How the Twin-Tank IC 2.0 Works
The flagship IC 2.0 uses a three-step process: oxidation, precipitation, and filtration. Raw well water is forced through a pocket of compressed air in the first (aeration) tank, which converts dissolved ferrous iron into solid ferric particles. Hellenbrand's design gives the water several minutes of contact time in the aeration tank, longer than most single-tank designs manage. The water then flows to the second tank, where a layered multi-media bed traps the oxidized particles. When the air head depletes, a 110V aeration pump recharges it automatically. This is genuinely sound engineering. The aeration approach is the same core principle our AIO systems use. The differences that matter are the second tank, the dealer-only distribution model, and the operating limits, which we will get to.
The IC Junior deserves a special note: it is a single tank that maintains an air pocket internally, drawn in during regeneration. If that sounds familiar, it should. By the time a twin-tank IC 2.0 is sized for a family home and professionally installed, the quotes homeowners read to us over the phone consistently land in the $3,000 to $5,000 range. Under the Shroud: What Is Actually Inside an Iron Curtain
This is the part dealer brochures never cover, and it is the part I find most buyers actually want to know. Based on Hellenbrand's published documentation and what installers report in trade forums, here is the hardware:
The Control Valve
Hellenbrand's ProMate 6.0 controller is, per plumbing-forum discussions among installers, built on the Clack WS1 valve platform with Hellenbrand's own electronics and programming layered on top. Installers on DIY and trade forums describe it the same way: a Clack valve body with Hellenbrand's branding and firmware. That is not a knock. The Clack WS1 is one of the best residential control valves ever made, which is exactly why dealers build on it. But it is worth knowing that the "brain" of a $4,000 installed Iron Curtain is the same valve family available on systems that cost half as much. (I attribute this to installer reports because Hellenbrand does not publicly document the valve's origin; their own manual only describes the programming.)
The Media Bed
The IC 2.0's filter tank uses a four-layer multi-media depth bed: large, light particles on top, progressively heavier and finer media below, and a support bed at the bottom, per Hellenbrand's owner's manual. Hellenbrand does not name the specific media in the consumer documentation, so I will not guess at brands. The layered-depth approach is a legitimate design: it fights surface caking and extends filter runs. Note that this is a mechanical filter bed for catching oxidized particles; it is not a catalytic media like Katalox Light, which actively participates in the oxidation reaction. The Vortech Plate (Yes, the Same One We Use)
Here is something the comparison sites get wrong: current Iron Curtain models use a Vortech distributor plate, which Hellenbrand says saves up to 20 gallons of water per regeneration. Our Katalox Light systems are built on Vortech tanks too. On this specific component, the Iron Curtain and our systems are equals, and both are ahead of the gravel-underbed designs still common in Birm and Greensand systems.
The Aeration Assembly
The twin-tank IC 2.0 uses a dedicated 110V aeration pump and a Macromatic timer to recharge the air head, plus an inlet check valve to keep air from escaping backward. That is more hardware than a single-tank AIO needs: an AIO valve draws its air pocket during backwash with no separate pump, no timer, no second tank. More components is not automatically worse, but it is more line items that can fail, and under Hellenbrand's warranty the aeration pump assembly internals are covered for five years, with labor never included.
The Fine Print: Operating Limits Straight From the Manual
Every filter has operating limits. Hellenbrand publishes theirs plainly in the owner's manual, and they matter more than the brochure does, because water outside these limits can void the warranty or simply not get treated. From the IC 2.0 owner's manual:
Iron Curtain 2.0 Official Operating Conditions
- pH must be 7.0 or higher "for iron oxidation reaction to proceed per the engineering specifications." A lot of well water in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast runs 5.5 to 7.0, which means an acid neutralizer becomes a required add-on (and a bigger quote).
- Iron maximum: 10 ppm (ferrous and/or ferric). Above that, the manual says consult the factory.
- Manganese limit: 2.0 ppm, and "for optimum manganese reduction, pH should be greater than 8.5." Almost no residential well runs pH 8.5.
