Not sure what size pressure tank you need? Pressure tank sizing depends on your pump flow rate, your pressure switch settings, and how many fixtures run at once in your home. Send Aidan your pump model and well details and he will tell you exactly which Well-X-Trol size is right for you (and whether the WX-203 is overkill or undersized for your setup). 29 years of well water experience, no scripts.
Why this tank exists: The WX-250 is the high-drawdown Pro Series tank - about 17 gal of usable drawdown at 30/50 PSI. It's the right pick when a household has high water demand (multiple bathrooms running simultaneously, irrigation, large families), runs a high-flow pump (15+ GPM), or uses a constant-pressure / VFD pump that benefits from longer tank run-time. Same 22 in. diameter as the WX-205 and the same $1,695 price, just 6 in. taller for ~30% more drawdown.

The Tank

  • Authentic Amtrol Well-X-Trol WX-250 Professional - the genuine 44 gallon (167L) Pro series well tank, sourced through an Amtrol authorized distributor channel. Not a Pro-Source, WaterWorker, or other private-label knockoff.
  • 36 in. tall x 22 in. diameter - roughly 17 gal usable drawdown at 30/50 PSI. Biggest drawdown in the Pro Series line without stepping up to commercial WX-302/WX-350 territory.
  • High Strength Steel shell with Tuf-Kote HG Blue indoor/outdoor finish (deep-drawn domes for twice the strength of rolled steel)
  • Stainless steel system connection - resists corrosion in aggressive water
  • Heavy-duty butyl diaphragm with antimicrobial liner
  • Patented Turbulator water circulator (prevents stagnation and sediment buildup)
  • Wide composite Pro-base stand - corrosion-free 19 in. diameter base sized to the 22 in. shell
  • Factory pre-charged to 38 PSI, projection-welded air valve

The Brass Tank Tee Package (TFP3-RV)

  • Brass tank tee with 1 in. NPT connections (matches the WX-250's 1 in. NPTF system connection)
  • Brass spindle / dip tube for proper tank draw
  • 0-100 PSI liquid-filled pressure gauge
  • 75 PSI pressure relief valve (ASME-style, code-required)
  • Brass boiler drain for system flushing and winterization
  • Square D / Pumptrol-style pressure switch (factory set 30/50 PSI, field-adjustable)

Mid Atlantic Water Service

  • Free LTL freight shipping to all lower 48 states - palletized, strapped, and insured
  • 7-year warranty backed by Mid Atlantic Water through our authorized distributor channel
  • Pre-purchase sizing help from Aidan, our 29-year well water expert
  • 7 day a week phone & text support during installation
  • 30 day satisfaction guarantee
What's not included: Pump, check valve, union, and pipe nipples for the discharge side. Most installs need a 1 in. brass union and a few short nipples to connect the tank tee to your existing plumbing - call us at 800-460-5810 if you want a parts list specific to your install.
Form-factor comparison vs the other Pro Series tanks:
WX-250: 36 in. tall x 22 in. diameter, ~17 gal drawdown, 53 lbs
WX-205: 30 in. tall x 22 in. diameter, ~13 gal drawdown, 39 lbs
WX-203: 47 in. tall x 15 in. diameter, ~12 gal drawdown, 47 lbs
Same 22 in. diameter as the WX-205 and the same price - the WX-250 just trades 6 in. more height for 30% more drawdown. If you have the vertical clearance, the WX-250 beats the WX-205 on every metric. Vs the WX-203, the WX-250 gives you about 44% more drawdown for $400 more.

Set the pre-charge correctly. This is the #1 cause of premature bladder failure. Your tank must be pre-charged to 2 PSI BELOW your pump cut-in pressure, with no water in the tank. Factory ships at 38 PSI for 40/60 service. For 30/50 service, drop it to 28 PSI.

