Pentair Water Softeners Explained (2026): Fleck, Pelican, Everpure, and the Dealer Line, and Which One You Are Actually Being Quoted

Pentair Water Softeners Explained (2026): Fleck, Pelican, Everpure, and Which One You Are Being Quoted
Pentair does not make one water softener. It makes the Fleck valve that sits on top of thousands of them, including ours. When a dealer writes "Pentair softener" on a quote, that word tells you the valve is good and nothing else. Here is how to read it, what it costs, and when the dealer is the right buy.
New to softeners entirely? Start with our Complete Guide to Water Softeners, then come back here to decode the brand name.
Quick Answer
Most "Pentair softeners" are Fleck-valve systems assembled by an independent dealer. Pentair bought Fleck Controls in 1995. It also sells a Pentair-branded 5600SXT Series and a dealer-only Pro Elite. It bought Pelican in 2019 and closed that direct-to-consumer division in 2022. Everpure is a filter brand, not a softener.
- What Pentair publishes for prices: nothing. Documented dealer quotes run $2,400 to $2,500 installed for a 1.0 to 1.5 cubic foot Pentair-labeled softener.
- What the same valve costs with the price printed: a Fleck 5600SXT 48,000-grain softener with 10% crosslink resin is $1,995 shipped from us ($1,495 to $2,195 across sizes). Add your plumber's labor.
- Aidan's rule of thumb: if the control head says Pentair or Fleck, every serious supplier in the country stocks the parts. That is the best thing about the brand, whoever sold you the system.

Quiz: Which "Pentair" Are You Looking At?
How did "Pentair" show up for you?
One question. The advice changes completely depending on the answer.
What brought you here?
Each of these is a different product, channel, and price.
Ask One Question: Which Valve, and Which Tank Size?
Same Valve Everywhere. The Difference Is What Is Around It.
Keep It Running. Here Is Where the Parts Are.
Those Are Filters, Not Softeners. Different Job Entirely.
The Four Things "Pentair" Means in Water Treatment
Pentair plc is a publicly traded water company with brands across pool equipment, commercial filtration, and residential water treatment. Four of those brands matter to a softener shopper. Lumping them together is where the confusion starts.
1. Fleck: the valve on top of the tank
Fleck started in Milwaukee in 1950 and built its first automatic softener control valve in 1963 (Pentair's Fleck history brochure). Pentair bought Fleck Controls for about $130 million in November 1995 (Pentair SEC filing; New York Times, October 1995).
Every Fleck valve made since is a Pentair product, sold to independent dealers who build complete softeners around it. This is the Pentair inside most "Pentair softeners," and the one we build on.
2. Pentair Water Solutions: the Pelican lineage and the dealer line
Pentair paid $120 million for Pelican Water Systems in February 2019 (Twin Cities Business coverage) and for a few years sold softeners direct to homeowners as Pentair Water Solutions. Its support FAQ now says the "Pentair Pelican In Home Division was closed in 2022" and points buyers to its True Blue dealer network (archived Pentair FAQ).
Today pentair.com lists a Pentair-branded 5600SXT Series softener, the dealer-only Pro Elite, and the OMNIFilter retail line, all with a "Find a Dealer" button where a price would go. The full Pelican story is in our Pelican Water Systems review.
3. Everpure: commercial and under-sink filtration
Everpure is Pentair's cartridge filtration brand for foodservice, with an under-sink line for drinking water (Pentair Everpure brand page). It treats taste, odor, and specific contaminants at one tap. It does not soften water.
4. Pentek, Big Blue, Structural, WellMate: the components
Pentek is Pentair's filter housing brand. The Big Blue housing is the standard whole-house sediment prefilter: the 10-inch model flows 15 gallons per minute at a 1 psi drop and is certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (Pentek Big Blue spec sheet). Structural makes fiberglass tanks and WellMate makes well pressure tanks (Pentair brand directory).
When a caller in Indiana told Aidan he had "a Pentair type whole-house filter," this is what he had: a Big Blue housing. A prefilter, not treatment.
