We recommend having a plumber install it. It takes about 2 to 3 hours, and about $800 for most plumbers. Plumbing it in is an inlet and an outlet; the part that takes planning is the 1/2 inch drain line to a floor drain, standpipe or utility sink, with an air gap. Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810, and if you'd rather do it yourself, text him at 443-277-2204 with any questions. It goes in the same way as a water softener.
Test the water first
We size it from a lab test with nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, hardness and iron. Our well water test ($199) covers all five. High sulfate lowers what any nitrate resin can hold, and hardness and iron have to come out ahead of it.
It goes where the water enters the house, before it branches off, so every faucet is treated. Aidan's order is a sediment filter first, then a softener on hard water, then this filter, and a UV light last if the well has bacteria. With low pH or iron, Aidan sets where the neutralizer or iron filter goes from your test.
What the install involves
A spot for the mineral tank and the brine tank near a drain and a standard outlet.
Loading the resin into the empty tank through the funnel, with the center tube taped off so no resin falls in, then mounting the control valve.
Plumbing the inlet (after the softener, or after the last filter ahead of it) and the outlet to the house, through the bypass valve.
The 1/2 inch drain line from the valve to the drain, with an air gap.
The brine line to the brine tank, and pellet salt.
Programming the valve and the first start-up. Aidan goes over the settings and the start-up with you or your plumber by phone.
Questions before or during the install: call 800-460-5810 or text Aidan at 443-277-2204, 7 days a week, 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern.
Upkeep is keeping salt in the brine tank, the same as a water softener. The valve regenerates the resin on its own, by the gallons you use. No cartridges in the filter itself, and the resin is rinsed with salt each cycle instead of being used up.
What to do and when
Every month
Check the salt and top it up. Use plain pellet salt, not rock salt; about $8 for a 40 lb bag. How much it uses depends on your nitrate, your sulfate and your water use.
Every year
Test the treated water for nitrate. Our nitrate test ($139) gives the number. The EPA says to test a private well for nitrate every year.
If nitrate shows up in the treated water
Call or text Aidan first: he checks the salt, the valve settings and the bypass with you. If those are right, the resin is due. Aidan tells callers the nitrate resin lasts about 10 to 15 years. Replacement SIR-100-HP is $545 per cubic foot; this tank takes 2.0 cubic feet.
A 64,000 Grain Whole House Nitrate Filter on the Fleck 5600SXT
Nitrate-selective resin that regenerates with softener salt, on the valve Aidan recommends most for nitrate in well water.
Nitrate in well water is a contaminant you treat for the youngest people in the house. The EPA limit is 10 ppm nitrate (as N) and 1 ppm nitrite, and babies under 6 months are the ones most at risk. Nitrate has no color, smell or taste, so only a test finds it. It reaches wells from fertilizer, septic systems and animal waste.
This 64,000 grain filter holds 2.0 cubic feet of ResinTech SIR-100-HP, a nitrate-selective anion resin with the WQA Gold Seal for drinking water. Generic anion resins prefer sulfate, and once they load up with it they can release captured nitrate back into the water; ResinTech says SIR-100-HP's amine group "eliminates the possibility of nitrate dumping". The Fleck 5600SXT valve counts the gallons you use and rinses the resin with salt brine when it is due, sending the nitrate down the drain. On hard water or water with iron, a softener or iron filter goes ahead of it. It is a third more resin than the 48,000 grain filter, so it goes longer between regenerations, for high flow rates up to 15 gpm, high nitrate or high sulfate.
The Vortech tank ships empty; the resin ships separately and is loaded at install through the included funnel. Drain tubing is not included. We recommend having a plumber install it: about 2 to 3 hours, and about $800 for most plumbers. Plumbing it in is an inlet and an outlet; the part that takes planning is the 1/2 inch drain line to a floor drain, standpipe or utility sink, with an air gap. Help after you buy
Call or text about loading the resin, the valve settings, salt, or reading your treated-water test. Help is by phone and text.
By ion exchange. The tank holds 2.0 cubic feet of ResinTech SIR-100-HP, a nitrate-selective anion resin. As water flows through it, the resin swaps chloride for nitrate and holds the nitrate. When the Fleck valve has counted enough gallons, it rinses the resin with salt brine, sends the nitrate down the drain and readies the resin again. It works like a water softener, with a resin made for nitrate instead of hardness.