Footprint & Clearance Requirements

42 in.
Vertical clearance needed (36 in. tank + 6 in. above for air valve service)
28 in.
Floor diameter needed (22 in. shell + 3 in. all sides for plumbing)
53 lbs
Empty weight (one strong person or two for positioning)

Where the Tank Goes (Plumbing Order)

Submersible / Jet Pump Check Valve WX-250 Tank + Tee (this unit) Sediment / Iron / Acid / Softener House

The pressure tank always comes first, immediately after the pump and check valve. All water treatment equipment goes after the tank so it sees pressurized, demand-driven flow.

Installation Steps

  1. Inspect the freight on delivery. Open the box on the driver's pallet jack. Look for dents in the steel shell, damaged stand, or cracked tee package. If anything is dented or compromised, refuse delivery or note it on the BOL and call us at 800-460-5810 the same day.
  2. Place the tank on a level, dry surface. The 22 in. wide WX-250 needs about 28 in. of floor diameter to give you elbow room around the tee fittings. Confirm 42 in. of vertical clearance above the floor for air valve service.
  3. Verify the pre-charge with a tire gauge BEFORE plumbing it in. The valve is on top under the blue cap. Should read 38 PSI from the factory. Adjust to 2 PSI below your pump cut-in (28 PSI for 30/50, 38 PSI for 40/60, 48 PSI for 50/70).
  4. Wrap and thread the brass tee into the 1 in. stainless connection. Use 4-6 wraps of yellow/gas-rated PTFE tape (white tape is rated for water but yellow is more compression resistant on brass). Hand-tight + 2 turns with a pipe wrench.
  5. Plumb the inlet and outlet sides of the tee using 1 in. brass unions for serviceability. Pump discharge connects to one side, house line goes out the other.
  6. Wire the pressure switch per local code (typically a 230V circuit for submersibles, 120V for jet pumps). Set the differential and cut-in/cut-out per pump manufacturer's spec.
  7. Open the boiler drain and a downstream faucet, then turn on the pump. Let air bleed out for 1-2 minutes, close the drain, and verify the system reaches cut-out pressure.
  8. Cycle the pump 3-5 times by drawing water until it kicks on, then letting it fill to cut-out. Verify the gauge reads cut-in (low) and cut-out (high) cleanly without flutter. With ~17 gal of drawdown you'll see noticeably longer run-times between pump cycles than a smaller tank.
Common installation mistake: Skipping the pre-charge check. Many tanks ship at 38 PSI from the factory but they sit in warehouses for months. Always verify with a tire gauge before plumbing in. A wrong pre-charge - even by 10 PSI - is the #1 cause of premature bladder rupture.

A correctly pre-charged Well-X-Trol can run 10-15+ years. The only "maintenance" is checking the air pre-charge once a year and listening for short cycling. That's it.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Annual Check the air pre-charge with a tire gauge. Tank must be empty (cut power to pump, drain water at the boiler drain). Should read 2 PSI below your pump cut-in pressure. Add air with a bicycle pump or compressor if low. Releasing air also OK if too high.
  • Annual Inspect the pressure switch for burned contacts, corrosion, or sluggish response. The switch is the most common failure point in the system (not the tank itself).
  • Annual Listen for short cycling - rapid pump on/off (every few seconds when running a faucet). With ~17 gal of drawdown the WX-250 should give you some of the longest tank runs in the Pro Series line. If you're still hearing cycling, the pre-charge is wrong or the pump cut-in/cut-out needs adjustment.
  • Every 5 years Verify gauge accuracy against a known good tire gauge or test gauge. Cheap pressure gauges drift over time.

Signs Your Tank Needs Attention

  • Pump short cycles (kicks on and off every few seconds) - usually a waterlogged tank or wrong pre-charge. Adjust pre-charge first; if no improvement, the diaphragm has failed.
  • Water comes out of the air valve when you push the pin - the diaphragm has ruptured. Tank needs replacement (this is what your 7-year warranty is for).
  • Visible rust streaks or weeping on the steel shell - structural integrity compromised. Replace.
  • Leak at the brass tee fittings - usually re-doable by re-taping and re-tightening. Don't panic, this is normal after a few years.
Troubleshooting help: Read our Well Pressure Tank Troubleshooting Guide for a step by step diagnostic, or call us at 800-460-5810. Most "bad tank" calls are actually pressure switch problems or pre-charge issues, not the tank itself.

