Costco Water Softener (2026): How the EcoWater Program Works, What Members Actually Pay, and What the Comparable Hardware Class Costs Online

Water Softener Pricing Guide

Costco Water Softener (2026): How the EcoWater Program Works, What It Costs, and What the Comparable Hardware Class Costs Online

Costco does not sell water softeners in the warehouse. It refers you to a local EcoWater dealer, who sets the price and does the install. Costco's part is a 10% Shop Card and a member warranty whose terms are not published. Here is how the program works, what members have paid, and what the same class of equipment costs direct.

For the teardown of EcoWater's hardware, see our EcoWater cost guide. This page is a spoke of our water softener brands comparison. Sizing and softener basics live in the complete water softener guide.

The Short Answer: What a Costco Water Softener Is and Costs

A "Costco water softener" is an EcoWater system sold and installed by a local EcoWater dealer. Members have reported roughly $3,000 to $5,000 for a softener alone (mostly 2021 reports) and $6,000 to $10,000 for the refiner plus reverse osmosis bundle most dealers propose today, before the Shop Card. Every quote is linked in the table below.

  • Costco stocks salt, not softeners. Costco.com sells softener salt, an under-sink RO, and electronic "water conditioners" that do not soften water. The actual softeners come through the dealer referral program.
  • The Costco benefit is a 10% Shop Card on qualifying whole-home bundles, issued after your completion paperwork is signed. It is store credit, not a discount off the invoice.
  • Costco's return policy does not cover custom installed programs. Your exit is the federal three-business-day cancellation right, then the dealer's contract.
  • Kinetico is Costco Canada only. The U.S. program is EcoWater.
  • The middle path: a comparable class of pro-grade metered softener (Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 grain, $1,995) plus your own plumber typically lands at $2,300 to $3,500 installed. Sizing help is free: call Aidan at 800-460-5810.

Does Costco Sell Water Softeners?

Some roundup articles claim Costco stocks boxed GE or Whirlpool softeners. As of September 2026 I could not find one softener for sale on Costco.com. House Digest reached the same conclusion: Costco does not sell other softener brands, it partners with EcoWater (House Digest). Here is what Costco actually sells.

Sold on Costco.com or in the warehouse Sold through the Costco Water Treatment program (a dealer sells and installs it)
Water softener salt. Diamond Crystal 40 lb bags are a warehouse staple. Source: Costco Business Delivery listing EcoWater softeners (ECR3700 series), refiners (ERR3700 / ERR3702, softener plus carbon in one tank), problem-water filters, and reverse osmosis systems (ERO385, HERO385+), usually proposed as a "whole home bundle." Source: Costco EcoWater program page
Under-sink reverse osmosis (Pure Blue Home 4-stage). Drinking water only, not whole-house treatment. Source: Costco.com listing In-home water test, sizing, quote, permits, and installation by the local authorized EcoWater dealer. Costco's page says most installs finish in one day.
Electronic "water conditioners" (Calmat, ScaleBlaster). Wire-coil anti-scale devices. They do not remove hardness minerals and are not softeners. Source: Costco.com Calmat listing Financing from the dealer or its lender, not Costco. Costco's program page does not mention financing.
Nothing from Kinetico, Culligan, GE, or Whirlpool. Walk in expecting a softener and you leave with salt. A 10% Costco Shop Card on qualifying whole-home bundles and an "extended warranty" for members whose terms Costco says vary and are explained by the consultant.

So a Costco water softener is an EcoWater softener sold by a local dealer, with Costco as the referral partner. That matters for everything that follows. The price, the return rights, and the service relationship all belong to the dealer, not to Costco.

How the Costco EcoWater Program Works

Costco's page describes four steps: schedule an appointment, get a quote after a water test, have a professional install, then receive the Shop Card and warranty. Here is the same process with the part they leave out: who is actually on your doorstep at each step. Red is Costco, blue is the local dealer.

1

You request the appointment

Through the Costco.com EcoWater page, a warehouse kiosk, or the Costco EcoWater program phone line. Non-members are steered to buy a membership first.

2

A dealer rep tests and quotes

An EcoWater dealer's salesperson tests hardness and a few basics, then presents a quote, usually a refiner plus RO bundle. Members describe visits of about two hours. The dealer sets the number.

You sign, finance, and get installed

Contract, deposit, and any promotional financing are with the dealer and its lender. The dealer crew installs, typically in one day, and you sign completion paperwork.

Costco

Two things stand out. Costco touches the process only at the beginning and the end. Everything that determines your price and your experience, the test, the sizing, the quote, the financing, the install, and the service afterward, is the dealer.

