It is the last tank in a well system, after the sediment filter, iron filter and softener, and it takes out the taste, odor and chemicals they leave, with no drain, no electricity and no backwash. Sized for 7 or more people and 4 or more bathrooms.

Large Home Whole House Carbon Filter for Well Water, 3.5 cu ft (4+ Bathrooms): Clack C1190 Non-Backwashing | 3.5 cu ft Centaur Catalytic Carbon | 14x65 Vortech Tank

Water enters the bottom of the tank, rises through 3.5 cubic feet of Centaur 12x40 catalytic carbon, and leaves at the top for the rest of the house. There is nothing to plug in, no drain line, no backwash and no programming, and it needs no backwash flow from your well. Price: $2,395, shipped free to the lower 48 states.

Which size

For a big house on a well: seven or more people or four or more bathrooms. It does the same jobs as the 2.5 with 40% more carbon, so the carbon lasts longer in a busy house. The tank is 14 by 65 inches and stands about 69 inches tall, so check the ceiling height first. For high radon in a large family, Aidan sometimes puts two carbon tanks in a row; text him the number.

The line: 1.0 cu ft (1 to 2 people, $1,295), 1.5 cu ft (2 to 4 people, $1,495), 2.0 cu ft (3 to 5 people, $1,795), 2.5 cu ft (4 to 7 people, $1,995).

When a well needs a carbon tank

Usually not as the first tank: the common well problems are iron, hardness, low pH, sediment and bacteria, and carbon fixes none of them. A carbon tank earns its place for a light rotten egg smell, radon, a chemical a lab test found, or a taste that stays after the other equipment is in.

What it removes

It reduces many VOCs (volatile organic chemicals such as solvents and fuel compounds) and some pesticides; the taste and odor left after an iron filter, acid neutralizer or softener; and, in the 2.5 and 3.5 sizes, a light rotten egg smell (under about 1 ppm of hydrogen sulfide) and radon. Activated carbon also reduces some PFAS. This tank is not certified for PFAS removal and we do not publish a removal percentage.

What it does not remove

Carbon does not remove iron, manganese or hardness, does not raise a low pH, and does not remove bacteria, nitrate, fluoride or sediment; on a well those come first, each with its own filter. A strong rotten egg smell (above about 1 ppm) needs a sulfur filter: a carbon tank on strong sulfur helps for a few months, then runs out, and a used-up bed can put the smell back worse. A carbon bed can also grow bacteria, which is why a UV light goes after it, never before. It does not backwash, so on a well it needs a 5 micron sediment filter ahead of it.

Where it goes

Last in line. From where the water comes in: The pressure tank. A 5 micron sediment filter. An iron filter or an acid neutralizer, if your test calls for them. A water softener, if the water is hard. This carbon tank. A UV light, if your test shows bacteria. It goes after the carbon tank because it needs clear water, and because bacteria can grow in a carbon bed; the UV light treats them on the way out.

What ships

The empty Vortech 14x65 tank, the Clack head with bypass valve, a fill funnel, and 3.5 cubic feet of Centaur in three 1 cubic foot bags and one 1/2 cubic foot bag, poured into the tank at install. Plumbing fittings are not included, apart from the 1 inch PVC connectors for the bypass. No drain line or outlet is needed. There are no instructions in the box; use our install guides and videos, or text Aidan.

Installation

We recommend having a plumber install it. On its own it is just an inlet and an outlet, with no drain line and no electricity, about an hour or two of a plumber's time. On a well it usually goes in with other tanks; that is a bigger job, with each tank in order and a drain line for each one that backwashes, so ask for a plumber who has installed water treatment before. Aidan supports your plumber by phone at 800-460-5810. If you have done some plumbing and would rather do it yourself, text Aidan at 443-277-2204 with any questions.

Maintenance

Nothing between refills. About 5 years in a typical home, 4 to 5 years on a light sulfur smell (Aidan). A refill is 3.5 cubic feet of Centaur: 3 x 1 cu ft bag and 1 x 1/2 cu ft bag. The 1 cubic foot bag is $295 today, so 3 x $295 = $885 plus the 1/2 bag, which Aidan prices by text.

Talk to Aidan before you order

Free sizing help before you buy: call 800-460-5810, 7 days a week, 8 AM to 5 PM Eastern, or text 443-277-2204.