This Is the Real Thing - Sourced Through Amtrol's Authorized Distributor Channel

Same Well-X-Trol Professional shipped to licensed pump installers across the East Coast. Same 7-year warranty period. The difference is who picks up the phone if anything goes wrong: a real water treatment dealer who knows you, not a faceless Amazon seller.

Why Most Online Tank Sellers Cannot Help You With a Warranty Claim

This is straight from Amtrol's official corporate policy:

"Amtrol does not offer Well-X-Trol brand products for sale via the internet, nor does Amtrol authorize its distributors or their customers to resell Well-X-Trol products online. Any Well-X-Trol item purchased from an e-commerce source is ineligible for manufacturer support; including, but not limited to: warranty coverage, product registration, shipping damage claims, product returns, technical assistance and promotional awards." - Amtrol Inc. Well-X-Trol Internet Sales Policy (MC10253, March 2024)

Translation: if you bought your tank from Amazon, eBay, or a random online store and call Amtrol when it fails, you may struggle to get manufacturer support. The warranty technically exists, but you're on your own to figure out the process.

How Mid Atlantic Water Solves This

We source every Well-X-Trol through an Amtrol authorized wholesale distributor channel - the same supply chain that serves licensed pump installers across the East Coast. When you buy from us:

  1. The tank is genuine. Same factory, same SKU, same serial number range as what your local pump installer would put in.
  2. We keep your purchase information on file. Your order date and the tank serial number are recorded from day one for warranty reference.
  3. If a tank fails inside the 7 year window, contact Mid Atlantic Water. Call 800-460-5810 or email support@midatlanticwater.net with a photo of the serial sticker and a description of the problem.
  4. We help you get a replacement through our authorized distributor channel and coordinate the replacement tank shipment to your address. Most replacements ship in 5 to 10 business days.
  5. You don't disappear into a manufacturer call queue. A real person (Aidan, 29 years in well water) walks you through it.

What Amtrol's Warranty Actually Covers

  • 7 years from date of purchase on defects in material and workmanship of the WX-250 tank itself
  • Replacement tank at Amtrol's option (repair, new, or used equivalent)
  • The replacement carries the balance of the original 7 year period (not a new 7 years)

What's NOT covered (per Amtrol's standard warranty):

  • Labor to remove and reinstall the tank
  • Damage from freezing, lightning, flood, or other environmental conditions
  • Failure caused by improper installation or wrong pre-charge (this is why our installation guide above matters)
  • Property damage caused by a leaking tank
One important note: The warranty is for the original purchaser. If you sell your home, the next owner does not inherit the warranty. If you are installing in a rental property, the warranty stays with you (the buyer), not the property.

How Your Tank Ships

  • Freight (LTL) on a 4-way pallet - not parcel. The driver brings it to your driveway with a liftgate.
  • Strapped, shrink-wrapped, and corner-protected at our distributor warehouse before it leaves the dock.
  • Tee package shipped inside the same crate as the tank - no separate package, nothing to lose in transit.
  • Fully insured for transit damage - if anything is damaged on arrival, we replace it at no cost. You don't fight the freight company.
  • Tracking info emailed the moment the BOL is generated. The freight carrier calls 24 hours ahead to schedule delivery.

Why This Matters

A pressure tank is a pressurized vessel that has to ship 1,000+ miles without getting dented or having the bladder unseated. Amazon and most online retailers ship these tanks via standard parcel (UPS/FedEx) where they get tossed onto conveyors and dropped repeatedly. The result: dented shells, cracked pressure relief valves, and "non-returnable" labels because of pressurization regulations. A 53 lb WX-250 in a UPS box is asking for trouble. Palletized freight is the correct way to ship this tank.