Second, there is no single national "Costco price." Costco's footnote says to "see your dealer representative for details," and member quotes for the same model vary by thousands of dollars between markets. One Houston member was told the price "is already set by Costco and non-negotiable" (r/Costco, December 2023). I cannot verify what that salesperson was told to say. The dollar figures below do not look like one price list.

The 10% Shop Card: What It Covers, When It Arrives, What It Excludes

The Shop Card is the tangible Costco benefit, so it deserves the fine print. Everything here is from the footnote on Costco's EcoWater page (costco.com/ecowater.html), read in September 2026:

  • Amount: 10% of the pretax price of installed purchases made through the Costco Home Improvement Installed Products program. The headline says "Qualifying Water Treatment Whole Home Bundle Purchases," so a softener-only sale may or may not qualify. Ask the rep to put it in writing.
  • Exclusions: Costco names "prep work or additional products" as costs that do not count toward the 10%. Loop work, electrical, or a new drain line can fall outside the base.
  • Timing: a digital card within 7 days of Costco receiving your signed completion paperwork; plastic up to 4 weeks. You do not get it at signing, and it does not reduce the financed amount.
  • Form: store credit. Members who report "net" prices have already subtracted it, which is fair if you were going to spend that money at Costco anyway.
  • Stacking: Executive members earn their 2% annual reward, and the Costco Anywhere Visa adds 2% (House Digest confirms the Executive reward applies). One member's 2026 math: a $7,990 refiner plus a $900 RO, minus an $829 Shop Card and $169 in Visa rewards, netted $7,744 (r/WaterTreatment).

Here is the honest way to think about it. A 10% card on a $7,500 bundle is $750, real money. But if the bundle is priced $3,000 to $4,000 above a comparable hardware class installed by a local plumber, the card is paid out of a markup you funded. It is a reason to choose Costco over a non-Costco EcoWater dealer, not a reason to choose the dealer route.

What Members Have Paid: Documented Costco Water Softener Quotes

These are quotes people posted with enough detail to be useful. I kept the dollar figures as written, noted the year and region, and linked every source. These are dealer prices for EcoWater equipment sold through the Costco program. They are not Costco list prices, because there is no such thing.

When / where What was quoted Reported price Source
2021, multiple U.S. members Softener for a 3,500 sq ft home; RO add-on; softener plus carbon tank with a 10-year transferable warranty $4,200 softener, RO an additional $1,600; another member ~$5,000; another "over $3,000"; softener plus carbon tank $6,000 to $8,000; one $4,600 installed before a then-15% Costco cash card r/Costco, "Costco EcoWater reviews"
December 2023, Houston TX ERR3702 refiner; member noted the ERR3700 was quoted at $3,600 to $6,000 in other cities $6,000 to $10,000 range; told the price was set and non-negotiable r/Costco, "EcoWater water softener"
Undated, U.S. member Softener, installed About $5,000 with a $500 Costco card back Houzz discussion
December 2025, Virginia ERR3700 refiner plus ERO385 RO, installed, from a Costco-affiliated EcoWater dealer $8,000 with a $765 Costco gift card r/WaterTreatment, "Is this EcoWater Costco offer worth it?"
2026, Dallas TX (new build, on a softener loop) ERR3700R20 refiner plus RO385 $7,990 refiner + $900 RO; 10% Shop Card $829 and 2% Visa $169 brought the net to $7,744 r/WaterTreatment, "EcoWater ERR3700R20 and RO385 new house quote"
2026, U.S. member comparing three dealers Costco / EcoWater vs Culligan vs a local Enpress-based quote About $6,500 after rebates for EcoWater; Culligan ~$6,500; Enpress ~$7,500. A water treatment pro in the thread said his shop installs a dual-tank system on dual Clack WS1 valves for $3,500 to $3,750 r/WaterTreatment, "Costco EcoWater softener vs Culligan vs local"
2024, Illinois EcoWater softener plus RO from the Costco program Member reported a local plumber's quote was $1,500 to $2,000 less than Costco / EcoWater r/WaterTreatment, "Costco EcoWater softener + RO worth it?"

Two patterns. The 2021 softener-only quotes cluster around $3,000 to $5,000. The 2023 to 2026 quotes are almost all refiner-plus-RO bundles at $6,000 to $10,000. That tracks with what Costco's page advertises (whole home bundles) and with what shows up in our own inbox.

In the last two years, two Maryland homeowners on private wells sent us Costco-program EcoWater proposals to review. One, in late winter, was about $9,000 for a softener, a filter, a replacement control head, and installation. The other, for a new-construction well home, bundled an ERO385 RO, a HERO385+, a sediment filter, a chemical feed pump, and a UV light on a "Costco Members" water test worksheet.

