all. Above roughly 1 to 2 ppm of iron, or with any sulfur odor or orange staining, put a dedicated iron filter ahead of the softener, regardless of brand.
How does SoftPro compare to SpringWell?
Both are direct-to-consumer brands that undercut dealer pricing. SpringWell's SS-series softeners run on a Bluetooth app-controlled valve at higher prices; SoftPro's Elite runs a Canature upflow valve at a lower price with a lifetime tank warranty.