- Hydrogen sulfide maximum: 10 ppm, and H2S consumes roughly 7 times the oxygen iron does, so sulfur-heavy water forces much more frequent air recharges.
- Tannins above 0.5 ppm void the performance claims outright. Iron bacteria requires chlorination to control.
- TDS above 750 ppm voids the performance claims.
- Backwash frequency scales with iron: every 3rd day at 0.3 to 3 ppm, every other day at 3 to 6 ppm, every day at 6 to 10 ppm. Daily backwash is real water usage, worth knowing on a low-yield well or septic system.
These limits are not hypothetical. Just this month, a homeowner emailed us while comparing our systems against the Hellenbrand ProMate 6.0 IC Junior. His water: roughly 7 ppm iron, hydrogen sulfide present, pH 6.8, TDS around 1,300. Read that against the specs above. His pH is below the Iron Curtain's stated 7.0 floor, his TDS is nearly double the 750 ppm limit, and his 7 ppm iron alone is above the IC Junior's 4 ppm combined iron + sulfide rating. The spec sheet itself was warning him off; he just needed someone to confirm what it meant. That is exactly the kind of thing Aidan checks when you send him a water test.
The Warranty, Decoded
Hellenbrand's filter warranty (published in the same manual) is: 5 years on the control valve electricals and body (excluding internal parts), 5 years on the aeration assembly (excluding internals, solenoid, and air pump assemblies), 10 years on fiberglass tanks up to 13" diameter, and 1 year on the system as a whole. Three clauses deserve attention:
- It is non-transferable and location-locked. Coverage terminates if you sell the house or move the system.
- Labor is never included. You pay the dealer's service rates and freight even on valid warranty claims.
- Service by anyone other than an authorized Hellenbrand seller voids it. That is the lock-in mechanism: for the warranty period, you are committed to that dealer's pricing.
None of this is unusual for dealer-channel equipment, but you should read it before signing a quote, not after.

Iron Curtain (Hellenbrand) and Iron Breaker (Charger)
The Hellenbrand Iron Curtain is a two-tank aeration system. The first tank injects air into your water to oxidize dissolved (ferrous) iron into filterable (ferric) iron. The second tank contains a bed of filter media that catches the oxidized particles. Charger's Iron Breaker III applies the same oxidation principle in a single tank, holding a compressed air pocket at the top of the media bed; we tear down exactly what that system is, valve by valve, in our Charger IronBreaker breakdown.
These systems work. They have been on the market for years, and when properly sized and maintained, they remove iron, sulfur, and manganese without chemicals. The ProMate 6 Iron Curtain 2.0 is the current flagship model, and the original Iron Curtain design was validated by the Water Quality Association under their S-200 filter standard.
Where They Fall Short
- Dealer-only distribution. You cannot buy an Iron Curtain or Iron Breaker direct. You must go through an authorized dealer, which means a markup on the equipment plus a charge for professional installation. Documented pricing starts around $1,800 for the single-tank Junior, and the installed twin-tank quotes homeowners report to us typically run $3,000 to $5,000 or more depending on your area.
- No DIY option. These systems are designed for professional installation. If something goes wrong in five years, you are calling the dealer for a service visit, and the warranty requires that the servicer be an authorized Hellenbrand seller.
- Proprietary parts and media. Replacement media is sourced through the dealer network. You are tied to their supply chain and pricing for the life of the equipment.
- Two tanks instead of one. Two tanks require more floor space in your utility room or basement, plus a 110V aeration pump and timer the single-tank approach does not need. The AIO approach achieves the same air injection in a single tank, saving space and simplifying plumbing.
- Tighter water chemistry window than the brochure suggests. pH 7.0+ required, 10 ppm iron max, 2 ppm manganese, 750 TDS ceiling (see the fine-print section above). Plenty of real wells fall outside that window.
The Honest Assessment
If you have a trusted local dealer who provides responsive service and fair pricing, the Iron Curtain or Iron Breaker will treat your iron. The technology is sound. The question is whether the dealer markup and ongoing service dependency are worth it, especially when the same oxidation principle is available in a single-tank AIO system at a fraction of the installed cost.