My reply to both was the same thing I will tell you: the equipment is legitimate, and the price is roughly double what the same job costs with comparable pro-grade hardware and a local plumber. We searched our call transcripts and reviews for Costco too. Those two emails are our only first-party Costco cases, so I am not going to pretend we have a large sample.

What the Dealer Is Actually Selling You

I will keep this short. The full EcoWater teardown, including the refiner design, the proprietary valve, the RO cartridges, and the warranty chart, is in our EcoWater Systems cost guide. Here is what you need for the Costco decision specifically.

The centerpiece of nearly every 2023 to 2026 Costco quote is an ERR3700-series refiner: one tank holding both softening resin and a layer of carbon, run by EcoWater's own electronic valve, often with the HydroLink Plus Wi-Fi option. The design is compact and convenient. The tradeoff is that everything inside is EcoWater-specific, so valve parts, electronics, and rebedding go through an EcoWater dealer rather than any plumbing supply house.

EcoWater's published warranty on the 3700 ERR series is lifetime on the mineral and brine tanks, 10 years on the valve body, 7 years on the electronics faceplate, 5 years on other parts, and no labor coverage (EcoWater warranty chart). Whatever "extended warranty" Costco members receive layers on top of that, but Costco publishes no terms. Ask the rep for the document before you sign.

The RO in the bundle (ERO385 or HERO385+) is a proprietary-cartridge under-sink system. It is a fine RO. The cost to ask about is the annual filter set, which one Virginia member reported the dealer wanted to sell at a premium (r/WaterTreatment).

Watch for the word "conditioner"

Two separate threads describe a Costco EcoWater rep explaining that the recommended system "is not a softener" but a "conditioner" (r/WaterTreatment PSA thread).

Another describes a salt-free system the buyer later found did not reduce hardness (r/WaterTreatment).

If your hardness is over about 7 grains per gallon and you want soft water, you need an ion-exchange softener that uses salt. A salt-free system or "conditioner" will not give you soft water, no matter who sells it.

Can You Return It? Costco's Policy vs the Federal Three-Day Rule

Costco's satisfaction guarantee does not work the way you expect here

Costco's return policy carves out "Special Order Kiosk and Custom Installed Programs." Custom products made to a member's specifications "cannot be returned or refunded, except for warranty repair/replacement due to failure to meet specifications" (Costco returns policy). A system sized, quoted, and plumbed into your house through the installed products program is a custom installed purchase. The "return anything, any time" experience you have with a TV does not apply.

What you do have is the federal Cooling-Off Rule. Because the sale is made in your home and is over $25, you can cancel without penalty until midnight of the third business day after you sign. You do it by mailing (ideally certified) the cancellation form the seller must give you (FTC, Cooling-Off Rule). Saturday counts as a business day; Sunday and federal holidays do not.

One EcoWater buyer used exactly that window after a next-day change of heart; we cover that account in the EcoWater guide. After three business days, your recourse is the dealer's contract and EcoWater's warranty. Some members report Costco member services helps as an escalation path, but Costco does not formally promise that anywhere I could find.

Practical advice: do not let the dealer install inside the three-day window unless you are certain. Once the system is plumbed in and the completion paperwork is signed, you own it.

After the Install: Warranty, Service, Salt, and Who You Call

Day to day, a Costco EcoWater system is a dealer relationship. A few things members and our own customers have run into:

  • Service calls go to the dealer, not Costco. Parts are EcoWater-specific, so the dealer is your only realistic source for a valve rebuild, a faceplate, or a rebed. Members generally report the dealers are responsive. The issue is that you have one choice.
  • Labor is not covered by EcoWater's standard warranty (chart linked above). Ask whether the Costco "extended warranty" adds labor, for how long, and get it on paper.
  • Long-term costs show up around year 10. One member who bought through Costco a decade earlier reported a leaking tank, RO membrane failures, and an EcoWater replacement quote of about $5,000 (r/WaterTreatment). A standard-valve softener at that age is typically a few hundred dollars in rebuild parts from any supply house.
  • Salt is where Costco genuinely helps. A member reported the dealer delivers salt at the same per-bag price Costco charges (r/Costco), and the 40 lb Diamond Crystal bags in the warehouse are as cheap as softener salt gets. That is true whichever softener you own.
  • Financing surprises. One buyer reported being told the financing was 48 months no interest, then being charged about $1,600 in interest at 12 months (PissedConsumer complaint, 2023). I cannot verify the individual case, and complaint sites skew negative. I include it because the promotional period is the single most important line in any deferred-interest financing paperwork.