What to do on delivery: Open the box on the driver's pallet jack and inspect for dents, dings, and crushed corners. Why the Well-X-Trol WX-250 Is the Right Pressure Tank for High-Flow Pumps and Heavy Demand

Authentic Amtrol Pro Series + Brass Tee Package + 17 Gal Drawdown + 7-Year Warranty Backed By Us

The Well-X-Trol WX-250 is the genuine 44 gallon Amtrol Pro series pressure tank - the high-drawdown workhorse of the residential Pro line. At 36 in. tall x 22 in. diameter it gives you about 17 gallons of usable drawdown at 30/50 PSI service, roughly 44% more than the 32 gallon WX-203 and 30% more than the stubby WX-205 - for the exact same $1,695 as the WX-205. Sourced through an Amtrol authorized distributor channel, shipped palletized on freight, and packaged with a complete brass tee assembly so it arrives ready to plumb in. Most online tank purchases come with a hidden problem: per Amtrol's official Internet Sales Policy, Well-X-Trol products bought from e-commerce sources are ineligible for manufacturer warranty support. We solve that by backing every sale through our authorized distributor channel - you call Mid Atlantic Water, we help you get a replacement, we coordinate the freight. The WX-250 is the right pick for: high-flow submersibles (15-20 GPM), constant-pressure / VFD pumps that benefit from longer tank run-time, households with multiple bathrooms running simultaneously, irrigation systems, large families, or anyone who wants to dramatically cut pump cycling to extend pump life. For standard single-family residential use on a 1/2 to 1 HP submersible, the 32 gallon WX-203 ($1,295) is still the right size and saves you $400.

Frequently Asked Questions

The WX-250 is 44 gallons with ~17 gal of drawdown at 30/50 PSI. The WX-203 is 32 gallons with ~12 gal of drawdown. So the WX-250 gives you about 44% more drawdown, which translates to longer pump run-times and fewer on/off cycles. It's also 22 in. diameter vs the WX-203's 15 in. diameter, so it takes a wider footprint but is shorter (36 in. vs 47 in. tall). At $1,695 vs $1,295, the WX-250 is the right call when you have a high-flow pump (15+ GPM), a constant-pressure / VFD pump that benefits from longer tank time, multiple bathrooms running simultaneously, irrigation, or a large family. For most typical single-family residential use with a 1/2 to 1 HP pump, the WX-203 is still the right-sized tank and saves you $400.

Same 22 in. diameter. Same $1,695 price. The WX-250 is just 6 in. taller (36 in. vs 30 in.) and gives you about 30% more drawdown (~17 gal vs ~13 gal at 30/50 PSI). If you have the 42 in. of vertical clearance to fit the WX-250, it's strictly the better buy - more drawdown for the exact same money. The WX-205 only makes sense when you physically cannot fit anything taller than 30 in.

Tank size isn't really about home size, it's about matching your pump flow rate and keeping pump cycling within spec. The rule of thumb most installers use is one gallon of drawdown per 1 GPM of pump flow (so a 15 GPM pump wants ~15 gal of drawdown minimum). The WX-250's ~17 gal of drawdown comfortably handles pumps up to 20 GPM, constant-pressure pumps (which benefit from longer tank buffers), and households that run multiple fixtures simultaneously. If you have a 1/2 to 1 HP submersible (5-12 GPM range) and typical single-family use, the WX-203's 12 gal of drawdown is plenty and saves you $400.

Constant-pressure / variable-speed pumps can technically run with any tank size, but manufacturers generally recommend a larger tank so the pump doesn't cycle every time a toilet refills or a sprinkler zone opens. The WX-250 is usually the right call for VFD systems - the extra drawdown buffer smooths out demand, reduces starts, and lets the pump stay in its efficient midrange speed. Call us at 800-460-5810 with your pump brand/model and we'll confirm.