Birm Filter Systems
Birm is a lightweight filter media manufactured by Clack Corporation. It is coated with manganese dioxide, which acts as a catalyst to convert dissolved iron into a filterable form. On paper, Birm is attractive: no chemicals, low cost, and simple backwashing.
The Limitations
In practice, Birm has significant restrictions that many sellers understate:
Birm's Three Dealbreakers
- pH must be 6.8 or higher. Below 6.8, Birm simply stops working. Most well water in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast runs between 5.5 and 7.0. If your pH is below 6.8 (and many wells are), you either need an acid neutralizer upstream or Birm is off the table entirely.
- Iron capacity tops out around 3 to 5 ppm in practice. Birm is rated for up to 10 ppm in ideal conditions, but field performance tells a different story. Above 5 ppm, Birm beds channel, foul prematurely, and fail to produce clean water consistently.
- No sulfur removal. If your water has any rotten-egg odor (hydrogen sulfide), Birm will not touch it. You will need an entirely separate system for sulfur.
We used Birm in our systems years ago. We stopped. When we switched to Katalox Light, the difference in performance and reliability was significant enough that we shipped replacement media to customers who had received Birm. That is not a marketing claim; it is what we actually did.
Birm can work for a narrow set of conditions: low iron (under 3 ppm), pH above 7.0, no sulfur, no manganese. Outside of that window, it is the wrong choice.
Greensand (Manganese Greensand Plus) Systems
Greensand is a step up from Birm in terms of iron capacity and pH flexibility. Manganese Greensand Plus handles 10 to 15 ppm of iron, works at a lower pH (around 6.2+), and can remove manganese effectively.
The tradeoff: Greensand requires potassium permanganate (KMnO4) for regeneration.
The Chemical Maintenance Problem
Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizer. It is what regenerates the Greensand media, restoring its ability to capture iron. Here is what that actually looks like for a homeowner:
- You need a chemical feed pump and a solution tank installed alongside the filter
- You mix the KMnO4 solution yourself, typically every few weeks
- If you overdose, the chemical bleeds into your water supply, turning it pink or purple and staining fixtures
- If you underdose, the media loses its ability to filter and iron breaks through
- Annual chemical cost runs $100 to $200+ depending on your iron load
One of our recent callers was replacing a WaterRite Greensand system after six years. The chemical feed maintenance was the primary reason for the switch. He moved to a Katalox Light AIO system, eliminating the chemical hassle entirely.
Greensand is effective when maintained perfectly. The question is whether you want to commit to that level of ongoing chemical management when chemical-free alternatives exist.
AIO + Katalox Light: Why This Wins on Merits
Katalox Light is a lightweight, catalytic filter media made from MnO2-coated zeolite. Paired with a Fleck 2510AIO valve (Air Injection Oxidation), it achieves the same chemical-free iron removal as the Iron Curtain's two-tank approach, but in a single tank.
How It Works
The AIO valve draws in a pocket of air during each backwash cycle and holds it in the top of the tank. As raw well water passes through this air pocket, dissolved iron, sulfur, and manganese are oxidized on contact. The oxidized particles then pass into the Katalox Light media bed, which traps and holds them. During the next backwash, the captured contaminants are flushed to drain and a fresh air pocket is drawn in. The cycle repeats automatically.
Why It Outperforms the Alternatives
- 30 ppm iron capacity. Triple the Iron Curtain's manual-stated 10 ppm rating, and more than double Greensand. For extreme iron situations (we have customers above 20 ppm), this is often the only media that works reliably.
- Removes iron, sulfur, and manganese simultaneously. One system replaces what might otherwise require two or three separate tanks.
- No chemicals, ever. Unlike Greensand, there is no chemical feed system to install, maintain, or refill. The AIO air injection handles all oxidation.
- Works at lower pH. Katalox Light functions down to approximately pH 5.8 with the AIO air injection, compared to Birm's hard floor of 6.8 and the Iron Curtain manual's stated 7.0 requirement.
- 10+ year media life. We have systems in the field approaching a decade with the original media still performing. Compare that to Birm (3 to 5 years) or Greensand (5 to 8 years).