Does Costco Sell Kinetico? (Only in Canada)

A lot of people search "Kinetico water softener Costco." In the United States, no. The U.S. program is EcoWater only. The Kinetico partnership is Costco Canada, where Kinetico has been the partner since 2007 and members receive a $100 Shop Card per $1,000 spent, up to $1,000, excluding installation and accessories (Costco Canada Kinetico program).

If you are comparing Kinetico on its own merits, our Kinetico cost guide covers the dealer model and the non-electric twin-tank design. Note that Home Depot runs a similar EcoWater referral program in the U.S. (per House Digest), so the same dealer may quote you under two store brands.

When the Costco Route Is the Right Call

I sell a different approach, so I owe you the cases where Costco's program is the better answer. There are real ones.

You want one accountable company and zero project management

Test, quote, install, permits, warranty, salt delivery, and service from one dealer, with Costco's brand behind it. If you do not want to find a plumber or think about sizing, that is what the premium buys. Fully managed is a legitimate thing to pay for.

Your house has no softener loop and a hard install

One member found that adding a loop cost around $3,000 on its own, which brought a self-sourced system close to the Costco bundle price (r/WaterTreatment). When plumbing is most of the cost, the equipment markup matters less.

You were going to buy from a dealer anyway

If it is EcoWater versus Culligan versus Kinetico, all dealer-installed, the 10% Shop Card plus the Executive 2% makes the Costco-affiliated EcoWater dealer the cheaper dealer route in most reported comparisons.

You plan to sell the house soon

A transferable dealer warranty on a recognizable brand, backed by a Costco program, is easy for a buyer's inspector to understand. That has resale value an online-bought system, however good, does not.

Where the Costco Route Costs You

You pay a markup, then get 10% of it back

The card comes off a dealer-set price. Multiple members found local plumbers quoting a comparable system $1,500 to $2,000 less, or a third to a fifth of the Costco figure in the 2023 Houston thread.

Proprietary parts for the life of the system

Valve, electronics, RO cartridges: dealer-only. Clack and Fleck-family valves are serviced by any water treatment shop, and parts are sold everywhere. At year 10, that difference is thousands of dollars.

Bundle creep

The RO that adds $900 to $1,600 to a Costco quote is a $300 to $600 class of product your plumber installs in an afternoon. The bundle is where the total climbs from $5,000 to $8,000.

Return rights are thinner than you think

No Costco return on custom installed programs. Three business days under the federal rule, then it is the dealer contract.

The Middle Path: Comparable Hardware Class, Transparent Price, Your Plumber

Between "let a dealer manage everything for $7,500" and "buy a big-box softener and hope" there is a middle path. You buy the same class of professional metered softener the trade installs, on a Fleck or Clack valve with parts sold everywhere, at a published price. I size it with you by phone from your water test, at no charge. You install it or hand it to a local plumber.

Costco / EcoWater program

Fully Managed, Dealer Priced

  • Price set by dealer: $6,000 to $10,000 for refiner + RO, $3,000 to $5,000 softener only (reported)
  • 10% Shop Card after completion; Executive 2%
  • Proprietary EcoWater valve, electronics, RO cartridges
  • Standard warranty has no labor; Costco extended warranty terms unpublished
  • Service and parts through the installing dealer
  • No plumber to find
VS
Comparable hardware online

Pro Hardware, Your Plumber

Worked example: the most common Costco bundle

A refiner does two jobs, softening and carbon filtration. The comparable two-tank approach is a 48,000 grain Fleck 5600SXT at $1,995 plus the 2.5 cu ft Clack carbon filter at $1,695, or $3,690 in hardware. Add $400 to $1,500 for a plumber and you are at $4,100 to $5,200 installed.

Against the $6,000 to $10,000 reported bundle quotes, that is $1,500 to $5,000 kept, with a separate carbon tank you can rebed for a couple hundred dollars in media instead of replacing a combined unit. For 24-hour soft water like a dealer twin-tank, the 64,000 grain Fleck 9100SXT at $2,695 is the analog. Prices are Mid Atlantic Water list prices as of September 2026; check the product pages for current pricing.

The Reddit threads corroborate this independently of us. A local shop installing a 48,000 grain Clack WS1 softener for $1,400 all in (r/Costco). A pro quoting a dual-tank system on two Clack WS1 valves at $3,500 to $3,750 installed (r/WaterTreatment). Same class of equipment, a fraction of the bundle.

