Iron Curtain vs Katalox Light: Iron Filter Systems Compared

An Iron Curtain is a two-tank iron filter made by Hellenbrand of Waunakee, Wisconsin. In the first tank your water sprays through a head of air that a small electric air pump keeps refilling, and in the second tank four layers of filter media catch the rust that forms. It uses no chemicals or salt, and it's sold through local Hellenbrand dealers. I don't sell it. I sell a one-tank air injection filter with Katalox Light, so this page takes the Iron Curtain from Hellenbrand's own owner's manual, shows what dealers charge for it today, and lays the two side by side.

What an Iron Curtain is

The Iron Curtain is a whole-house filter for iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide on well water, built as two tanks: a pressurized air tank and a multi-media filter tank. Hellenbrand's manual lists two patents on it and says the original system was validated by the Water Quality Association (WQA) under its S-200 filter standard. Hellenbrand sells it under its ProMate 6 line, and every product page sends you to a local dealer.

How the two Iron Curtain tanks work

The manual describes three steps. First, water comes into the air tank and "cascades through a head of air," and the oxygen in that air starts turning dissolved iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide into solid specks. Second, the water sits in the air tank long enough for the specks to grow; Hellenbrand says its tank gives "several minutes of contact time at the rated service flows, compared to only seconds on other systems." Third, the water goes to the filter tank and down through four layers of media, coarse and light on top, heavier and finer below, with a support bed at the bottom. Clean water rises up the center tube to the house, and the specks stay in the bed until the next backwash.

The air is the part that differs from a one-tank filter. A 110 volt air pump refills the air head on a timer, factory set to run for 10 minutes about every 500 gallons, and more often with higher iron or sulfur (every 100 gallons at 8 to 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide). Hellenbrand counts this as an advantage: its manual says the design "eliminates the need for air injectors, venturis, or micronizers that can plug with iron." It also means the system needs a continuous 110 volt outlet for the valve and the pump.

The three Iron Curtain models

Hellenbrand makes three filters under the Iron Curtain name. This page is about the IC 2.0, the two-tank model with the air pump.

When a dealer quotes "an Iron Curtain," ask which one. The IC Junior is the lower-priced one and is made for lighter iron.

Will an Iron Curtain work on your water?

It will if your test falls inside the operating conditions printed in its manual. The IC 2.0 needs a pH of 7.0 or higher and is rated for up to 10 ppm iron, 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide and 2 ppm manganese. Hellenbrand notes that each limit was tested on its own, and that several together may lower what the filter can handle.

A well owner emailed me in July 2026 after reading the spec sheet on an Iron Curtain Junior. He'd noticed it said TDS and pH affect how the unit performs, and his water had iron around 7 ppm, a pH of 6.8 and a TDS of 1300. By the IC 2.0 manual, that pH is under its 7.0 minimum and that TDS is over the 750 ppm at which the manual voids its performance claims. His question to me was the right one to ask of any of these systems: will it work on my water? For ours, it works best near pH 8. If yours is lower, send me your test before you order. What an Iron Curtain costs today

At the two dealers I found that publish prices, the IC 2.0 costs $2,595 to $2,697 and the IC Junior starts at $1,897. Hellenbrand doesn't publish prices, and these two dealers were the ones I found that do, so treat them as a reference point for your own quote.

Prices as posted on October 16, 2026. Neither page says whether installation is in the price, so ask. Dalee also offers 12-month rent-to-own. For a quote of any brand that feels high, I go through what to ask in is my water treatment quote too high.

What Iron Curtain upkeep costs

Dalee lists a clean and check for an owned Iron Curtain at $99 plus parts and labor, and includes annual cleaning and testing in its rentals. Hellenbrand sells a rebed mix for each filter size, but the manual doesn't print how long the media lasts. If iron bacteria show up, the manual's options are chlorine injected during the backwash or, in some cases, chlorinating the whole water supply.

One of our buyers had an Iron Curtain before ours. Robert wrote that when it wasn't working well, "there's only one company allowed to service that thing," the visit "charged $600 which made no difference to the water really," and the next step quoted was "$2000 for a new tank." That's one owner's experience, not a rule, but it shows why to ask a dealer up front what a service call and a new tank cost.

