  • The number one factor is your pH. For most homes at a pH of 5.5 to 6.0, the 2.5 cubic foot non-backwashing calcite neutralizer is the right call.

How Your pH Level Sets the Size

pH is the number one thing we take into consideration when sizing a pH neutralizer. The lower your pH, the more neutralizing media you need, and the bigger the tank. Household size then nudges the recommendation up or down. Here is how those two factors come together in the real recommendations we make on the phone every day.

Non-Backwashing vs. Backwashing: The Iron Question

The most common question we get is: "Should I install a non-backwashing acid neutralizer or a backwashing acid neutralizer?" And the very first thing we ask back is, "Do you have iron in the water?"

If the answer is no iron, the non-backwashing acid neutralizer is the best, most cost-effective way to go. Water flows up through the calcite bed, the media slowly dissolves to raise pH, and there is no electricity, no drain line, and no backwash cycle to set up. It is the system most homes should buy.

If you have 0.5 or above on the iron scale, we recommend a backwashing acid neutralizer instead. A non-backwashing tank has no way to flush trapped iron, so it would gradually foul and lose performance. The backwashing design periodically rinses the bed and sends the iron to drain, which keeps it working in iron-bearing water. Do You Need to Add FloMag?

Right before ordering, people often call and ask, "Do I need to add FloMag?" Here is the honest rule we use.

If your pH is 5.5 and you are ordering a 2.5 cubic foot non-backwashing neutralizer, plain calcite typically works great on its own. But if your pH is lower, around 5.3 or below, calcite alone struggles to bring it all the way up, so we recommend blending in FloMag (a magnesium oxide media that raises pH more aggressively than calcite).

How to blend FloMag with calcite

Mix in two pounds of FloMag per bag of calcite. Dump it in a bin, mix it well, add it to the tank, and repeat that process until you have used all five bags of calcite that come with the unit. That gives you an even blend throughout the bed.

Do You Need a Water Softener Too?

The other question that comes up is, "Do I need a water softener after I install this acid neutralizer?" There is a real reason to ask, and it has to do with how a calcite neutralizer works.

When the acid neutralizer raises your pH, it does so by dissolving calcite into the water, which adds calcium. That means your hardness level goes up, usually by about three to four grains per gallon. If your hardness ends up under seven grains, you can typically get away without a softener.

But the math can push you over. If your raw water hardness is six and your pH is 5.5, after the neutralizer your hardness may climb to 10 or 11 grains.