Sizing is where people go wrong on their own, so do not skip it. Our softener sizing guide covers the grains math, and Clack vs Fleck explains the two valve families the trade uses. If chlorine taste is why a refiner was proposed, carbon filter and water softener explains why we recommend separate tanks. For any dealer proposal, how to read a water treatment dealer quote is the checklist I use on the phone.

Two ways to get an answer before you sign anything

If you have the Costco proposal in hand: call Aidan at 800-460-5810 or text a photo to 443-277-2204. He will tell you, for free, whether the sizing is right and what the comparable hardware costs. If the quote is fair for what you want, he will say so.

If nobody has tested your water beyond hardness: run a certified lab test first, the city water test kit or the well water test kit ($199 each, results reviewed with you). No system, from any seller, should be sized off a two-minute hardness strip.

How we put this together, and what we have not done

Mid Atlantic Water sells Fleck and Clack-family equipment online, so we compete with the dealer channel this program uses. We have not purchased through the Costco program or installed an EcoWater refiner ourselves.

Program mechanics come from Costco's EcoWater page and returns policy; warranty terms from EcoWater's published chart; prices from member posts on Reddit and Houzz, linked above, plus two anonymized proposals customers emailed us. Shop Card terms, dealer pricing, and financing offers change, so verify current terms with Costco and the dealer. Last reviewed September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a water softener cost at Costco?

Costco does not publish a price because it does not sell the softener; a local EcoWater dealer quotes it after an in-home test. Members have reported roughly $3,000 to $5,000 for a softener alone (mostly 2021 reports) and $6,000 to $10,000 for the refiner plus reverse osmosis bundle most dealers propose in 2023 to 2026, before a 10% Costco Shop Card.

Regional variation is large; the same ERR3700 refiner has been reported at $3,600 in one market and $7,990 in another.

Does Costco actually sell water softeners in the warehouse?

No. Costco.com and the warehouse sell water softener salt, an under-sink reverse osmosis system, and electronic anti-scale "water conditioners" that do not soften water. Actual softeners, refiners, and whole-home systems are sold through Costco's Water Treatment referral program, where an authorized EcoWater dealer sells and installs the equipment.

How much does Costco charge to install a water softener?

Costco does not charge for installation; the EcoWater dealer does, and it is normally rolled into one installed price rather than listed separately. Costco's program page says most installations are completed in one day. Prep work outside the base install (adding a softener loop or a drain, for example) is billed by the dealer and, per Costco's footnote, may be excluded from the 10% Shop Card calculation.

How does the 10% Costco Shop Card work on a water softener?

The card is 10% of the pretax installed price of qualifying whole-home water treatment bundles bought through the Costco Home Improvement Installed Products program, excluding items such as prep work or additional products. A digital Shop Card is issued within about 7 days of Costco receiving your signed completion paperwork; a plastic card can take up to 4 weeks.

It is store credit and does not reduce the amount you finance. Executive members also earn their 2% annual reward on the purchase.

Can I return a Costco water softener if I am not happy?

Generally not under Costco's return policy. Costco excludes "Special Order Kiosk and Custom Installed Programs," stating that custom products made to a member's specifications cannot be returned or refunded except for warranty repair or replacement. Your practical exit is the federal Cooling-Off Rule, which lets you cancel an in-home sale over $25 by written notice postmarked within three business days of signing. After that, you rely on the dealer's contract and EcoWater's warranty.

Does Costco sell Kinetico water softeners?

Not in the United States. The U.S. Costco program is EcoWater only. Kinetico is the water treatment partner for Costco Canada, where members get a $100 Costco Shop Card per $1,000 spent, up to $1,000, excluding installation and accessories.

Are Costco water softeners worth it?

If you want a fully managed install with one accountable dealer, and you would otherwise buy from a Culligan or Kinetico dealer, the Costco EcoWater route is usually the least expensive dealer option once the Shop Card and Executive reward are counted.

If value is the priority, the same class of professional metered softener (Fleck or Clack valve) bought online for $1,495 to $2,695 and installed by a local plumber typically totals $2,300 to $5,200, with parts available anywhere. Most members who compared both found the Costco bundle $1,500 to $4,000 higher.

Is the Costco EcoWater system the same as one from a regular EcoWater dealer?

Yes. It is the same EcoWater product line (ECR and ERR3700-series softeners and refiners, ERO385 and HERO385+ reverse osmosis) sold by the same authorized dealers. What the Costco program adds is the 10% Shop Card, an extended warranty for members whose terms Costco says are explained by the consultant, and Costco member services as an informal escalation path. Home Depot runs a similar EcoWater referral program.