Significantly. Pumps have a limited number of starts before the motor bearings, starting capacitor, or relay burn out - manufacturers quote anywhere from 300,000 to 1 million starts over lifetime, but real-world life is heavily reduced when starts happen more often than necessary. A properly sized tank like the WX-250 (more drawdown = fewer starts per day) typically extends pump life by years and cuts electricity usage by 15-25% vs an undersized tank.

This is the real thing. The WX-250 is the genuine 44 gallon Pro series tank manufactured by Amtrol Inc. in West Warwick, Rhode Island. We source every unit through an Amtrol authorized wholesale distributor channel - the same supply chain that serves licensed pump installers across the East Coast. Same factory, same SKU, same serial number range. The tank ships with the official Amtrol silkscreened branding and 7-year warranty paperwork.

Amtrol's official Internet Sales Policy actually excludes online purchases from manufacturer support. That sounds bad, and it is for most online sellers, but it is not an issue when you buy from us. If you have a warranty issue, call Mid Atlantic Water at 800-460-5810 or email support@midatlanticwater.net with a photo of the serial sticker. We help you get a replacement through our authorized distributor channel and coordinate the replacement tank shipment. Most replacements ship in 5 to 10 business days. You're not stuck calling a manufacturer support line by yourself.

Pre-charge equals your pump cut-in pressure minus 2 PSI - measured with NO water in the tank. Factory ships at 38 PSI which is correct for a 40/60 cut-in/cut-out switch. For 30/50 service (most common residential), drop it to 28 PSI. For 50/70 service, raise it to 48 PSI. Use a tire gauge on the air valve under the blue cap on top. Wrong pre-charge is the #1 cause of premature bladder failure - more than any manufacturing defect.

A correctly sized and properly pre-charged Well-X-Trol Pro typically runs 10-15+ years. The 7-year warranty covers manufacturing defects, but realistic lifespan with annual pre-charge checks is much longer. The most common failure is the diaphragm, usually caused by repeated waterlogging from a wrong pre-charge. The pressure switch (a separate part) typically needs replacement every 5-8 years - that's normal for any switch.

Yes. The WX-250 has a standard 1 in. NPTF system connection that works with any submersible or jet pump on the market. The included pressure switch is a Square D / Pumptrol style 30/50 PSI factory set, field-adjustable to 20/40, 40/60, or 50/70. If you have an existing pressure switch you want to keep, just swap it onto the new tee. Wiring is the same.

Well-X-Trol® WX-250 Pressure Tank Package - 44 Gal Authentic Amtrol Pro Series
Well-X-Trol® WX-250 Pr... $2,195.00

What You Actually Get for $1,695

Authentic Amtrol High-Drawdown Tank + Brass Tee + Warranty Service vs Amazon Tank-Only

What You Actually Get for $600 on Amazon

Online listings for the WX-250 start around $600 - but that price is for the bare tank only, with no pressure switch, no gauge, no relief valve, no boiler drain, and no brass tee to plumb it in. By the time you source those parts from a hardware store you are at $800-$950 for the tank alone, before shipping or warranty considerations.

Worse: per Amtrol's own Internet Sales Policy, most online-only sellers don't have a working warranty path for Well-X-Trol tanks. Most cheap online tanks also ship UPS/FedEx parcel where bladder unseating from drops is the #1 cause of dead-on-arrival units. A 53 lb pressurized vessel thrown in a UPS box is asking for dent damage. And almost all are marked non-returnable because pressurized vessels fall under hazardous freight rules.

$0.66/day - tank, tee, freight, warranty

A 7-year tank service life works out to about $0.66/day for the complete package. The cheap online tank-only listing - even if you never have a problem - costs more once you add the missing parts and factor in the higher failure rate from poor packaging. And if you do have a problem, the cheap option has no real warranty path. We have customers who learned that lesson the hard way and replaced their Amazon tank with ours after the bladder failed in year three.

Within the Pro Series line, the WX-250 is the best drawdown-per-dollar option - same diameter and same price as the shorter WX-205, just 6 in. taller for ~30% more drawdown. If you have the vertical clearance, there's no reason to pick the WX-205 over the WX-250.