The Iron Curtain warranty

Hellenbrand's warranty covers the whole system for 1 year. Longer terms cover parts: 5 years on the control valve's electrical parts and body, 5 years on the aeration control body (not its solenoid or air pump), and 10 years on tanks up to 13 inches across. It covers the original buyer only, ends if the system is sold or moved, includes no labor, and does not cover service by anyone other than Hellenbrand or an authorized seller. Iron Curtain vs our Katalox Light filter

The two do the same job, air first and then a filter bed, in a different number of tanks. Each row below comes from Hellenbrand's manual and the dealers above, or from our own product pages.

When an Iron Curtain is the better choice

An Iron Curtain is the better fit in three cases, and I'd tell you so on the phone.

• You want a local company to own the job. A dealer installs it, services it and handles the warranty, and some rent it with annual maintenance and repairs included. I ship our filter to you, and your plumber installs it.
• Your iron is low and you want fewer backwashes. Under 3 ppm, the Iron Curtain backwashes every third day. Ours ships set to backwash every day, using about 70 gallons on the 1.5 and about 140 on the 2.0 and 2.5, and it can be set to run less often.
• You'd rather have no Venturi. Hellenbrand's design uses an air pump instead, and its manual counts that as an advantage. The trade is a pump and a solenoid that need a continuous outlet and fall outside the 5-year parts terms.

Ours is the better fit when you want to own the filter outright with no dealer, or when the quote you have is well above these prices. If your test is past the Iron Curtain manual's limits, its manual says to consult your dealer and warns that installing it anyway may void part or all of the warranty. Send me that test and I'll tell you what I'd put in. One buyer with over 20 ppm ferrous iron wrote that she "was rejected by local water companies saying they could not help me with my high iron issues"; two of our 2.5 filters took her iron to zero (her review is in the buyer table below).

Our Katalox Light iron filter

Ours is a single tank on a Fleck 2510 AiQ control valve. During its backwash cycle the valve draws in fresh air and builds an air pocket at the top of the tank. As I put it in the video, "what that air pocket does is it will precipitate the iron out before it even reaches the Katalox Light media. So it's almost like having two filters in one." Every size is rated to remove up to 30 ppm iron, 15 ppm manganese and 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide. Above 30 ppm, I put two 2.5 tanks in a row. It doesn't soften water and doesn't disinfect it; for iron bacteria, I put a UV light after it. How the whole cycle runs is in how an iron filter works.

It's the one iron filter design I sell, in four sizes. In the video I said, "We've actually discontinued all of our other iron filter treatment systems and use the 2510AIO with Katalox Light exclusively." The 1.5 is $2,095, the 2.0 is $2,295, the 2.5 is $2,495 and the 3.5 is $3,295. The 1.5 is my usual pick for 2 to 4 people with lower iron levels, the 2.5 fits 4 to 10 people, and most homes buy the 2.5.

What ships: the Vortech mineral tank (empty), the Fleck 2510 AiQ control valve with its stainless bypass valve, a fill funnel, and the Katalox Light, which ships separately and is loaded into the tank at install through the funnel. Drain tubing is not included.

I recommend having a plumber put it in: about 2 to 3 hours, around $800. Plumbing it in is an inlet and an outlet, plus an outlet for the valve; the part that takes planning is the drain line, sized for the backwash flow, with an air gap to a floor drain, standpipe or utility sink. Typically, there's no annual maintenance. Every 6 to 8 years the Katalox Light gets replaced, which runs about $550 for the 1.5, $650 for the 2.0, $875 for the 2.5 and $1,200 for the 3.5 at today's prices.

That video went up in March 2026, and a few things have changed since. Orders now ship with the Fleck 2510 AiQ, the newer version of the valve you see. The 2.5 is $2,495 today, not the $2,195 I say on camera. I no longer say the filter raises your pH toward 8: it works best near pH 8, and if your test shows a low pH, I tell you where an acid neutralizer goes. And on camera I say brand names like Iron Curtain are "just putting a name on it." The name is marketing, but the Iron Curtain's two tanks and air pump are a real difference in design, which is why it gets this page.

The IronBreaker is a different filter

The IronBreaker gets named alongside the Iron Curtain, as I did in the video, but it comes from a different company. The IronBreaker III is made by Charger Water Treatment Products of Morton Grove, Illinois, and it's a single-tank air injection filter, closer in design to ours than to the Iron Curtain.
