There is nothing to plug in, no drain line, no backwash and no programming. Price: $2,695, shipped free to the lower 48 states.

Who it is for

Homes on city water, or on well water with no iron, manganese or sulfur, with hardness up to about 25 grains, that cannot fit a softener's drain and electrical outlet, do not want to carry salt, or need to avoid added sodium or potassium. For most other hard water homes, Aidan recommends a salt softener such as the Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 grain water softener ($1,995).

Which size

The Medium is a 12x52 tank with 10 liters of Filtersorb SP3. It fits a two or three bathroom house with three to five people. It is the shortest tank of the three, at about 56 inches with the head.

The other sizes: Small: 1.5 cu ft, 9 L SP3 (2 to 4 people, $2,495), Large: 2.5 cu ft, 14 L SP3 (4 to 7 people, $2,895).

Flow

Watch Water, which makes Filtersorb SP3 in Germany, sizes its media by flow: its table works out to about 1.5 GPM per liter, so the 10 liters here are good for about 15 GPM. A modern shower head is rated 2.5 GPM or less, and two showers plus a faucet is about 6 GPM, so every size keeps up with the house. The bigger sizes hold more media for more people and more water through the years, which is why we size by household. The people and bathroom bands are ours, the same bands as our filter + salt-free systems.

What it does

Filtersorb SP3 does not remove hardness. As Aidan puts it, it converts the hardness "to a microscopic crystal, so it can't attach itself to the plumbing and the water-using appliances." Watch Water calls the process nucleation assisted crystallization (NAC). Water flows up through the media and on to the house; nothing is added to it.

What it does not do

The water still tests hard after the conditioner, because the calcium and magnesium are still in it. It will not feel slippery like softened water, it does not help dry skin or hair the way a softener does, and water that dries on glass or a shower door can still leave white spots. Soap and shampoo lather about the same as before. It does not remove chlorine, iron, sulfur, lead, PFAS or sediment, and it does not disinfect. SP3 is not for well water with iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) or oil: Watch Water's limits are iron 0.5 ppm, manganese 0.05 ppm and copper 1.3 ppm, and Aidan will not put a salt-free conditioner on water with any iron. It has no drain, so it does not backwash out sediment: if your toilet tanks collect grit, add a 20 inch Big Blue 5 micron sediment filter ahead of it.

On city water, the filter + salt-free conditioner in the same size ($4,395) adds a catalytic carbon tank that removes chlorine and chloramine first.

What ships

One empty Vortech 12x52 tank, a Clack C1190 head with bypass valve, a fill funnel and 10 liters of Filtersorb SP3, poured into the tank at install. Plumbing fittings are not included. No drain line or electrical outlet is needed. There are no instructions in the box; use our guides, or text Aidan.

Installation

We recommend having a plumber install it. There is no drain line and no electricity, just an inlet and an outlet, so it is about an hour or two of a plumber's time. Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. If you have done some plumbing and would rather do it yourself, text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with any questions.

Maintenance

Nothing between refills. Filtersorb SP3: Aidan plans on about every 3 years; Watch Water rates it 5 to 7 years. Aidan quotes about $1,200 to $1,500 for the 14 liters in the Large; for the 10 liters here, text him for today's price.

How it compares

Most salt-free conditioners sold online do not publish how much media they hold, or name it. This one prints both: 10 liters of Watch Water Filtersorb SP3, with a public data sheet. The bypass valve is included, the hardness limit is stated, and Aidan gives you the media replacement price before you buy.

Talk to Aidan before you order

Free sizing help before you buy: call 800-460-5810, 7 days a week, 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern, or text 443-277-2204. Send your water utility's report or a lab test and Aidan will tell you which size fits and whether a salt softener would serve you better.