What You Get From Mid Atlantic Water

455+ Verified Reviews
29+ Success Rate

We have spent 29+ years selling and servicing well water equipment, and the #1 complaint about online tank purchases is what happens when something goes wrong. Either the tank arrives dented from being tossed around in parcel shipping, or it fails in year 3 and the buyer discovers the warranty was effectively unhelpful because the seller can't coordinate a replacement and the buyer is stuck calling Amtrol's manufacturer support line on their own.

We chose to sell the genuine Well-X-Trol Pro series, source it through an Amtrol authorized distributor channel, ship it palletized on freight, and stand behind every sale ourselves. That's what makes the price different, and that's what makes the guarantee real.

The Online Tank Buyer's Trap +

Most online tank sellers - including Amazon - mark pressure tanks 'non-returnable' citing hazardous freight regulations. So if your tank arrives dented, leaking, or with a damaged bladder, you are stuck with it. The Amtrol warranty technically covers manufacturing defects but not shipping damage, and per their Internet Sales Policy, most online sellers can't help you get a replacement anyway. You are on your own.

And the warranty? Amtrol's policy explicitly states that Well-X-Trol items 'purchased from an e-commerce source are ineligible for manufacturer support including warranty coverage.' Read your seller's fine print before assuming the 7 year warranty applies to your purchase.

How Our Real Guarantee Works
1
Damaged In Transit or Defective

If the tank arrives damaged or fails inside the 7 year warranty window, you call us. Same day for transit damage, anytime for warranty issues.

2
We Help You Get a Replacement

Call or email us and we'll help route your issue. We coordinate a replacement through our authorized distributor channel and follow up until it's resolved. Most replacements ship in 5 to 10 business days.

Refund If We Can't Make It Right

If we cannot resolve the issue in good faith, you get a full refund and we coordinate the freight pickup from your home. No restocking fees. No 'non-returnable' fine print. You should not have to gamble on whether a $1,700 well tank actually works.

I have personally sized and shipped thousands of Well-X-Trol tanks over the past 29 years. The WX-250 is the tank I recommend most often for households with high-flow pumps, multi-bathroom simultaneous use, constant-pressure systems, or anyone who wants to dramatically cut pump cycling. Same diameter and price as the WX-205, just 6 in. taller - if you have the clearance, it's the smarter buy. Call us at 800-460-5810 with your pump model and we'll confirm it's the right size before you click order.

Solved my very high iron issues

"I had well water with over 20 ppm ferrous and 7 ppm of ferric iron, plus manganese and some sulfur. Local water companies rejected me, said they couldn't help. I purchased two Fleck 2.5 cu. ft. 2510AIO iron filter tanks with Katalox-Light. Problem solved."

Corrosive water resolved

"New house, brass fittings on my Pex were all corroding. Tested the water, acidic at 5.5. Found Mid Atlantic Water YouTube videos which were very helpful, ordered the non-back washing 2.5. Easy install, water tests great now."

Amazing set up

"Straight forward installation. In, out, and the drain. Ran a back wash cycle then put it online and it works GREAT. Cleaned out the iron and raised the pH to 7.5. Culligan tried to sell me something twice the price."

Outstanding help and products

"Three contractors and two other suppliers reviewed my well report. Quotes ranged from $5,000 to $10,000. Then I found Mid Atlantic. Aidan reviewed the report and recommended a complete system. Same equipment, fraction of the cost, and the support was real."

Does exactly what it's supposed to do

"Easy, bullet-proof installation. No moving parts. Raised my pH from 6.8 to a perfect 7.6. I had previously installed the same unit in my daughter's water system. Her pH was 5.2. Following Aidan's videos, both installs went smoothly."

My water is fixed

"Super easy install. Shouldn't have to service it for approximately 24-36 months based on my water usage. Tank is solid, fittings are clean, no leaks. Exactly what was advertised."