On calls I tell people to expect the nitrate to come out completely, and to test the treated water after it goes in so you see it on a lab report.
The 48,000 grain filter, 1.5 cubic feet of resin in a 10 x 54 inch tank, is the nitrate filter I recommend most, including for homes with 4 to 6 people and 3 or 4 bathrooms. The 64,000 grain filter holds 2.0 cubic feet, a third more resin, and handles high flow rates up to 15 gallons per minute; it goes longer between regenerations, so it also makes sense when nitrate or sulfate runs high. Send me your water test and how many people and bathrooms you have, and I'll tell you which one fits.
If your water is hard, yes. Hardness and iron have to come out before the water reaches the nitrate resin, and on hard water the brine and rinse water should be softened too (ResinTech). The order is a sediment filter, then the softener, then this filter, and a UV light last if the well has bacteria. With low pH or iron, I set where the neutralizer or iron filter goes from your test. See our water softeners.
Yes. Nitrite is also an anion and the same resin takes it out. The EPA limits are 10 ppm for nitrate and 1 ppm for nitrite, both measured as nitrogen. Test for both before and after the install.
Not for nitrate, if this filter is treating the whole house. An under-sink RO treats one faucet, the kitchen sink, and I tell nitrate callers to expect it to take out about half, up to 70 percent, so at 20 ppm the RO water can still be at the limit. If you only need drinking and cooking water, the Pure-75 RO is $595; test the RO water after it goes in. With a baby under 6 months in the house, Minnesota's health department recommends bottled water for the baby even with treatment, in case the treatment fails.
The Vortech tank (empty), 2.0 cubic feet of nitrate resin in separate bags or boxes, a fill funnel, the Fleck 5600SXT valve with the bypass pre-installed on it, and the brine tank. The resin is loaded into the tank at install. It ships unassembled and can arrive in more than one shipment. Drain tubing, fittings and salt are not included.
We recommend one. It installs like a water softener: an inlet, an outlet, a 1/2 inch drain line with an air gap, a brine line and an outlet for the valve, and the drain line is the part that takes planning. Plan on about 2 to 3 hours of a plumber's time. I support your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. If you'd rather do it yourself, you can; text me at 443-277-2204 with any questions.
It uses pellet salt the way a softener does, drawn from the brine tank each time it regenerates. Use plain pellet salt, not rock salt; a 40 lb bag is about $8. How often it regenerates depends on your nitrate, your sulfate and how much water you use, so send me your test and I'll give you an estimate.
Sulfate takes up room on any nitrate resin. SIR-100-HP is made to prefer nitrate, so it will not release captured nitrate back into the water the way generic anion resins can, but high sulfate still means it regenerates more often. If your report shows high sulfate, call or text me the numbers before you order.
I tell callers the nitrate resin lasts about 10 to 15 years. It is rinsed with salt every cycle instead of being used up. If nitrate shows up in your treated water, call or text me first so we can check the salt, the valve settings and the bypass. If those are right, you rebed the tank with replacement SIR-100-HP ($545 per cubic foot) rather than replacing the system.
Yes. Nitrate has no color, taste or smell, so only a test gives you the number, and I size this filter from nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, hardness and iron. Our $199 well water test covers all of them; the $139 nitrate test gives the nitrate number only. The EPA says to test a private well for nitrate every year. If you already have a report, send it to me.

This filter next to the lower-cost way to lower nitrate
What a cheaper nitrate fix can leave out
A nitrate filter built on a generic anion resin prefers sulfate. Once sulfate loads the resin, it can release captured nitrate back into your water (Water Quality Association). You cannot see, smell or taste it happening.
The other lower-cost path is an under-sink RO. It is a real drinking-water tool, but it treats one faucet. Aidan tells nitrate callers to expect an under-sink RO to take out about half, up to 70 percent, so test the RO water after it goes in.
Two ways to lower nitrate
An under-sink RO (our Pure-75)
$595
• Treats the kitchen sink only
• About half the nitrate, up to 70 percent
Filter and membrane changes; test the RO water
This whole house nitrate filter
$3,495
• Resin lasts about 10 to 15 years, in Aidan's experience
• Nitrate out at every faucet
Pellet salt in the brine tank; a yearly test
Which one is right depends on your number. If you only need drinking and cooking water and the nitrate is close to the limit, the RO may be enough. Higher than that, or if you want every faucet treated, the whole house filter treats every faucet. Send Aidan your test and he'll tell you which.