The timeline that explains the confusion
Decoding Your Quote
"Pentair water softener" on a quote could mean any of six things. The last column matters most, because the parts ecosystem decides whether the system is still serviceable in year twelve.
| What the quote or listing says | What it actually is | Who sells it | Parts ecosystem |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Pentair softener" from a local water dealer | Usually a Fleck-valve system (5600SXT, 5800, 2510, or 9100) on a standard fiberglass tank, assembled by the dealer or a distributor. | Independent dealers nationwide | Universal Fleck parts; any plumber |
| "Pentair 5600SXT Series Softener" | Pentair's own branded system: a Fleck 5600SXT valve on 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 cubic feet of resin. | Dealers and online retailers | Universal Fleck parts |
| "Pentair Pro Elite" | Dealer-only line with 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 cubic feet of 10% crosslink resin, a 25 gpm control valve, and WQA certification of the complete system to NSF/ANSI 44 and 372 (Pro Elite spec sheet). | Authorized Pentair dealers only | Through the dealer network |
| "Pentair Water Softening System 1.0 / 1.5 / 2.0" | The direct-to-consumer softener from the Pentair Water Solutions era (Pelican lineage). Its manual never mentions Fleck (Pentair manual 37297). | No longer sold new; Pentair still supports legacy owners | Pentair support line; not a universal platform |
| "OMNIFilter softener" | Pentair's retail-channel brand, sold through home improvement stores. | Big-box retail | Pentair consumer support |
| "Pentair Pelican NaturSoft" | Not a softener. A salt-free scale conditioner using TAC media (template assisted crystallization), discontinued with the Pelican line. Water tests just as hard after it. | Discontinued | See our Pelican owners' guide |
The phrase to listen for: "Pentair" as a halo
The name does a lot of work on a sales call. A caller in Louisiana asked whether our softeners were "the Pentair ones," meaning it as a quality test. A homeowner in Tennessee wrote in this spring believing an online retailer owned Fleck. It does not; Pentair has since 1995.
None of that is dishonest. It just means "Pentair" tells you the valve is good and nothing about the tank, resin, sizing, or price. Ask for the valve model and tank dimensions in writing. Our guide to reading a dealer quote shows which line items to look for.
Why the Same Softener Is Rated 17,000 and 48,000 Grains
This is the most confusing part of comparing a Pentair-branded softener to a dealer-built Fleck. It makes Pentair's units look a third the size of ours when the resin volume is the same.
A grain is the unit of hardness a softener removes. Capacity depends on how much salt you use each time the softener regenerates (flushes and recharges the resin). More salt per cycle, more grains before the next cycle, up to a ceiling.
Pentair's manual for the 1.5 cubic foot softener prints the whole curve: 24,990 grains at 5.8 pounds of salt, 36,889 at 11.8 pounds, and 46,089 at 23.7 pounds, all from one tank of resin (manual 37297). Pentair's product page rates that same unit at 17,000 grains, the efficiency figure. Nearly every dealer, including us, lists it at "48,000 grains," the maximum.
Neither number is wrong. Compare quotes by cubic feet of resin and tank dimensions, not grain ratings. This is also why Aidan sizes by hardness, iron, and household rather than by the number on the box. Our sizing guide walks through the math.
The Fleck Valve Lineup in Plain English
Since almost every "Pentair softener" is a Fleck-valve softener, here is what the model numbers mean. Specs are from Pentair's published Fleck documentation.
- 5600SXT. The standard residential softener valve for 1 to 5 bathrooms. 20 gpm service flow, 7 gpm backwash, tanks up to 12 inches. Metered regeneration.
- 5800 / 5810 / 5812. Pentair's newer residential family, up to 36 gpm service on the 5810. Good valve; it has not displaced the 5600SXT in the field.
- 2510SXT. The higher-backwash sibling: 19 gpm service, 17 gpm backwash. Used on iron, sediment, and carbon filters where 7 gpm cannot lift the media. The 2510 AIO variant adds an air-injection cycle for iron and sulfur.
- 7000SXT. High flow, 1-1/4 inch connections, 31 gpm backwash. For large homes and light commercial.
- 9100SXT / 9000. Twin alternating softener. One tank is always in service while the other regenerates, so there is soft water 24 hours a day.
What "SXT" means
SXT is the digital controller on a Fleck valve: LCD display, metered programming, and a super capacitor that keeps settings through an outage. The older "5600 Econominder" used a mechanical meter, and a "5600 timer" regenerates on a calendar whether you used water or not. If a quote says "Fleck 5600" without the SXT, ask which controller it has.
We sell more 5600SXTs than anything else, so here is the honest version. It is a 60-year-old piston-and-seal design that runs 15 to 20 years. Its weak points: a seal and spacer kit that eventually needs replacing, and a 7 gpm backwash that limits it to softening. Our Fleck 5600SXT honest review goes deeper; Clack vs. Fleck covers the one serious competitor.
