How to Easily Install a Water Softener in Your Home

Are you tired of hard water issues such as scale build-up, reduced soap lather, and damages to your water-using appliances? Installing a water softener can resolve these problems by removing minerals that cause water hardness. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to install a water softener in your home:

Preparation:

Before you begin, gather the necessary tools and materials which can be found at any local hardware store. You will need:

  • Pipe cutters (for copper or plastic)
  • Pipe fittings
  • Pipe glue
  • Teflon tape
  • Backwash line
  • PVC tee
  • P-trap
  • Stand pipe
  • Bucket to catch any residual water

Step 1: Shut Off Water Supply

Shut off your household water supply. If you don't have a shut-off valve after your blue pressure tank, you may need to turn off the breaker to the well pump and drain it. Open a nearby faucet to release pressure and drain water from the plumbing. Keep a 4-gallon bucket handy to catch any residual water when you cut into the pipes.

Step 2: Plan the Installation

Before cutting into your plumbing, plan the installation. Identify the inlet and outlet, and start at the pressure tank, usually blue. If the pipe coming off the pressure tank is copper, we recommend using CPVC. Follow the detailed instructions in the guide to complete the plumbing to the inlet side of an acid neutralizer if you have one.

Step 3: Fill the Unit

Fill the unit with softener resin, ensuring to cover the distributor tube with tape to prevent media from entering the tube. Once filled, mount the control head, and screw in the fill cap. Open the water supply valve partially to let the filter tank or water softener fill slowly, purging the air out of the system. Once filled, open the supply valve fully, let water run until clear, and check for any leaks or drips over the next few days. You will then need to run a drain line to a sanitary tub, sump pump, existing washer standpipe, or tee into a PVC drain pipe.