What a Pentair Water Softener Costs (With Sources)
Pentair does not publish a price for any residential softener; every softener page on pentair.com ends in "Find a Dealer." So the price means one of two things: what a dealer charges for a Pentair-labeled system, or what a Fleck-valve system costs from a seller who prints the number.
| Item | Documented price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Pentair 5600SXT Series / Pro Elite | No published price; dealer quote required | pentair.com Pro Elite page, September 2026 |
| "Pentair Water Softener," dealer-installed (Fleck 5800SXT valve, 9x48 tank, 1.0 cu ft class) | $2,400 as a line item inside an $8,600 package | Southern California homeowner's itemized quote, r/Plumbing |
| Independent installer's own price for a 10x54 tank, 1.5 cu ft of 10% crosslink resin, metered valve (comparable hardware class to a Fleck 5600SXT build) | About $2,500 installed | Installer answering a $9,000 dealer quote, r/WaterTreatment |
| Fleck 5600SXT 32,000-grain (1.0 cu ft class), shipped | $1,495 | Mid Atlantic Water, live price |
| Fleck 5600SXT 48,000-grain (1.5 cu ft, 10% crosslink), shipped | $1,995 | Mid Atlantic Water, live price |
| Fleck 5600SXT 64,000-grain (2.0 cu ft, 10% crosslink), shipped | $2,195 | Mid Atlantic Water, live price |
| Fleck 9100SXT twin-tank 64,000-grain, shipped | $2,695 | Mid Atlantic Water, live price |
| Plumber install labor for a pre-assembled softener | Typically a few hundred dollars for a same-spot swap | What our customers report after install |
The pattern is simple. The $2,400 "Pentair Water Softener" on that California quote was a 1.0 cubic foot Fleck-valve softener with installation folded in. The same class of hardware with the price printed is $1,495 shipped. That is not a scandal. The dealer is charging for assembly, delivery, labor, and being one accountable phone number.
One caution on the cheap end. You will see Fleck 5600SXT softeners online for well under $1,000. The valve is real. What is usually missing is 10% crosslink resin (8% fails years earlier on chlorine or iron), an installed bypass, and anyone who sizes it to your water test. Our quote-too-high guide covers how to tell a fair price from a padded one.
Warranty Terms, Line by Line
The warranty depends on which Pentair line you bought. These are Pentair's published terms as of September 2026, from the Pentair Residential Filtration limited warranty (Fleck valves, Structural tanks, Pentek housings) and the Pentair home water treatment warranty page (Pentair Water Solutions systems).
| Product | Pentair warranty period | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fleck control valves (5600SXT, 5800, 2510SXT, 7000, 9100) | 5 years | The 2510 AIO (air-injection variant) is listed separately at 1 year. |
| Structural fiberglass mineral tanks | 10 years (13" diameter and smaller); 5 years (14" and larger) | Brine tanks and cabinets: 5 years |
| Pentek housings (Big Blue) | 1 year for housings and systems; 5 years for opaque caps and sumps | Replacement cartridges are consumables |
| Pentair Water Solutions salt softeners | Complete system 1 year; tank, valve, and electronics 5 years; media 5 years on municipal water, 1 year on well water | Same terms listed for "all other" tank-based systems, where the Pro Elite falls unless your dealer states otherwise |
| OMNIFilter softeners | Tank and valve 10 years; electrical 5 years | Per Pentair's OMNIFilter warranty terms; confirm on your model's paperwork |
Three lines of fine print matter more than the year counts. First, coverage is parts only; labor is on you. Second, everyone but Pentair's direct customers "must submit warranty claims with their direct suppliers," so your claim runs through whoever sold you the system, whether a local dealer or us.
Third, the one that surprises people: incorporating "any parts manufactured by a third party into a Pentair Product shall completely void the limited warranty." Put a generic seal kit in a Fleck valve during the warranty period and Pentair's obligation ends. Inside year five, use Pentair parts. Registration is not required; keep your proof of purchase.
Pentair covers the 2510 AIO for one year, not five
Pentair's published component warranty lists Fleck valves at 5 years but breaks out the 2510 AIO air-injection variant at 1 year. Any longer valve coverage on an AIO-based iron filter is the seller standing behind the valve on top of Pentair's term.
Our own 2510AIO iron filters carry a 5-year valve warranty, and that is Mid Atlantic Water backing years two through five, not Pentair. Whoever you buy from, get the term in writing and know who is behind it.
Parts and Serviceability: The Real Pentair Advantage
If there is one reason to be glad "Pentair" is on your quote, it is this. Fleck has been the industry-standard residential valve for decades, so seal kits, pistons, brine valves, motors, and SXT boards are stocked by dozens of national suppliers and familiar to nearly every technician.
A caller in Indiana put it exactly right when he told Aidan he liked Fleck because "parts are readily available because it's owned by Pentair." A Virginia homeowner called this year hunting for a piston assembly for an older Fleck valve. Stocked part, not a special order.
Contrast that with the two Pentair lines that are not Fleck-based. The Pentair Water Solutions softener uses its own valve, supported through one legacy phone line. The Pro Elite manual sends owners to their dealer for parts. Both are legitimate; both tie you to a single channel.
The Illinois homeowner who kept his Pentair
This summer an Illinois homeowner called Aidan about a house he had just bought. The previous owner had installed a "Pentair AIO" iron filter; did it have to go when he added a softener? Aidan's answer, in his words: "Pentair owns Fleck now. If it's Pentair, it's gonna be a Fleck valve."
The filter was working and the parts are universal, so the right move was to leave it alone and size a Fleck 5600SXT softener behind it. That is what an open platform buys you: keep what works, add what you need, from whoever you want.
Where a Pentair-Branded System Is the Right Call
We sell Fleck-valve systems direct, so weigh what follows knowing that. But these are real, and I would say them to a friend.
You want one accountable local company for everything
A True Blue dealer installing a Pro Elite or 5600SXT Series unit gives you one phone number for the sale, the install, the warranty claim, and the service call in year seven. That accountability is worth a real premium to some households, and the hardware underneath is good.
Your situation requires a certified complete system
The Pro Elite is WQA-certified as a complete system to NSF/ANSI 44 (softener performance) and 372 (lead-free). Most dealer-assembled Fleck softeners, including ours, are built from individually certified components. If a rebate program, HOA rule, or inspector requires system-level certification on paper, the Pro Elite has it.
You already own a working Pentair, Fleck, or Pelican unit
Keep it. The Fleck-based ones have universal parts. The Pentair Water Solutions and Pelican ones are still supported. Replacing a working system because the sales channel changed is a waste of money, and we will tell you so.
You run a restaurant, coffee shop, or ice machine
Everpure is the right brand for that job. It is the foodservice standard for a reason, and it is not what we do.
The named scenario where the Pentair dealer wins outright
You are on city water, you have no plumber you trust, and a True Blue dealer has quoted a Pro Elite installed within a few hundred dollars of printed-price hardware plus a plumber. Take the dealer. The system is certified, the valve is proven, and the accountability is real. The gap is only worth acting on when it is thousands, not hundreds.
Where the Brand Name Costs You
- No published prices, anywhere. The only way to learn what a Pentair softener costs is to have a salesperson in your kitchen, and the quotes that come out of those visits vary enormously.
- The name is doing work it did not earn. The same word covers a $545 valve and an $8,600 package. Treat it as a component name, not a quality guarantee for the whole system.
- The direct channel already closed once. Homeowners who bought a Pentair Water Solutions softener between 2019 and 2022 are still supported, and Pentair has handled it honorably. The lesson stands: buy on a platform whose parts are universal.
- Two rating systems and a strict parts clause. The grain-rating confusion and the third-party-parts warranty rule are covered above. Both are reasonable on Pentair's side; both cost you if nobody explains them.
Weighing Pentair against the other big dealer name? Culligan sells proprietary-valve softeners through franchised dealers with dealer-only parts, a different model entirely. Our Culligan water softener cost guide has the documented Culligan quotes.
Full Transparency: We Sell Fleck-Valve Systems Too
Mid Atlantic Water is an independent dealer. We buy Fleck valves through Pentair's distribution channel and build complete systems on them, like the local dealer whose quote says "Pentair." The differences are in what is around the valve and how the sale happens.
- The price is printed. The 32,000-grain ($1,495), 48,000-grain ($1,995), 64,000-grain ($2,195), 80,000-grain ($2,495), and 9100SXT twin-tank ($2,695) all ship free to the lower 48.
- What is in the box is specified. Fleck 5600SXT metered valve, 10% crosslink resin, a fiberglass tank with a 10-year warranty, a 1-inch stainless bypass pre-installed. Pentair's 5-year valve warranty applies, and the claim runs through us.
- Sizing is done by a person, from your water. Send Aidan your hardness, iron, pH, and household size. He will tell you which size you need, whether you need an iron filter or acid neutralizer in front of it, and, when it is true, that you do not need a softener at all.
- Install is by you or your plumber. Four connections: inlet, outlet, drain, and brine overflow. We support you and your plumber by phone, in all 50 states.
We also sell the same Pentek components the dealers use: the 10" Big Blue sediment kit at $165, the 20" kit at $195, and the bare 5600SXT valve at $545 for anyone rebuilding an older softener.
What This Assessment Is Based On
We are a Fleck and Clack dealer, so we have a commercial interest in you buying a Fleck-valve system from us rather than a Pentair-branded one from a True Blue dealer. We have installed and serviced Fleck valves for over 30 years. We have not installed a Pro Elite or a Pentair Water Solutions softener ourselves.
Everything said about those lines comes from Pentair's published spec sheets, manuals, warranty documents, and support FAQ (linked above), SEC filings and news coverage, owner-posted quotes and installer pricing on the trade forums, and the Pentair-related calls and emails our support line handles every week.
The Two Honest Next Steps
You have a "Pentair softener" quote in hand: text a photo of it to Aidan at 443-277-2204, call 800-460-5810, or email support@midatlanticwater.net. He will tell you which valve and tank you are being quoted and what the comparable hardware class costs. If the dealer's number is fair, he will say so.
You do not know your water numbers yet: start with the certified lab test (city water, 47 contaminants or well water, 53 contaminants, $199 each). A softener sized without hardness, iron, and pH numbers is a guess. Send Aidan the results and he will size it from the data.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Pentair water softeners any good?
Yes, with a caveat. Pentair owns Fleck, and Fleck valves (5600SXT, 5800, 2510, 9100) are the most widely used residential softener valves in the United States, with a 60-year track record, a 5-year warranty, and parts stocked everywhere. But "Pentair" on a quote says nothing about the resin grade, tank, sizing, or price. Judge the system, not the logo.
Is Fleck the same as Pentair, and who makes Pentair softeners?
Fleck is a Pentair brand, acquired in November 1995. A "Pentair Fleck 5600SXT" and a "Fleck 5600SXT" are the same product. Pentair Residential Filtration makes the Fleck valves, Structural tanks, and Pentek housings inside most Pentair-labeled softeners; local dealers usually assemble the complete system. The Pro Elite is Pentair's own complete system, sold only through authorized dealers.
How much does a Pentair water softener cost?
Pentair publishes no prices; every softener on pentair.com routes to "Find a Dealer." Documented dealer quotes include $2,400 for a 1.0 cubic foot Pentair-labeled softener installed, and an installer's own figure of about $2,500 installed for a 1.5 cubic foot metered softener. The comparable hardware class with the price printed is $1,495 to $2,195 shipped from Mid Atlantic Water, plus your plumber's labor.
How long do Pentair water softeners last?
A Fleck-valve softener typically runs 15 to 20 years or more. The wear items (seal and spacer kit, piston, eventually the resin) are all replaceable. 10% crosslink resin can last 15 years or more; standard 8% resin on chlorinated or iron-bearing water can fail in well under 10. Pentair warrants Fleck valves for 5 years and Structural tanks 13 inches and smaller for 10 years.
Does Pentair sell water softeners directly to homeowners?
Not anymore. Pentair sold complete systems direct to consumers as Pentair Water Solutions after acquiring Pelican in 2019, but its support FAQ states the "Pentair Pelican In Home Division was closed in 2022." New buyers are directed to Pentair's True Blue dealer network, and the Pentair-branded 5600SXT Series is sold through dealers and online retailers.
What happened to Pentair Pelican?
Pentair bought Pelican Water Systems for $120 million in 2019, folded it into Pentair Water Solutions, and closed the in-home division in 2022. The Pelican line (PC600 and PC1000 carbon filters, NaturSoft salt-free conditioners) is no longer sold new. Legacy owners still get parts and support from Pentair. Our Pelican Water Systems review covers what owners should do now.
Is Pentair Everpure a water softener?
No. Everpure is Pentair's cartridge filtration brand, used mainly in foodservice, with an under-sink line for drinking water. It improves taste and reduces specific contaminants at one tap. It does not remove hardness. If hard water is your problem, you need an ion-exchange softener.
Pentair vs. Culligan: which is better?
They are different business models more than quality tiers. Culligan sells proprietary-valve softeners through franchised dealers with dealer-only parts. A "Pentair softener" usually runs on the open Fleck platform with universal parts. If you value having any plumber service the unit for 20 years, Fleck is the stronger choice. If you want one national brand handling everything, Culligan delivers that at a premium.
